This doesn't surprise me in the least. We learned a lot of our songs during events with other chapters. What I can guarantee you is that that song was NOT "taught" by anyone at the national chapter. They don't put up with that shit for a second. They may coordinate the event, but they can't police every interaction between members.

I don't deny that it's a problem that goes much farther than the OU chapter. I would also bet my bottom dollar that it's not just SAE (or even the Greek system as a whole) that suffers this scourge. We are all a collective reflection of our regional environments, and therefore certain regions of our country (*cough* the South *cough*) are disproportionately slow to help grow this country into a post-racial future IMHO.

By the time I got to college at 21 I had been on my own since I was 17 and I was too much of an adult to even consider a frat. For the most part I didn't bother with them and they didn't bother with me. The hazing, the pledging, etc. never made sense to me. I was too busy working and studying my ass off. I had a few friends/acquaintances who were in frats and they seemed level headed enough except when hazing or pledging. I can't imagine letting someone haze me or me hazing anyone.

I went to a frat party or two but I was just too 'old in the head' to want to make it more often. At my last frat party a drunk off his ass guy was cutting up some limes with a butcher knife and another drunk off his ass guy kept putting out is middle finger, palm down, on the table daring the lime cutter to cut off his finger. I watched this go on until out of nowhere the guy cutting the limes finally decided to take the other guys offer and whacked him hard enough to sever the finger just below the top knuckle. The guy who was wielding the knife grabbed a dirty towel and wrapped it around the guys bleeding finger and put the finger top in a used drink glass that had ice in it. The guy with the cut finger just kept saying over and over 'I can't believe you did that'! I headed for the door and I could hear the sirens getting louder when I was halfway down the street. I never saw the guy with the cut finger again and heard that the guy who cut his finger became a primary care doctor. Guess becoming a surgeon didn't suit him after all :D

As long as we don't forget that, while the south may seem a more "natural" place for discrimination, it is in no way just the south. There is plenty of discrimination and bigotry to go around and there is NO PLACE where it can't be found. That should be a goal, but we are a long way from it.

Look at the efforts to suppress the vote happening in Wisc and Penn and Ohio and Indiana, to name just a few. We need to look at this as a nation, AND WE NEED TO FIX THE VOTING RIGHTS ACT!!!

This is true. I was singled out in HS for my special treatment because I was white. I also experienced racism against whites in the Philippines, so I agree the problem is world wide and there is no single group that does not suffer from it. Marrying into an Asian family I have experienced racism from my own family as well but there is definitely a component on the Asian side that is just as bad if not worse. Depends on where you are though.

The real point is if someone is coming at you, for whatever reason, defend yourself first, ask questions later.

While that may be useful advice for some, it won't help many. Not everyone can or will, depending on the circumstances and the aggressor. The only way to really stop bullying is to stop the bullies, and much of the time if not most, that is unlikely to come from the one being bullied. That has to come from authority, and it has to be policy. Sometimes bad ideas can be worse than no ideas.

It's a lot easier to do, and you don't have to be in someones face, or directly see the damage you have done. Depending on how evil the perp is, that can be a pos or a neg. I think some who cyberbully don't know the extent of the damage they do. Especially when they are being egged on by the real perp who requires their fealty.

In many ways, I think cyber bullying can be much more devastating than in-person physical bullying.
All forms of bulling are despicable, cyber bullying is a new form and you are right, it appears to be devastating. All the poems written about my sexual orientation, I remember one called "Ode to a Fag" even though I'm straight, were posted on the walls of the school.

And as far as defending yourself it is a must. I was attacked by a kid from Khobar Saudi Arabia once with no warning. He threw my little Jewish friend out of the room and when I turned around he smashed my head back into the door and towel bar. He was mad because of something I did in retaliation for him letting people come into our room and steal/destroy my property while I was gone. One time they left a Playgirl magazine on my bed. I simply put "Property of Ray *****" on it and threw it out the window and some students found it and gave him a hard time. This, in his view, was an insult and a fighting offense.

The event ended when I choked him into unconsciousness. I remember being terrified that I had killed him accidentally while defending myself as he lay there. It was a sad and unfortunate thing. I, of course, ran to get him immediate medical attention and by the time I got back with a dorm parent he was waking up. His eyes were all yellow and red, I had exploded a lot of blood vessles with the pressure I had applied on his neck in my defense.

And with the wrong dorm parent you might have ended up suspended, expelled or worse, even though you were defending yourself, and especially if you couldn't prove it.

I'm not saying you shouldn't have done it. I'm saying the results are unpredictable, and if he were bigger enough than you it might have been you choked to death.

They (the dorm parents) did nothing of course. I demanded a roommate change and it was granted. Had I not defended myself I would have been worse off I think.

I'm reminded of a story I was told by a friend in his 50s. When he was in junior high school he was picked on by a class bully who had about 20 lbs on him. He got little support at school and he told his Dad about it. His Dad decided that he needed to fight back, and taught him a little boxing "by the rules".

One day the bully went after him and Mike took his stance and landed a good hard right on the kids jaw, that stunned him pretty good. But a small crowd had gathered and the bully knew that he couldn't let that stand or his rep was over, so he kicked Mike in the nuts, and while he had him down proceeded to kick the shit out of him, opening up a couple cuts on his face including a small scar he still has. Bullies don't fight by the rules, and if you get in a fight with one, you better be able to beat him.

Obviously Mike still has the emotional scars too or I probably wouldn't have heard the story.

Sometimes fighting back is the right thing to do. Sometimes not so much.

So, FUCK BULLIES NO MATTER WHAT. And PLEASE stop electing them.

Thats why I have never fought "by the rules". You can't. I only fight when cornered, period. When forced to fight I will eye gouge, choke, throat punch, or do whatever I must to defend myself.

Learning to sport fight with rules and thinking it is proper self defense is a HUGE mistake a lot of people make. In an encounter such as these you usually have about 5 seconds to save your life. Understanding that fighting is not a game is critical to survival. Criminals do not follow rules either.

I would guess that many cyber-bullies were victims of real-life bullying at some point.

That sounds like it was at least partly his dad's fault, for not teaching him about how boxing rules only apply in boxing rings. That kick in the nuts was the unfortunate real-world component of his fighting education.

Oh yeah... fuck the need for a real-world fighting education!

Totally agree with this. Im a peaceful guy but if attacked will not hesitate to use any dirty tactic available. Fuck trying to be fair or sporting when under physical attack.

Yup. You're probably right.

And bullying by parents is child abuse, and that does not have to be physical abuse at all. I wonder how many parents don't even acknowledge or even recognize that there's such a thing as psychological abuse that can occur from a parent to a child.

Yup. Not only parenting classes, but psychological testing to see if one is capable of being a parent.

And yeah, I know. This may solve one problem, but in so doing, may create a possible worse one but I can't begin to tell ya how many times that I've seen and KNOWN parents who never should have have been parents in the first place and it's their children who pay the price and then they become the parents that their parents were, and their children suffer and the circle just continues on.......and on.......and.....

Bullying and abuse can, no doubt, be traced back centuries within a bloodline......

The question then becomes, who's got the balls along with the insight and tenacious fortitude to stop it dead in it's tracks.

It brings up the question of requiring a license to have children. Why not a few parenting classes to help you through the process? However, legislating procreation is a . . . :worms: and I am NOT advocating it, just proposing the idea for discussion.
