Ok, so what is ASMR. It stands for: Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. So what does that mean. Until Mrs. DieHard told me about this, I had never heard of it. Quite frankly if it were not for the huge amount of ASMR videos on YouTube, I would have called her or anyone mentioning it crazy. Here's a link that describes it and gives some example videos. http://mashable.com/2015/01/26/asmr-youtube/
Aparently you need some good headphones to experience this. Not everyone will be able to experience this mystery pleasure. As of now I have not, but I haven't tried. I have great fun poking at Mrs DieHard about it though. Anyway check out the link and post up your thoughts and experiences. Google-fu ASMR. I will do the same.:)

I think I know the feeling, however these videos don't really cause it for me. only the mouth-sounds video slightly triggers it, but only slightly.

I don't find it an enjoyable feeling though, I find it feels really uncomfortable. with this video is triggered so slighltly I could hold out foir a while, but my strongers triggers are things I avoid because of it. for example a certain shreek-noise, sometimes caused by wet shoes on a floor, somewhat close to nails on a schoolboard, but just a tad different( can withstand nails on a schoolboard without any discomfort). also touching glass that has just been washed in a dishwasher. I think it's because of the residue left on the glass, rinsing it with water so the glass is wet stops the discomfort.

also a few weeks back when I had my hair cut, the barber used an electric shaver to trim my neck, and I got a really bad case of it caused by the vibration on on certain parts of my neck, was very hard to keep my head somewhat still. but that was somewhat different from the feeling caused by sounds.

edit:
because the feeling I know isn't comfortable at all I'm not really sure it's the same, but the tingling part and the location does fit.
I also know another feeling that is less uncomfortable(more neutral), but it has a different location. sometimes when I have had a moment of extreme focus or deep thought(thinking about the universe for example) I get this tingly feeling starting at the top of my head instead of my neck, wich then spreads over my head. it's especially easily triggered when I look up at the stars during a summernight, and start thinking about how much is out there, how small in comparison I am and how vast the distances are. this feeling isn't really soimething I seekj out either, my feelings about it are more neutral, but I do like such kind of thinking so the feeling is somewhat associated with good times/being in a good mood)

Mrs. DieHard only gets the feeling when wearing headphones. She is especially sensitive (read : can't stand) nails on chalkboard, squeaky styrofoam, metallic squeals, etc. The more positive feeling you described sounds like what she describes. Sometimes she describes feelings in different areas as well. Some of what she describes as triggers would be absolutely intolerable to me, especially through headphones.

I used headphones too, but all those triggers in the youtubevideos didn't do it for me(well, the mouthsounds did it slightly as I said, but only slightrly after I listened to it for a while)
now that you mention it, squeaky styrofoam is indeed also one of those sounds I can't stand. it's basically the same sound as the dishwasher-washed glass, only does the glass not make noise, but the feeling/texture of the glass basically has the same vibration-feeling as the squeaky styrofoam-noise.

AND if it happens to actually BE broken glass wrapped in squeaky styrofoam, scratching on a chalkboard, Mrs DieHard would spontaneously combust! Aack Fuck combustion. She has told me that I could make an ASMR video describing all of my vaping supplies and handling them and whispering. I'm not sure I could do it without being hysterical. I never realized that this was such a huge "rabbit hole" on YouTube. I may have to actually put on some headphones and try.

Okay... wow, didn't know that there was a name for this. I read most of the article, then went to YouTube and found this one that turned the tingles on! Wow.. weird, and fun.

Thank you.

Maybe it's because I love libraries, all things books, and so there are already positive associations.

I get a LOT of the sensations from touch... having sounds trigger the same, though slightly different, is pretty amazing.

*tap tap* Is this thing on? Seriously, I didn't mean to kill the thread.

I'm thinking, hey, @DDave , how does this stuff hit you? I'm remembering things from my childhood, the rhythmic tapping, running my fingers along edges, repeatedly, just to listen to the various sounds.

Yup, got yelled at often. Had books taken away, etc., but this is reconnecting sound for me. Hubby has tried some, too. He hates "whispers"... but some of the "just sounds" ones are pretty cool.

The ASMRtist that you posted is Mrs. Diehards fave!
The tapping by someone else makes me batshit. Now doing it myself is another story... I'm an incessant tapper/ noise maker too.

I use music as therapy for my sensory issues.... diffrent repetitive tones can actually induce mood changes and psychological issues... which can in response be modified again by diffrent frequencies. music is the easiest to use for me because it already tends to have a certain tone of emotion.

oh yea... and its all enhanced by WEEED man! so I tend to use that at the same time.

hell yea its an enhancement drug lol.

There are so many out there! I like GentleWhisperer, the one above, and I've also found Heather Feather who I like more... but the non-verbal, just tones, brush sounds, whirring, etc., are also out there.

It's amazing! This is more fun with MJ, of course ;)

that gentle whisper initally made me chuckle... then I got sooooo frustrated with the way she talks I turned it off...
isnt it weird how some sounds and textures can be initally pleasant and then turn into a rather uncomfortable experience?

at least for me it is, but I am cursed with hyper sensitivity to textures, smells and noise.

Yes, I agree, @farscaper ... I threw about a dozen off Youtube into a "watch later" queue, and weeded through them... only takes a minute or two to determine if I can stand what they are doing/how they are doing it. I'm not done sorting, but I've found a handful of really great ones.

One is a guy called Ephemeral Rift. I love his brushing sounds, and his voice is okay, but he jumps around a lot. Have you tried Bob Ross? There are plenty without voices. Do a search on "asmr no voice"

yup. I do the bob ross. I start as many days as I can with a brush in hand. I just dont show off what I make much.

the sound of the brush and mostly the feel of it moving on streched canvass specifically, but some times I just push keif around on a plate with a brush, along with a morning buzz.... pure euphoria  nothing but focus ... and then time stops.

@Enchantre , most definitely!

I rhythmically tapped so often, everyone was sure I would eventually be a drummer. I can chant repeatedly without knowing it, if a rhythm or string of words catches my interest. Music, if I like it, I can listen to songs repeatedly.... (I have 12 in a song list now that if I need to tune out of the world to concentrate on work, I can play in headphones at a low volume and no matter what other noise is around me, I hear neither the noise or the music... it's just peaceful).

During childhood, and through to adulthood... rhythm has been part of my life.

Music, on the other hand, musical notes escape me... shame, I think I could have come up with some pretty off the wall stuff!
