Discontinued The Okin by D.M. Pipes

The sound of vapor
My Okin will surely and nicely display the results of its use and it being carried around, I'm certainly counting on that as it seems to be designed to be a living object unlike for instance my air that I really like and carry every where with me but with extra caution, it's too tech'y/digital in a way.
And I like the fact that box won't look brand new; the Okin would look a bit like the vaporizer I'd have inherited from my grand father if he had been vaping (he used to smoke the pipe). It has that kinda timeless touch.

As for the coal issue, maybe go the bamboo heating source way or something close, heat source is something people know is needed to vaporize so it's reassuring in a way and bamboo sounds nice and natural.

"The Okin is able to achieve vaporization thanks to a unique source of heat based on bamboo, using a simple piece of this natural and sustainable material which has been dehydrated at a very high temperature."

Call it a lit piece of bamboo basically. :D

So here it is! This has got an Okin prototype inside of it, but it gives you the idea of what the production model box will look like. This box is made from padauk wood, but the production model box will be made from African Mahogany (which I think is an even nicer looking wood).

The corners are finger jointed for maximum strength. It's lined with cork on both ends to hold the stem lightly in place and dampen any rattling sounds.

The two kraft paper boxes are just folded and glued together. These boxes can be made from any thick paper, and cut to shape to give you whatever compartment sizes you want, with or without lids.

I think I'll provide an 8x10 piece of paper with different box sizes printed out on it. You can pick the configuration you like, cut the box out, fold it, and you're good to go. Having removable boxes is very handy because you can pick out a little herb box, then dump straight from the box into the Okin chamber.

The metal tip is held in place by the lid which slides over one of the bronze springs, depressing it slightly.

The box is shown here with extra fabric filter material, sewing thread, and beeswax. There is room under the stem for matches as well. And some extra room beside the metal tip for cotton (if you're using concentrates).

When the box is closed, everything is held securely, and the box can go right into your pocket. The configuration shown here holds 5 charcoals. I figured that most people will be returning home at the end of the day, where they can restock the box with charcoals.

This slipcase was finished with linseed oil and beeswax. I applied the finish unevenly to give it an aged appearance... in case anyone wonders why some parts are darker than others...

Anyhow, I'm super happy with how it turned out! It's lightweight, small, and durable.

I'm loving the hell out of this box! Especially the detail work, like the cover for the box of tobacco! @Dan Morrison you have seemingly thought of anything It looks like the kind of box a really expensive fountain pen would come in, perfect size to travel with and enjoy. Are those extra filters and string for replacing on the fly? would those be something that comes with the case?

One of my questions is simply how hot does the entire tip get after a session? Do you need to let it cool down after a charcoal is burned out, or would you be able to reload the tip and put in another charcoal fairly soon after it is done, if you were enjoying this with another person.

I think this box is the perfect companion to the vaporizer.

Thanks!

The metal tip does get hot, but the copper prongs help to dissipate the heat fairly quickly. Usually I can touch the metal tip only a few seconds after finishing a session, but I think that my fingertips are less sensitive to heat than usual. I know that my friend thought it was too hot to touch during a session. In any case, it will cool off in about 15-20 seconds.

The best thing is that no matter how hard you draw on it, the wooden stem never gets hot, and the mouthpiece is always cool. I think this really helps to keep the vapor smooth.

And yep! those are extra filters, string, and beeswax. Those will come with the case to get you started, then you can experiment with different cotton weaves as you please.
