Underdog Log Vapes

I ordered the LED Light dimmer off Amazon it showed up Saturday. Ive spent just about every day trying new combinations to get it up to temp. Just seems to run cool, im sure this is due to the 2 additional connection points. So it seems my only option is to get a vvps or just ditch the idea all together and run it straight from the outlet Like the first few days.

I've gotten to share this vape with my friend who only uses the hammer and he loves it. He words was "Jesus must have made this... he was a carpenter right..?" And also got my gf trying it, she has used my other 3 vapes (pnp, hammer, vapman) and likes this on the best.

I couldn't agree more with my friends opinions. This is by far the best vape I own right now and might ever own at that. That is atleast until the next pup finds its way over to Pennsylvania and into my life haha.

Soo with the vvps question again is the general consensus to get a cheap one Amazon..?

Heya Kid, I can't really tell for sure from the pic but that looks like an variac which is a variable transformer for AC voltage (for varying line voltage input) can you confirm? If so be advised that AC/DC power supplies may be designed to work with minimum AC input levels and dimming that input can be akin to them experiencing a 'brown out' and can burn them out. :2c:

It is exactly what you said.. And it was more of a joke, I hope no one takes it serious and tries it haha, any chance I could run it off of a solar converter? We have tons of them and I just realized how easy it would be to hook up on the back side of our property..

Hey Philreal, since you already have the LED dimmer you might try paring it with a slightly higher voltage wall-wart like a 13.5v or maybe even a 15v one so that you have a little more heat to 'dim' down from. Just bear in mind if you were to give that a try that the full-on setting the dimmer would be outputting potentially damaging power levels to the Dog so don't let it get turned up all the way.

As far as VVPS go I think that Tekpower is about the best quality for the price that you can get, many
people are using to good effect.

Ah, good to know.. sometimes I can't tell if someones joking and feel obligated to be 'captain-bring-down' lol. Explain what you mean re: the solar converter a bit better and I'll advise (or be a smart-ass) about that too. :cool:

I thought that It ought to work if you make sure to keep the output power low enough, but a little bit of a clockwise turn of that dial and your screwed.

(on a sidenote: love your pic on photobucket with a vape and "HWY 61 revisited" that and "Blonde on Blonde" are two of my favorite get vaped and sing along albums)

I don't know the specifics of the solar converters we have at home, but I'll definitely look more into it when I make it home. that would be a great way to enjoy a nice day!

Actually just realized we have a solar set up to a battery with a sine wave converter for ac power and we use it for heaters in deer stands, so it should work?

As for the car adapters, if they don't have any specs on them (ie: they are not transformer adapters), they should be fine. Just be warned that car adapters output whatever voltage your car is outputting, which could possibly be an awesome 12 volts or could be a raging 14 volts, especially if the car is running. This warning goes for all car adapters.

I'm totally new to this so bear with me. If I picked up a 13.5 to 15v wall wart this would put out more voltage than the one I have? So with the dimmer I would have a little more play with the voltage? This would basically be a vvps minus the digital display just the dail, thats my understanding.

Sorry for the rookie questions I just have about zero knowledge with electronics and electricity out puts.

Yep, exactly so. The stock wall-wart puts out about 12.25v to 12.5v (for comparison) so a 13.5v to 15v would give you a little more play in combo with the dimmer. You'd need to be careful not to let the dimmer be turned all the way up though as the higher 13.5v to 15v output is enough to cause damage if not 'dimmed' down. Hope that makes sense?

Not yet. I'll get a blacklight flashlight just to shine at my underdog soon. Gotta free up some spare cash for that totally pointless, but entertaining, purchase first!

I can't really offer any insight as I don't really have a lot of knowledge in this area but generally speaking I think protected cells are the way to go. I think there may be exceptions in certain high current or high drain applications but don't know how or if that applies to this case.

Maybe @CentiZen can chime in with some input, he's somewhat of a battery expert I think. :cool:

Thanks. I'll wait for one of you battery geniuses to tell me why I'm going to cause a thermonuclear war by accident if I use the wrong battery. Usually it was @OF preventing me from wasting my money or doing something stupid in the thermovape threads. I know just enough to cause a problem and have things working the dangerous way it seems.

Oh btw blacklight flashlights are only like $7 with amazon prime. I'll grab one when I order batteries and I'll take some more pics of how it looks under the light.

Edit- I went ahead and bought 2 of the battery VVPS, 4 protected 18650's, Nitecorei4, and the Tekpower VVPS. Will need a lab style cord now with my UD order. Itching to get that Lost Dog. You may want to go with protected ones, although Panasonics are high quality.

Does this battery VVPS not charge the batteries as well when plugged in? I sold my nitecore i4

Wasn't planning on buying a charger AND batteries :/

Protected cells always a good idea, but the unit that Underdog linked looks like it has a protection system built into it. I'm also pretty sure it charges the batteries as well through the microUSB connection. Probably not a fast charge but it should work.

In this situation, NCR18650B cells are probably the best bet - good capacity and good price

I got a kick out of the warning on that eBay page though:
"Warning: battery must be correct connect, otherwise will burn"

Ok guys, I think my dog is sick or something. It works great sometimes, but others it is not getting hot enough to vape. I let it warm up for over an hour this morning. The wood was not as warm as it normally gets. I tried running a stem through it anyways. I got no visible vapor and my product was still green. I checked the power supply and it was reading 12.29V. Plugged it back in let it sit for another 15 minutes and gave it a rip, and nothing same thing as before. Did some things around the house came back about an hour later and the dog was finally warm like normal and hit as good as ever. It has done this in the past but, it seems to happen more frequently. I Have always checked with my multi meter when it doesn't work and the volts always read close to 12.3V so power supply isn't the issue. Has anyone had an issue with there core not heating up fully sometimes? Seems like if something went wrong it just wouldn't work at all. Love this vape so far but this has me stumped. I have only had it about 6 months. Thanks

It sounds as if you've got an intermittent failure most likey either a loose connection (in the UD or a dying cord) or a power supply that's failing. Most frequently it's a cord problem (try without the extension if you're using one), next would be power supply and finally the UD itself.

You can send it in for a checkup or try troubleshooting to figure out the source of the problem. Myself, Underdogette or other Dog owners here can help troubleshoot.

I am thinking though when I plug it in to the UD. It may not be getting enough amps, and some voltage drop from my crappy apartment outlets. Do you know how many amps it should pull at 12.3V? I want to measure how many it is pulling. Just not sure what my constant should be.

At 12.3v the UD should draw between .6A and .75A :science:
