I live in Bangkok, Thailand and is having the hardest time deciding between the Pax and Alfa. The Pax is quite a hassle to purchase since I live in Thailand and they only do deliveries to USA and Canada (you also have to use USA/Canadian credit card to purchase them from their website). If I go with the current Pax ($199), I will have to have a friend buy it for me from the US but probably won't be covered when it comes to the 10yr warranty. The Alfa is available on vapefiend in the UK and I can have it shipped no problem. Also heard rumours about the new Pax coming out soon so the question: should I go with the Pax (my friend can get it for me in the US now), wait for new Pax (with likelihood that I'll have to wait for my friend to visit the US again to get them not sure when), or just get the Alfa? And when it comes to vapour quality, does the Alfa outperform the Pax since it's a fairly new model?

So I'm thinkin of selling my pax but it needs a good cleaning first

I'm wondering what everybody recommends I do about that ~classic~ caked on gunkyness in the oven

I didn't want to use steal wool because ploom told me it leaves behind some gunk of it's own -- is this true? How dangerous is that stuff?

Also I apologize if the answer I'm looking for is obvious or an easy find

Everytime I try to get advice on a deep cleaning I get completely different answers from everybody

Any help would be much appreciated

Magic Eraser does the trick on the oven surface. A while ago I had to send my Pax to Ploom for a spring problem and they commented on how clean my daily driver was. Heat it up if you have to. Also, my temp button jams have stopped since I started using 99% iso instead of 91%. Ironically, they sent me several free cleaning kits, where as their positive comment indicates that I have a better handle on cleaning it than they do.

Indeed @berman1125! Finally, a redesigned but still very familiar looking Pax!

Such interesting times.

So they are stating the following as improvements over it's predecessor:

  • Overall 25% smaller and a more streamlined design
  • 10% lighter
  • 20% deeper oven which heats more evenly & provides a more consistent draw
  • Redesigned mouthpiece - unit ships with both flat & and raised style interchangeable mouthpieces
  • Mouthpiece sensor
  • 4 preset temperatures
  • 4 battery level indicators
  • Increased efficiency with up to 30% longer lasting battery
  • USB or A/C charging

$279.99 available to preorder - not shipping until April 2nd.

A deeper oven?!! :o Not to worry! It may be deeper but we now know that it is also actually smaller

Well, it will certainly be interesting to see how Pax2 will fare in the current market - possibly releasing at the exact same time as Grasshopper Labs.

Who's up for taking a dip? :science:

It could be fun! :brow:

:peace:

EDIT: The majority of this post has now been copied over into the new 'Pax 2' thread - http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/pax-2.17617/ :):peace:

I've been holding out for the new one and I'm not really that impressed. It's a deeper oven but not as wide. I like the new charging but not sure how I feel about the mouthpiece. Probably just gonna get a other original

But did they change the oven lid? Can it still pop off if dropped, spilling your load?

Hey @Vaporcussion :)

With regards to the oven lid - I'm thinking not. It appears to look very similar to the original but I guess we may not find this detail out for sure until the unit is in a few members hands & has been field tested.

I do know what you mean about it sometimes popping off, but I can't say I ever lost any botanicals that way - they were always packed in so tight!

There is a new thread just for Pax 2 now, btw - http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/pax-2.17617/

Who is the best person here to talk with about fixing my broken pax on my own? Anyone here have any experience fixing the flashing blue light issue? Any help would be appreciated.

Hey @Woodeeewood :)

At power-up does your Pax briefly start to heat as normal & then suddenly flash blue 10x? If so, I am not 100% sure but I think it is fairly unlikely that it is repairable outside of the Pax workshop.

I think the issue may be caused by the unit not knowing how hot it is getting. For some reason it's unable to read it's own temp. And maybe it is then that it triggers a safety switch & auto shuts itself down to prevent overheating. And it displays the 10x blue flash error.

These are, however, only guesses from my observations & experience.

I have not personally seen a fix for this other than claiming on warranty with the manufacturer.

I am guessing your are not in the U.S or Canada so are unable to claim your warranty?

Apologies in advance if this is totally NOT the issue you are experiencing & I have now chewed your ear off!

Yeah man I'm literally cleaning it right now for the first time with an eraser and it's working really well. Any advice on getting the stuff that's deep in the corners of the oven tho?

This is exactly my issue and yes I am in the US but cannot use warranty. Its had simpler issues in the past and I've voided my warrant to fix those. I am a bit of a diy type. I was pretty certain your reply was the one I was gonna get from reading on here but there are a crap load of pages and thought maybe I had missed something about it. My question now would be, since there is no going back, I wonder if there is a way to bypass this thermoresistor of whatever it was called? Or wonder where I could find documentation of the pax motherboard?

DIY is good but what have you been doing?! :science: Ha ha!

Sorry, but I really don't know where you can find that information, I recall having a search around a while back but I ended up drawing a blank. I think the warranty with Pax has meant that few people have bothered taking them apart & Ploom certainly won't give info to help you do-it-yourself.

I'm open to being proved wrong on all this however, if anyone else would like to chime in?!

D'oh! I see your location now btw @Woodeeewood :)

Well getting the pax made me hate smoking cigs so I started using it for tobacco too. So it was being used constantly almost and being cleaned like 2-3 times a day. This caused my pax a lot of stress and seals started breaking and stuff. So it started tasting horrible and the inside needed cleaning real bad. So I took it apart to clean out all the tobacco and stuff from inside housing. On a good note... My new Alfa will be here in the next day or so.

Break a toothpick in half and use the two broken ends together to push the Magic Eraser into the corners. Or use something else.

The vapor coming from my pax is extremely hot no matter what temperature setting. There is also a burning smell coming from the oven after just one minute of use. I've cleaned it over and over but that doesn't help the problem. Anyone know what the problem could be?
