terpenes: limonene

i'm posting this to document my experience so far and see if others have experience adding terpenes. there is anecdotal evidence that terpenes enhance the effect of thc.

i'm having good luck adding limonene to CO2 oil. nice flavor, smell and it makes the oil runnier so it works better in the vape pen. too much will force you to take smaller hits because it's a lung irritant like thc. if you add too much just expose to air and it tends to evaporate back out. tilting a clear pen and observing the viscosity of the oil mix is a crude way of seeing how much limonene it still contains. it can be added to a pen already containing oil. squirt it in. you see two layers initially (oil and limonene) but warm and shake a little and all you have is one runnier liquid.
i was happy with three drops in about a half gram of CO2 oil. YMMV.

this was in a bottom coil pen (no visible wicks). i don't know if it would work mixing in a top coil long wick pen. the wicks might grab all the limonene before it mixes.

i've added it to wax too - mixed right in the jar. the wax gets runnier. too much? leave the jar open and in a few hours its almost back to the way it was - maybe a faint lemon smell.

you can also just put a few drops on your hands, rub and put them over your mouth and nose and hit it that way. don't exhale into your hands or you blow the vapors into your eyes. for me it was a pleasant smell and there was no irritation.

since terpenes are in just about any food that has a smell, we already get varying amounts. maybe if you eat a high terpene diet already you are already seeing the effects (if they exist) - it just seems normal to you.

you can get gel caps of limonene at a health food store. i got 60 softgels 1000mg by jarrow formulas ($10? i don't remember). the label says it comes from steam distillation of orange peels. poke a toothpick in the end and squeeze.

be careful, it is FLAMMABLE. i added a few drops to a preroll and lit it right away. don't do that. the whole joint flames up briefly. let it soak in a bit and evaporate from the paper first.

i've ordered myrcene and will try that next week.

best wishes everyone

i havent tested myrcene yet. limonene evaporates faster than anything i've seen. very odd to work with.

-40 sounds like the temperature where you have an open container at standard pressure and it won't evaporate more than a certain small rate. i think it means we must close our containers is all. i think the spec we are interested in is vapor pressure. the same stable temperatures for limonene and linalool would be higher because they have less vapor pressure.

vapor pressure data from steep hill lab's website:
myrcene 7.00 mmHg ( 20 °C)
pinene
linalool 0.17 mmHg ( 25 °C)
limonene 1.50 mmHg ( 25 °C)

i'm not a chemist so i dont know if vapor pressure and evaporation are simply proportional to each other or something more complex? just for laughs i'll try to see if myrcene evaps about 10x faster and linalool about 4x slower than limonene. i'll have to find the 25 °C value for myrcene and a value for pinene.

so far my impression is that limonene has a large effect mixed with concentrates. i havent tried just vaping limonene to see if i can detect an effect by itself. i seem to be using less wax/oil. all subjective.

it's worth trying limonene injested but vaping has the advantage of getting both thc and limonene in the blood at the same time in case there is a potentiating effect that requires it. i tried a 1000mg cap in a protein smoothie; nice flavor. lemony but much more interesting than just smelling it on your hands. /straightline

sorry. not the first joke i've missed.
No worries. Terpenes are an interesting lot, they are all chemically very similar. A few basic steps of ochem changes them around (what enzymes are doing in the plant). I was in lecture learning about them, my professor said myrcene and I was like, wait where have I heard that before LOL. We had to start with GPP and using ochem turn it into various terpenes, if our mechanism was reasonable we would get credit.

By looking at my avatar you know my favorite! Limonene smells so good.

In my experience with ingesting the Green Dragon tincture I make, adding a drop or two of lemon, lime, or orange essential oil into a cup of tea and downing it along with a few drops of tinc extends the duration of the effects and also enhances the headiness. I also find that a very hoppy beer (full of terpenes) gives a similar result with an added alcohol twist.

Nice thread.

I have been considering for some time buying pure CBD crystals and adding Limonene as these crystals are from what I can tell flavourless.

I was under the impression that one wouldn't want more than 15% terpenes in thier product. Or at least that is the kind of percentage that good bud has.

I was worried that in order to flavour crystals I would have to add more terpenes than is advisable. But reading your post makes me think I could melt the custard with whatever quantity of terps is needed and then let it evaporate off so as to be closer to the desired 15% mark. Might even turn the crystals to a more waxy form.

Not to spike up an old threat but um...

WHERE IN THE WORLD DO YOU GET LIQUIDIZED TERPS FROM?!?!?!?!?!

other than internet...

Or is that my only option & I'm just being ignorant here?

Plz help

Maybe health food stores for gel caps?
Easier to just get them off the bay or other Internet sources though i'd imagine, just search for limonene, then look dor D-limonene in your results.
It's sold in 98% concentrations as a cleaning agent.
God knows what the remaining 2% is though, and God knows where you'd get pharma grade limonene, or L-limonene.

Secreted in the same glands that produce cannabinoids like THC and CBD, terpenes are the pungent oils that color cannabis varieties with distinctive flavors like citrus, berry, mint, and pine. Medical research on cannabis has so avidly focused on cannabinoids that we don’t know much about these aromatic compounds yet. However, we know just enough to realize that terpenes are the next frontier in medical marijuana.

Not unlike other strong-smelling plants and flowers, the development of terpenes in cannabis began for adaptive purposes: to repel predators and lure pollinators. There are many factors that influence a plant’s development of terpenes, including climate, weather, age and maturation, fertilizers, soil type, and even the time of day.

Over 100 different terpenes have been identified in the cannabis plant, and every strain tends toward a unique terpene type and composition. In other words, a strain like Cheese and its descendents will likely have a discernible cheese-like smell, and Blueberry offspring often inherit the smell of berries.

All cannabinoids are terpenoids and the numbers found in the plant are now over 500 identifiable chemical terpenoid constituents.

Limonene and myrcene are monoterpenes that are some of the "legos" that build THC and the rest of the goodness.

Had no idea the numbers were that high, but learning lots in pharmacology.
