Discontinued Zion vaporizer

So with this design it is hard to have a broader range like a log, right? Don't care so much about concentrates myself, I think the flower is unsurpassable, but it would be nice to have the power in hand if I want to spend a load in a couple of hits.

Dark spots should be eliminated ideally so no stirring is required but I am not so sure this is even visible in a pure convection design... I would love Crafty-like ABV utter evenness but whatever works.
To be perfectly honest I have only made gross adjustments to the heater working to get in the ballpark temperature range working to improve efficiencies in order to roast a load on the top end. The Zion can span the temperature range the problem is turn down... Meaning if you span 500 degrees compared to say 250 degrees you loose 50% of your dial resolution. After I make the last few Beta units I will start to instrument a unit with thermal couples and begin to experiment scientifically. I have procured a range of potentiometers and fixed resistors to test. I will report out to the forum what options are available and we can hone in what we set the first 100 at.

It's really a tricky animal because of it's rapid heat up and cool down it is hard to find thermal couples who's lag time is short enough to keep up with the Zion this why I have been using the ABV condition as an indicator... Nice golden brown without stirring should be what @stickstones should experience :)

Keep on mind this is technology in the rough at this point we have only tested one prototype, three 2x4s and just staring to test the Zion Beta units. Still a ton of opportunity for refinement

This rapid temp change in both directions has a lot of upside, with the ramp up being one of the most interesting draws (heh) for me. I get that the ramp down quickly drops temp below liberation point, does it actually get cool? In an earlier post you suggested that you might tamp down the load after a "stir" with your thumb. In a lot of vapes that might lead to a burn. Does the airflow cool the heater that much or would the heater actually be below the bowl completely and the bowl actually cool?

Yes, the heater has the ability to shed the heat almost instantly as well... You can run the heater red hot, turn if off, blow on it like a birthday candle and immediately grab it with your fingers and it isn't even hot. newton's law of cooling in action. It's all about surface area ;)

holy shit. for a non-engineering guy like me, that is like alchemy.

or should i say "i don't believe you!" hah, prove it!

the tick tock shall soon stop
like the thudding of a knock
thru Zion shall we be clocked?

Has the possibility of an attached herb storage chamber, additional screen storage, and poker tool all attached to the double battery version of the Zion been mentioned? If the bullet like bowl idea pans out, a spot for one or two backup bullets ready to go sounds pretty intriguing.

The old California made Protopipe comes to mind. Anyone remember those? Like the swiss army knife of travel bowls. I used to have a couple of them.

We have... As @thekarmawhore pointed out, we have squeezed every inch out of this thing... We would have to grow the unit to make space and things fit together pretty well now. Maybe a capped tube for pre-packed loads as an accessory? We are toying with the idea of a stash pocket in the cap of the "electric dugout" of coarse ;)

Yup. That was the last combustion piece I used before I got my first vape. Damn thing burned hot. Combusted out of a brass (lead infused) pipe. I sure did some stupid-ass shit.

At one point i probably used almost nothing but a Proto and joints for around a year or longer. All day, every day. Asside from brass being the choice of material, it was the greatest design for a metal pipe i have ever seen. Built in screen that was easily cleanable, built in herb storage, built in poker tool, and the removable resin chamber were too cool for school.

@Iwien i knew some old school head like yourself would remember the little fucker. I think the Proto was designed in the 70s and was often imitatated but never duplicated

I believe @thekarmawhore is a proto guy?

I can't find the lid atm, but I still have one of these laying around.

I still have my protopipe somewhere... I pulled it out a couple of months ago for someone to use at my house, (Don't judge I gave my last glass spoon and a bag of hi-cbd meds away to my grandmother in law) and it still had half a bowl in it from like 4 years ago :puke:

I had the same thoughts as lwien "jeez I used to smoke nasty thing?" but I am there with @IAmKrazy2 that thing was freaking awesome and unrivaled for on the go combustion.

Things look like there shaping up quickly in here, interested to hear what FC beta testers have to say. Shit is gittin' real!

The Proto was de rigueur amongst the High Times set in the mid-late 70s. Like @lwien said, we did a lot of stupid shit.

Considering all the crap that I put into my body (I was a drug garbage disposal), it's fucking amazing that I'm still alive let alone running 20 miles a week at 71 years old. The body is an amazing piece of machinery that has an uncanny ability to heal itself. Mine has been serving me well despite the abuse and for that, I give it a hug every morning. It's the least I can do to show my appreciation.

Ahhhhh...after 71 years together, you two still get romantic. lol

Sorry for what ultimately was a thread derail.

Back on topic. Maybe we can intrigrate my desire for the perfect storage spot for loaded bullets and a small tool into the case. Something small that would also fit in the pocket, and maybe provide some smell protection for the device itself and any additional medicine bullets stored.

Ps. I found my old Proto too. Proto Baggins as I called him. It was cleaned out to almost new condition before being stored away in a little box years ago. Is smoking out of brass a good idea? Hell no. But i can't say i would never use the Proto again with 100% certainty. I mean, why else would i have kept it all these years if there wasn't a chance.

Nearly all the non glass pipes I used at the time were made of lamp parts, and the metal was completely unknown to me. I'm quite sure it was all poison, but I'm still here.

These days I care about this stuff and I'm glad for reliable vendors who "get it". When I was young and stupid I never even considered the dangers. Or rarely, anyway...

You guys sure did shave that size as much as possible. Is there room at the bottom of the unit, below the stems or batteries for a small storage compartment for these theoretical capsules?

It doesn't look like it but just curious

@thekarmawhore I think it's time to do another 3D PDF? Let's spin one out after our design review today? That way he guys can see for themselves :)

While I appreciate the sentiment imo there is no need diverting resources from the task at hand if it's not needed. I have faith in you and TKW's design prowess from what I have seen thus far. No use creating work where there is none ;)

I have had to excessively defend my designs from engineers (out of my field), contractors, it guys, etc not trying to be that guy.

No trouble, really it's just a good way for people to get to know the Zion :)

The 2x4 continued to win people over after the glass show last night

Hmmm, been checking out this thread and it looks like I might just have to get in on it too. Like I really need another vape...

Just a couple questions: how smelly is this thing? And do you expect the stealth version to have similar heater technology and power even if the single battery wouldn't last as long as the two batteries in the Zion?

Also, RBT, your videos of the this thing in action all say "removed by user." Even on YouTube.
