Rosin Technique....Easy DIY Solventless

Has anyone else tried to Vape or comsume the pressed buds?
Yeah, depending on how much you squish the buds... much earlier I posted about the squished flakes being hard to grind and stiff. I went back and did a re-press and got more oil out of them. I find it's done when they turn kinda golden light light brown, they will snap in half easily. Even then they still produce some vapor  tastes like ABV but not as strongly. All I know is it works, makes solventless oil, and it's fun as fuck to watch it vape.

Sorry for the mild blurriness, you get the idea of the melt quality you can expect in the first 20ish seconds but near the end it's slowly vaporizing away (I cut power half-way for a bit). This reminds me of doing micro-runs for BHO. I was comfortable getting a gram out of a quarter of good bud (15% yields). I'm more comfortable squishing buds and getting BHO-quality oil. This is the kind of bubbling I'm used to seeing from super clean dry sift (like 99%+ heads).

Keep us posted if you get the press or anyone tries a different method.

My friend made some out of the strain lavender today. 10% return off 2 grams. It is the single most terpy extract I've ever had. If this wasn't heat pressed, I'd have assumed it had chemicals in it the flavor is so strong!

UNREAL.

EDIT:

Picture time. This came from 2g of bud lol... He got a lot of plant matter in it for this method, but its still insignificant. It dabs wicked clean. The flavor is INSANE. I really feel like I'm drinking lavender essential oil or something. We are already thinking of ways to scale this up because we like it so much. I can not stress the terps enough. Its almost too much for me personally with this strain. It makes me actually feel like I'm drooling. I am trying hard to resist the urge to go on a buying spree and press all the buds.

Can't believe this is working so well for you. Seems so simple. The consistency is not what I would expect at all. What iron did you use for this?

Alright you guys convinced me to try this again. Picked up one of those digital remington hair irons and a quarter of headband. Combined it with a lever to get the pressure I wasn't really getting last time.

Worked better, at least well enough to get a decent dab:

The oil from the first presses was amazingly clear- lighter than any BHO I've made or seen. The longer I pressed, the darker it got. Taste is good, not super terpy but these aren't A grade nugs either. It's a lot more fun to make than BHO, I just wish my yields were at higher. At <5%, it's not a very good value proposition.

Which irons are people using ?.... the flat 1", 1-3/4", 2" ? would the widest work better ? and finally... would the digital allow an accurate temp control for our new found use ?

TIA

I used a 1.75" digital one. I don't think digital controls the heat any better (20° increments) but it at least gives you a rough idea of the actual temperature. With analog, unless a temperature range (max and min) is specified, you're just playing a guessing game with the temp adjustment.

I personally would measure the temps myself no matter analog or digital read out of some arbitrary setting.

Easier said then done, my IR gun doesn't like the reflective surface of my wax iron. I don't know how reflective the straight irons are. I need to find a dull surface that can withstand the heat to get an idea of the actual temperature range of these things.

Hopefully tonight will be the night I get to test this out, unfortunately I haven't been able to procure any really high quality buds.

2 inch ceramic Remington with a digital display is what I'm using. It says 320f on the display but I'm not sure how accurate it is. Also, like I mentioned earlier, I lay a flat piece of thin silicone mat (rated up to 500f, advertised as a rest for glass/oil pad) on the bottom ceramic element so the parchment paper doesn't slip around and crumple up when I press down. I press down on it pretty heavy, I have it set up on my floor so that I can shift some of my weight onto it for extra pressure. I am not sure how much the silicone mat affects the heat output of the bottom ceramic it's on, I do know that when I remove the parchment paper and pull the silicone out and feel it that it's quite warm. If I had any flower left I'd do a quick video showing how long I press, it's honestly not more than like 2 seconds per press. I would rather press the squished but a second time than try to get everything out the first go. Like @Bouldorado said the longer I press the darker the oil ends up... I also mentioned some pages back when I first started that the rosin kinda melted into the parchment paper... heat was too high because it stopped happening once I went down to 320.

Perhaps a thermocouple? Should be thin enough to fit inside but I'm not sure what would happen to one if it got squished with the same pressure we're using. You want to use around .2-.25g buds, DS used a .3g piece that came out nicely some pages back. I've only tried it with a few different strains, all top shelf from a dispensary. I think quality in = quality out applies since we're squishing the resin out. I think 10-15% returns are good, anything above 15% is awesome. That's pretty close to the yields when you compare it to other solventless processes, especially considering how well it vaporizes and how you can scale it down to pressing 1 dab at a time. I couldn't imagine how much dry material I'd need to make dry sift or bubble hash that melts similarly.

Keep us posted with pics if you can!

I just found some very old gloves covered in stuff from trimming. Can't even tell how old it is. Maybe a year? I tried vaping it awhile ago and it was too harsh and gross. I took all the gloves, worked them by hand, and ended up with a nice sized pile of dirty dirty finger hash powder. Every sort of comtainiment you could think off. I pressed once. Scrapped off the nasty/hard hash chip and collected the good stuff. It still was pretty dirty so cleaned it up 3 or 4 more times. By pressing and collecting over and over again. Stuff had a lot of containment initially, but also a lot of resins.

From literal trash to shatter stash. This stuff shatters into little fish food looking flakes. Haven't tasted it yet.

I'd estimate 325°F hopefully. My iron has 30 power settings and maxes out at 400F. It is analog. http://m.remingtonproducts.com/wome...Fierce-1-Ceramic-Crackle-Print-Flat-Iron.aspx

So I figure setting 25 is about 325°F. time to bust out the grilling thermometer and confirm.

I think my first few tries were too hot resulting in a lesser yield.

I also read that lower temps make a shatter and higher temps make more a sap. Or do I have it mixed up. I have to reread soilgrowns posts.

I just tried some in Herbalizer with aroma pad and am feeling it real good. Taste wasn't world class, but it was old hash and got me real good.

Edit. Forgot there was bho residue on pad. Will try with a fresh one tommarow

Before and after? Sure :D

Dropped temperature and changed a bit with pressures and it's getting better. Dirty but I'm not hitting this on a nail so I don't care about the particulate. This is kind of addicting, kinda like making hash oil but without the dangers :D

I'm using a ceramic 2 inch hair straightener, 320 degrees. About .25g size buds between parchment paper, press as hard as I can for 2 seconds. I have this thin silicone mat thing I lay on one side of the iron so that nothing slips when I press down. Repeat again to get a second bit. Let it cool and using a safety pin or something you can flick the particulates off before collecting the oil, but if you did it right you won't get much.

@darkrom, I know, I tried it again and it came out a bit better :)

Just filled a Solo stem with flower and topped off the pack with 2 or 3 flakes o
Rosin. Went right to 7 using the Solo inverted ala hamster style. It was a potent, flavorful, and enjoyable. Very clean high. Cerebral too.

Packing up another round.
Anyone have an idea what type of press this is?

Looks like a job for!
Well I'd read about this here and a few other places recently.
Finally decided to go out and grab a flattening iron last night to try it out.
Went to bed frustrated and got no resulting material just flat nugs.
Decided to actually read rather than skim to get more info and techniques and hit it again this morning.

Basically if you can't get this to work, chances are you are just not putting down enough pressure.
Currently I'm @ 320 Ferinheit, with the straightener on a low table such that I can lean my entire body weight down onto it. With the nug packed into a fold of paper I then lean onto the straightener as hard as I think I can without breaking it, push down for ~3 seconds of sizzle.

Pretty excited by this and I might look into a heated shirt printing press if I can find one for cheap or used. Edit: the ghetto press pictured above seems like a great idea. I think my adaptation to that will be to make a cradle for the straightening iron to rest on the drill press table and then use the press to create the downward pressure.

Only problem with a shirt (silk screen) press is it's only one side heat....

Because of the heat iron's being a plastic housing, I foresee issues with putting too much force on the iron and breaking it down the road, so I was quick searching for small heat plates that might work to gerry rig something up...... no luck yet :(
