Comic Books (And The Movies / Shows Based On Them)

Sorry, didn't mean to offend!

I'm talking about his back story changing, and all of the ones that were supposed to be dead showing back up. Granted, I have not read all the comics, but I find it a little amusing.

Yeah, I saw his mother killed. I'm expecting her back next season. Just like Malcolm. And the sister. With Tommy.

If it pisses you off that much, I'll not comment then. Sorry.

Doesn't piss me off at all- did not mean it to seem that way. I just found it a surprising assertion given the body count the show has had. There have been no rumors of any of those characters returning, while it was known before he was 'killed' that Merlin was coming back. Still possible of course, but no leaks or rumors about that, and it is a pretty leaky set.

I do agree, they altered a lot of the back story and setting almost unrecognizably. And it is far less brutal than the old Green Arrow comics, which I loved. But I expect that kind of watering down on most TV. Of course I'd love them to let Arsenal become a junky and lose his arm, but I really don't see that happening on the network the show is on. DC canon being messed with doesn't bug me as much as Marvel canon being wrong, though, because DC has repeatedly reset their continuity. It's something they've done for decades.

I could maybe see the coming Dreadstar TV project being as violent as it should be, only because the creator, Jim Starlin, is involved.

Some news from something that is allegedly staying as murder-filled as the comic book - Morena Bacarin has been cast as the lead female (one assumes Vanessa) in Deadpool.

Here's a scoop (I'm fully engaged w/ deadpool now :brow:):

Morena Baccarin Nabs Female Lead in 'Deadpool' (Exclusive)
morena_baccarin.jpg

Homeland
star Morena Baccarin has nabbed the female lead in Deadpool, Fox's action movie based on the Marvel character.

Tim Miller is directing the action-adventure project, which stars Ryan Reynolds as an assassin who undergoes a procedure to cure his cancer that ends up leaving him twisted and scarred but also imbued with superpowers.

T.J. Miller and Gina Carano are already attached to the project, which is eyeing a March shoot and is slated for an early 2016 release.

Baccarin was one of a handful of actresses shortlisted for the role of Reynolds' character's love interest. The character grapples with falling for a man with a hideously scarred face.

If they are staying with any variant of the script the test footage was based on (which they apparently are, as Colossus will be in it, and he is not connected to Deadpool in any of the comics) then she is playing Vanessa (Copycat).

However, she is just Vanessa- the script does not have her being Copycat, or even being a mutant. It does give her some awesome lines though. And they could reveal her as a mutant in subsequent flicks.

In DC news, I am not normally a fan, but the 1st pic of Jason Momoa as Aquaman got released today, and it is pretty fucking awesome. If this is an indication, Aquaman will soon no longer be the joke he has been for a while.

^ Looking good, but more like prince namor imo!

Heh. I was just having an extensive Namor vs Aquaman argument with my brother in law, who is very much a DC fan.

I totally agree with you. Aquaman has previously been blond, Namor is dark haired. Aquaman was a joke for decades, Namor never has been. I could easily see Momoa as Namor.

DC has apparently beefed up Aquaman's powers, making him something of a Thor of the sea with some Professor X style powers. Sounds like cheating to me, but that's why I only ever collected a couple of DC titles (Green Arrow, the Flash, Green Lantern, some Batman). But I will go see the Aquaman movie, despite Zack Snyder's involvement.

In straight-up comic book collectible news, I gotta crow about this. Just got, still new in box, a honking HUGE Galactus action figure (19 inches) with a small Surfer. Galactus' head lights up and he talks. Awesomeness.

I tend to enjoy this show, but only when they're actually talking about comics / collectibles / old shit and the worth / prices. The "B' stories of this show are atrocious.

Not a bad watch if you're coming down from a night of heart racing and want something to numb your mind while also giving you a decent gauge of how big a nerd you are, or aren't.

Walt is my favorite - he's like Comic Book Guy from The Simpsons.

Show some respect! I'm the OP! :D

Fallout from the Sony-Marvel agreement on sharing Spidey- big chunk of the Marvel film release schedule reshuffled. Among other things, Thor: Ragnarrok, Black Panther and Captain Marvel each moved about 6 months.

http://www.newsarama.com/21815-the-new-full-comic-book-superhero-movie-schedule.html

And James Gunn admitted it was not just for shits and giggles that Adam Warlock's cocoon was seen intact in the middle of Guardians and burst open in the post-credits scene. WARLOCK IS COMING!! WHOO HOO!! Kind of has to- no character is more connected to Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet than Warlock. Shit, the Soul Gem lives on Warlock's head, and in Infinity War and Infinity Crusade, aspects of Warlock are the villain (Magus and Goddess) and Thanos is a good guy, in his own warped way. Not to mention Warlock and the Infinity Watch.

Speaking of which - currently trying to get my hands on the full Infinity Gauntlet from SDCC 2014. If/when I get it will post a pic (after I wield it and BECOME A GOD BWUHAHAHAHA).

@RUDE BOY - probably a good thing you avoided it. If you think VAS and GAS are bad, comic book obsessions can be worse. I used to steal comics just to keep up with what was happening. Like a crackhead for Marvel. I wouldn't eat lunch all week so I could use my milk money for comics.

On the other hand, it was probably good practice for my vape and glass obsessions.

Here's an extreme example- my brother in law is not a canna user (or substance user of any kind). His ONLY obsession is comics. We sat down the other day to figure out how much he has spent over the years. Holy shit. in 40 years or so of collecting, he has probably spent over $150K on comics and comic collectibles. Fills one and a half rooms in his home. And he is not a wealthy person. Was raised quite poor in the projects of the South Bronx. For perspective, he has spent less than $70K on education his entire life. And he cannot bring himself to sell any of his comics or collectibles. He literally starts twitching when he thinks about doing so.

Watching a 50 year old get twitchy and weepy over back issues of Thor and Superman is a bit disturbing. Hell, when he married my sister and converted to Judaism, he cited the Jewish influence in comics (Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, Jerry Siegel, Joe Shuster, Bob Kane, Joe Simon) as much as the fact that he was marrying a Jewish woman. His hebrew name is even Samson, one of two biblical characters Superman was based on. His wedding cake and wedding yarmulkes had the Superman symbol on them (I have a very understanding sister).

Space is the Place
instead of comics my passion that started around 12 years old is theological text and sacred writings which started after my first acid trip due to reading 'be here now' and the 'Bhagavad gita' both in one night during that trip.
[EDIT] ...

I'm loving the comic based shows on CW and Gotham's one of my favorites, but reading this thread I feel I missed out on more back story for all the Marvel/DC shows and movies I've seen in the last few years than I ever Knew existed.

@RUDE BOY Funny, I am also obsessed with theological, spiritual and related writings and have been since childhood. Almost became a rabbi but went atheist buddhist and got a PhD in religious studies instead. Kabbalah tatts up one arm, Buddhist up the other.

Given your interests, you should try to check out some Silver Surfer, Warlock, and Thanos related comics. All very mythical and theo-spiritual (Though Thanos in a very very dark way- he is a god-like nihilist in love with the embodiment of Death, and at one point he actually briefly becomes God with the capital G- rumor is they're not going to include the "in love with death" thing in the movies he's going to be in).

I recommend starting with the Stan Lee and Moebius Silver Surfer: Parable (http://www.amazon.com/Silver-Surfer-Parable-Stan-Lee/dp/0785162097#) or some of the Warlock comics from the 70s. Then tackle some Thanos (Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, Infinity Crusade, Infinity Abyss, Thanos Imperative, Thanos Rising, Infinity, Infinity Revelation).

In terms of missing out on backtories, there is an advantage to that. Some of the biggest fights among comic book geeks these days is about whether it's ok for them to be revamping origins, story and character for TV and movies (which has been done to some degree in every adaptation so far). For example, Arrow has Green Arrow's and Arsenal's origins all messed up. Ditto the origin of everybody on the Flash (the characters predate particle accelerators). And I can't even get started on what Marvel has done- suffice it to say that they can't use the word 'mutant' on Agents of SHIELD or any of their movies. So they declare characters that have been mutants from the get-go - some for almost as long as I've been alive- not to be. You don't have to get all angried up over any of that. The true comic book geek like me and others here can't help it.

So far Gotham is the least off of the shows, IMO. But it still has all sorts of issues, for the serious DC comics fan. Too many identifiable future characters being thrown at the audience all at once, when in the comics they were introduced gradually. And the whole time period thing. The show has a noir look, but it should be taking place in the actual noir period. Instead everybody has cell phones. At this rate, by the time Batman happens, all his tech will be available at Wal-mart.

See, i went off there. Couldn't help it. Be thankful that isn't you.

Arrow is awesome...i never read comics...but i watch the shows.

Arrow - awesome cuz its semi realistic...no super powers...but EVERYONE knows its oliver queen except the one cop its too funny and kinda ridiculous

The Flash- dope and entertaining but EXTREMELY Corny and lame compared to the arrow...has a smallville feel to it

Gotham - i really like this show i think it has so much potential and the way they include the riddler and other villains before their time has come is awesome

Im more into shows than movies...Antman is going to be interesting...flop? I think it may be

I'm hoping they're going a bit comical with Ant-man, which given the casting and the teaser trailer seems to be happening. I liked that they even make fun of the name 'Ant-man' in the trailer.

That is potential growth area for the movies and tv. Some of the most popular characters among comic book readers are the ones who are funny - Spider-man and Deadpool most obviously (Deadpool has been written by a comedian for a couple of years now, and Spidey has always had a mix of comedy and high drama).

Netflix's daredevil looks like it could be a good series...

...it seems like they're going for a dark, frank miller-like interpretation.

I am definitely willing to give the Netflix Marvel (Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage) the benefit of the doubt. And Daredevil certainly looks very true to the comic in terms of grit and violence. I'm especially psyched to see David Tennant as Kilgrave/Purple man.

But, given the plots and characterizations we've seen so far and what other projects are coming, I'd bet good money Daredevil is far more Brian Michael Bendis than Frank Miller. Bendis wrote Daredevil long before he wrote the Avengers, and actually wrote it for longer than Miller- Miller wrote it for 2 years then came back for a brief run; Bendis wrote it for 5 straight years, 55 issues in a row.

And keep in mind how much of the MCU and Sony flicks are the Bendis version of the characters and stories. The Captain America in the movies has more in common with the Ultimate Cap- superhuman rather than peak human strength and healing, friendship with Bucky pre-dates his becoming Cap; the Spider-man movies, both the Raimi and the later ones, have more in common with Ultimate Spider-man than the original (origin is from a genetically engineered, not radioactive, spider; Parker's parents were scientists working for Oscorp, not CIA agents who knew Fury; Venom has no connection to Secret Wars); the movies used the Ultimate Nick Fury - who was actually visually based on Samuel Jackson, who of course ended up playing him. Even the Fox X-men has many Ultimate elements - no magic/mysticism, no secret identities, mutants openly known and hated from the get-go, Magneto responsible for Professor X's paralysis.

Bendis created the Ultimate universe and wrote Ultimate Spider-man. He created Jessica Jones, brought Luke Cage back and made him leader of an Avengers team (and dropped the Power-man stupidity), plus as noted wrote 55 issues of Daredevil. Bendis (and Mark Millar) wrote Civil War, the next Captain America movie; he has been writing Guardians since 2013. Age of Ultron (the comics) was Bendis. Quake/Daisy, who Skye on SHIELD turned out to be, is a Bendis character. Powers, another upcoming Marvel TV thing, is purely a Bendis creation. I could go on. In fact, the only writers who come close to his impact on the Marvel Cinematic/TV Universe are Lee & Kirby (who of course created most of the characters) and Jim Starlin (creator of Thanos, the Infinity Gauntlet, and Gamora, long-time author of Warlock and other "cosmic" Marvel).

I am a huge fan of Bendis - frankly I think he is a far better writer than Miller - but his dominance is getting to be a little much. Still, there are worse writers to use as the core of the movie and tv projects.

UPDATE: I have won the bidding for the Infinity Gauntlet. It is on it's way. Soon I will RULE THE UNIVERSE!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHA!! And according to one of those stupid quizzes, "Which Marvel Villain Are You?", I am THANOS. So apparently half the universe is in serious danger. We knew Thanos was bald, but who knew he was a bald dumpy Jewish vaper?

Moderate amount of news today.

First, a casting call for the Supergirl TV show describes what is pretty obviously a call for someone to play Superman.

http://tvline.com/2015/02/24/supergirl-cbs-casting-superman/

Next, a full Age of Ultron poster has come out. In this one you can see the Vision, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch.

Last of the news, more DC - according to Dwayne "Was the Rock but soon to be Black Adam" Johnson, the Shazam movie may be coming 'sooner than expected'.

http://www.newsarama.com/23612-dway...may-come-earlier-than-what-was-predicted.html

SPOILER ALERT below for those who have not read the comics - so cease reading if you care.

And then there's last night's Gotham. Multiple Red Hoods, none of them the Joker (Red Hood becomes the Joker in every comic book version of Joker's origin I know of). There have been at least three potential Jokers on Gotham so far. I'm still hoping it's creepy Jerome who killed his momma last week.

I'll post a closeup of the Gauntlet when it comes, for now here is the pic from the auction. It's from SDCC 2014, and with the Gauntlet has four figures: Eros (Starfox), Thanos, Lady Death and Nebula. Hate to say it, but there is no way this is staying in the packaging. I WILL be wearing it.

Even more TV coming- Matt Fraction and Kelly Sue DeConnick have signed a deal with Universal TV to develop their creator-owned titles for TV.

http://www.newsarama.com/23631-deconnick-fraction-sign-tv-deal-with-universal.html

Both have written extensively for Marvel and also own the titles/characters they've done for Image. Fraction is an Eisner award winner.

Nice to see a female comic author getting a deal like this. Though IMHO Gail Simone is a much better writer than DeConnick, Marvel and DC own Simone's stuff (she is so far the only woman who has written/ran Deadpool, some of the funniest, including Agent X).

And another Age of Ultron poster, this one just RDJ. He tweeted along with an assertion that a "big announcement" is coming in 8 days. Possibly announcing his final Iron Man stand-alone movie. He has to be there at least through Captain America: Civil War or it won't work (not to mention that losing him defeats the purpose of getting to use Spider-man in Civil War- with Iron Man, Captain America and Spider-man they can almost do Civil War for real.

And what do folks think of the two bad guy appearances in Agent Carter last night? Surprised of just ho-hum (I lean ho-hum).

And here's a geek test. A friend of mine pointed me at this- someone's attempt to chart all the romantic interactions in Marvel. If you are a serious geek, the 1st thing you'll notice is how much is missing. That was my reaction. A sign I have read way to many comics.

Here are some freebies- there is only one Captain Marvel on the chart, who is not even identified (there have been at least six, three of them female); at least half of Wolverine's lovers are missing, for instance Squirrel Girl; Death is only connected to Deadpool- where is Thanos? All of the gay characters seem to have been left out. And according to this, Sabretooth has only had one girlfriend, which is simply not the case. And Namor only involved with Emma Frost? Please, the dude is literally the oldest Marvel character, and has been entangled with a large chunk of the women in the comics (and I assume some fish).

What do you see is missing?

And I don't know about y'all, but I am deeply conflicted about last night's Arrow. Don't want to spoil it for anyone, but they went waaaaay off-canon at the end of the episode- actually stole (even more) Batman continuity and spliced it onto the Arrow. Even by Arrow standards, which has been off-canon from the get-go, this is a bit much. If you don't care about canon, it's a funky plot twist. But if you care about the comics at all, it is disturbing. Especially Oliver Queen's apparent reaction.
