Micron Screen vs Unbleached Filters

I just picked up a glass tube set up for BHO/Wax. It says it hold 7 grms loose or 14 grms packed so I would say its a small set-up compared to others I've read about. My question is should I use the Micron screen it comes with or should I use the unbleached coffee filters? People say they use 4 filters at a time but I've also read that 2 is enough. Any help is greatly appreciated since this will be my first time and would like to get the most of the Kush I'm using. Also should I grind my herb for better results when I do my wash. I'll take pics and let everyone know how I make out, Thanxs...

i thought the paper filters (2x) assisted in the pressure buildup in the tube. Is this not the case?

@jl420 use a higher micron like 25 and pack the tube tighter. freeze your butane not the tube and all will be well.

freezing the butane will reduce the amount of pressure it is released with.... thus improving dwell time inside the tube without having to restrict outflow at all... which btw restrictions in outflow are what cause blowouts and reduced yield...

interesting, so freeze my butane and only use the ss screen. May have to give this a mini whirl

I have a question for farscaper, when you say to freeze the butane do you mean over-night in the freezer or is their a certain time frame you would recommend. Would a can in a cooler packed with ice do the trick?

I suggest in a freezer for 12 hrs or so. the colder the better...

Why not freeze the tube @farscaper ?
some say it will help... others think not.

the biggest concern with freezing a packed tube is will the material inside form a block of ice due to its own moisture content.

if your running fresh frozen stuff obviously you wanna have that tube frozen. its also best to pre freeze the material before you pack if thats the case.

with cured bud it doesnt matter as much because most of the residual moisture is already gone.

there has been some suggesting that freezing the tube will aid in a dewaxing during the inital run as opposed to having to dewax after. However this may also be unnecessary since the butane effectively flash freezes the material if its cold already. its a debated topic.

it ultimately depends on your situation and weather or not you feel it will aid in your extraction.

I use very dry well cured flowers and I freeze the packed tube and tane. The biggest drawback on this is that the tube (and tane can)get some condensation on the outside(inside too?). To combat this I wrap both with a towel for insulation and to keep any condensate from dripping in my errl. From the looks of the inside of my micron screen it is catching a fair amount of waxes.

what micron have you been running? ive not ventured finer than 25 for a final filter on the tube, I know they have finer available though.

I am using several pipe screens to keep the big stuff out of the micron. I'm using 25 also. I have run from my tube directly through a 10 micron screen folded like a bowl for further filtration. But it must be kept cold as it does not flow freely.

i dont blast tane, but use 25 and then 10. i find that when working with qwet that the 25 micron lets quite a bit of crap through it.

when using 25 only my return is always "half clear". when following up with the 10 its always free of particulate.

btw... just ordered an aeropress and cant wait to do another wash.

I have a question 2clicker, do you feel a 10 micron screen makes that much more of a difference? I am a super noob and getting ready to do my first run and would like to give myself best possible chance of a decent yeild. I'm going to use a glass tube (holds 14g of packed flowers) and a clamped micron 25 screen. Being that it's on the small scale would the 25 micron do the job or will the quality be that noticeable.

well i dont blast tane so i cant really speak to that, but yes there will be a noticeable difference i think. BUT you may be plenty happy with what the 25 micron screen alone will produce. the last time is used 25 only, on a qwet wash, i noticed more particulates getting through than i would like to see personally. it was still really good oil, but could have been better. and of course the more you refine it the less of a return you get.

when you say "decent yield" do you mean quality or quantity? if you want the most refined return you can get... def get the 10. if you still want damn good oil and would like maximize the return amount then id say stick with the 25 and see how it turns out. either way i think you will be happy honestly.

maybe some of the other heads here who blast through SS mesh can advise...?

I did a run yesterday. 11g of some super purple Sour Diesel. In the tube I had 5 pipe screens to catch the big stuff and keep the fine screen clear. Then clamped to the outside I'm using two 25 micron screens. I'm wondering if a coffee filter BETWEEN the 2 micron screens will be beneficial or just overkill. (I think farscaper suggested the using of 2 earlier). It is purging now. Nearly 24 hours in @96F /29"Hg. Pictures to follow.

ive been only using 1 25micron with a loose mesh screen under prevent blockage. I havnt been using the second 25 because I didnt see a huge improvement over 1. however I did see a decent improvement in winterization by freezing the packed tube overnight. this was well cured bud so there wasnt any moisture to combat in the material.

I find freezing prevents the lipids and waxes from precipitating into the solvent. altgough this can delimit a little bit of weight and pehaps a small amount of natural flavor much like the full melt dry sift would have... but those plant waxes and lipids do make me cough alot more.
