I go where the thrills are
You will break it up eventually, right there in the stem, with the included, "e-pik".

But starting with a whole small bud (piece of bud really) will give you amazing flavor on the first hit. Then you can flip the bud (with the pick) and get a second big flavor hit.

Once you do that the bud is dry enough that some light poking and it breaks right apart. Continue hitting and stir as you go.

Exactly how I do it. Small whole bits in the glass stem...every third hit, stir and break with the pick...while slowly raising temps and eventually moving the screen closer. Start with whole small buds...end with a fine, dark-brown, completely spent powder, some dozen hits and iterative stirring later.

Grind vs. whole? False dichotomy. Some of us do both, at once!

So I bought SSVUNs nano (or one of many of his :p) and quickly broke the gong so I was using the dry tube with silicone over it in my 18mm pieces. Then in a delirium from a flu bug and lack of sleep I tipped it off the table and broke the dry stem too! So now I slide the broken half down the stem completely till the bottom, and have my screen just an inch or so from the end of the draw end.

However I just can't get proper placement of the screen reliably. It keeps shifting. Is that forum member with the 3d printed screen press selling them yet? Is it worth buying a new dry tube? Anyone have Joda dry stems they'd bless the board with images of?

I guess that will get you through, but you might want to just pick up a GonG and stem from Epicvape. Or, a few of each if that's how things usually go with glass for you. Might be a good idea to pick up a 5 pack of screens while you're there and already paying shipping.

In the meantime, get a thick pen, 1/4" dowel or something else and stretch the screen you have. In order for it to work well, you want to spread the sides of the basket all the way down, not just at the open end. I use a piece of dowel. Jam it into the screen as far as you can, put it on a piece of wood (or something you don't mind marring) and give the other end of the dowel a few quick taps with a hammer (or butter knife handle). You want to spread the whole length of the sides, not just the open end. Try to keep from deforming it and reshape or taper on the open end as needed to get it back in the glass. This has been working great for me to tighten loose screens for quite some time. Think I have about 7 or 8 in the rotation right now, but have only had 2 or 3 totally wear out over the course of almost two years.

Great stuff @Reflections ! Ordered my set (stem and GonG) as soon as I saw your stem (the early green one).
BTW.... My official 2 year anniversary with nano was last week! 2 whole years!! Still loving it and not looking to replace it any time in the near future!

Do you find that the flavor usually drops off some after the first couple hits? This is one of the main reasons I go for the smaller loads - and grind. For me, after the first couple hits the flavor starts to get lost. It's still there... just not nearly as prominent. When I've tried small nugs, some of that flavor comes back when I first break them up - but not as much as first 2 hits and dies down again after that first stir that breaks things up. Can still pull vapor from here, but not nearly as satisfying as the first couple hits.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Or, maybe I'm just more concerned about the sweet flavor than others?

And, part of the problem for me becomes how much of a nug to put in for just a few hits? As I'm sure most have found it can be kind of hard to adjust and be consistent when throwing nugs in. 2 of the same size can easily produce different amounts in the "chamber" by the the time it has been vaped and busted up. And, once I get to that 4th, 5th hit and beyond I again feel like I'm missing out.

FWIW, I think the effects kind of follow the same path. I know, same amount of actives vaped in 3 small loads or one big one of same size should produce same results! But, doesn't seem so to me after extensive experimentation. Could be psychosomatic, or may be scientifically accurate. Don't know, don't really care and not planning to ponder it too much. :D But my method continues to work very well for me, and like it much better than anything else I've tried.

This does seem to be somewhat nano-centric = for me at least. With the solo or EQ the flavor still drops off after first couple of hits (tho stirring can bring some back), but effects don't seem to improve from several smaller loads instead of one bigger one.

EDIT: Probably should have mentioned somewhere along the line that this is with a 2 piece grinder that I keep pretty clean. If using a 4 piece and collecting kief, it is bound to take at least a little from your vaping experience. You can't skim off some of the good stuff with your grinder and expect the same effects as from a whole nug - or a 2 piece IMO.

Trapped in the Astral Planes Back from the dead
My e-nano shall be here by the end of the day tomorrow. Perfect timing as I'll have all weekend to trial & error this bad boy. Let the life after combustion begin cannot wait
Nice, I think you will like it. Congrats,
My Nano has returned home today. Andy opted to replace my old nano with a brand new one. The new one functions great, I really like the detachable cord. Thanks @ACE OF VAPE & @ nadia_epic . Back to my Water pipe for another rip!:science::tup:

I don't think you're doing anything wrong, at least not based on your flavor perceptions. To me, flavor quality is basically a one-way rachett...it goes downhill from hit one, in any convection vape. (I know taste experiences are highly variable so maybe not everyone experiences this.) The first hit is always the most floral, the most natural, and the speed of degradation and final flavors vary from vape to vape and session to session...but the direction from hit one is always the same.

I think the Nano has about the best flavor of any desktop I've used, perhaps due to the lack of tubing, and the Nano's short-ish vapor path. (It's the only log i've used, so perhaps they are all similar.) It doesn't equal the great flavor of the FF, but it comes pretty close, which is saying something. And like you, yeah, I'm pretty damned concerned with flavor.

Sounds good, but one quick observation..... Sometimes I find hit 2 to be a little more flavorful than hit 1 (with grinding at least). Doesn't really seem to be strain or "grind batch" dependent. I've just chalked it up to better vaporization after a warm up. But, have never found hit 3 or more to be as good as first 2.

Again, this is my primary motivation for grinding and suggesting the same for others. If I can consistently get 2 very tasty hits, then one that is OK, I'm happy. I know how much ground material that is (with some adjustments for variables). If I could easily determine what size of a nug to drop in there to do exactly the same every time, I'd be more prone to switch. But for me, I don't want to give up the flavor (or possible effect benefits - real or just perceived) on hits 4 and up - whether ground or whole.

I do sometimes push the screen down a bit and load a little more. Not often, because it's not optimal use of my stash or my nano IMO. So, maybe my questions are as related to load size as to grind or not to grind... Why would anyone want to give up the flavor (and possibly more) by loading more than 2 or 3 hits at a time? I get that some may not want to load and dump as much, but I've got no issue with that. Am I missing something, or is that really all there is to it?

Haven't had the opportunity to try a FF. Has always seemed to me to be a supercharged, hi-tec MFLB - but honestly haven't researched it much. Flavor is better than nano? With concentration I can get the MFLB there for a couple hits on a fresh trench, but it can be difficult if not using PA and paying attention.

No, there is more to it, at least in my case. I often get better results (thicker vapor, bigger hits) from convection vapes by packing a denser load...what I may lose in the number of "first flavor hits" I might get per gram, I make up for in vapor quality, and in really rich flavor on those first few hits. This is true of the Nano, the FF, and other convection vapes I've used. I'm not sure why this happens...there may be some kind of thermal mass at work, but that's just a loose theory. :p Anyway there are reasons why some of us use more rather than less herb in a load, beyond just convenience. (Which isn't really a factor I consider at all...what's one more time dumping the stem?)

Other than both being on-demand vapes, they aren't remotely similar, in any way. Most importantly the LB is conduction and the FF is convection. But we're off topic, so come on over to the FF thread and join the fun, or just speed-read via the Best Of thread.

Finally got my parcel from epic vape. New epik new basket screens and 14mm gong. But no new socket to fix my vape which was the main reason I placed my order and also paid extra for.

Emailed andy on here waiting for a reply but will be another 2 weeks at least before I have a working nano.

I think I have now experienced the "legendary" frustrating customer service from epic vape.

I never had on problems with CS but I'm starting to see they leave a lot to be desired in top quality CS.
Maybe all the improvements he trying to make will be the difference. I hope so.
Thanks @*plainlazy* I hope Andy straitening u out.
@ACE OF VAPE I hope your knew system works better than the old one!!!!

My nano just arrived and there are some problems. The GonG piece has some sticky residue on it(like tape residue with fibers and what not stuck in it) and its proving difficult to remove. I took off the silicone piece and have been vigorously shaking it in a ISO and salt solution and alas, it's still there. My second issue may not really be anything at all but, there's a small crack/scratch on the nano. This is probably nothing, I'm more worried about the residue on the Gong piece as it is keeping me from using the vape!

P.S. Other than the crack/scratch the nano is beautiful, that is for sure!

Try a solvent stronger than ISO. Mineral spirits, nail polish remover, even WD-40 may work. Just make sure to wash is well after.

How long does it usually take for an email reply about an issue with a nano? I had my vape for about three months now it's not working. The light wouldn't come on with the original cable so I went out an got a generic PS3 one bc someone said that worked, tried it and it lights up bright but after a half hour it's still only warm. I email them on the 5th and still haven't heard back. It's my first and only vape and I'm sick of combustion. Literally.

Andy was on a couple pages back saying they have a new system If email went unanswered after a couple days resend and try Nadia.
Good luck

If you haven't heard back from either me or Nadia within 1 day (usually a couple of hours) (not Including weekends) then we didn't receive the email for some reason. If you are having a cord issue go to the website and get an RMA.

Hopefully the site is up, it's been up and down a lot the last couple of days.
I hope this helps!!!

I feel so dumb. I thought it was working when i plugged the PS3 cable in and didn't make sure that it got hot so I put it away until I could afford that remote dial thing bc the replacement cables are sold out. Shelled out 60 bucks (basically half my money for the week) and it doesn't even work. And I was so excited too.
