When I first heard this song I thought it was a tribute to the late and great Marvin Gaye. I was thinking what a rip off when I found out it wasn't.

In the scheme of things I don't think 7 million is that much money when it comes to entertainers. That might not be even enough IMO. Too bad he's not around anymore.

Damn I spelled Robin Thicke's name wrong above.:bang:

It will be interesting. This opens up the flood gates. Unfortunately the lawyers will make all the money.
They could have done a remake and honored Marvin Gaye said so and still made lots of money. It was just too similar IMO to "Got To Five It Up."

I see the similarity for sure.

That said, I don't understand how thousands of songs in hip hop can sample every single old funk, rock, blues, etc... song out there and it's not problem.

But this is.

While I am not really a fan of this song/video, these days nearly every song is a remake or uses samples from older music. So is everyone going to sue everyone?!

and MOST importantly - how does this affect Weird Al ? is mocking plagiarism actionable ?

A musician feels flattered when Weird Al parodies one of his/her songs, and some have said that, that is a sign they have made it.

lets all just face it. new is dead.

this current culture preferences renovated old things referenced as "new"

really... if you think this little thing is bad... try all of pop music... you will find a great many famous people are famous only because someone else was an amazing artist with no connections. writing that music was their job... not performing it.

As Pablo Picasso said,

"good artists copy, great artists steal."

im not saying that famous people deserve this setup... but...

most all bass was originated by one stay at home mom.... thank you Carol Kaye! bass wouldnt be without you!

but she doesnt get shit for credit...

nor does anna gordy gay who actually co-wrote a few of marvins songs....

but who would ever wanna give an ex-wife credit?
