Anyone try ABV Butter using a Mota Pot?

I've already tried to infuse new butter with the same abv puck. No big difference so it's not worth it from my point of view.
And let's face it: it's been vaped and infused once. I know weed is expensive but that's a bit too much. Isn't it?

Yes, LOL

Great thread, thank you all for the information.

I went ahead and procured the $12-ish Moka Pot from Amazon and am going to try @lazylightning's vegan approach this afternoon.

It has an 8 ounce water chamber, so I'll be doing 4 ounces water, 4 ounces Coconut Oil. Haven't weighed the ABV yet, but will make a note of it so I can determine potency for my first run.

I'll post back my results.. although it may be a few days. I'm not really into the edible high, but didn't want to just toss my ABV.

Lastly, I liked the chocolate idea. Is that doable with Coconut Oil, or would it just taste odd? I know nothing of cooking and freely admit it.

Chocolate and coconut is OK if you like Bounty chocolate bars.

I purchased one of the cheaper versions online and I have a gas stove my unit was so whopper jawed after one use it was crazy. Needless to say, waste of $18. I did purchase an Easy Butter Maker but I got the two stick unit. Amazing little product we took it camping and it didn't whopper jaw the unit at all. I have made oil and butter with this unit and I'm impressed!!

That Easy Butter Maker looks to be about the same thing as the moka pots we've been discussing...but it's $70! My Italian-made Bialetti is considered one of the best moka pots available and is only $45 full retail. I'd feel bad charging mmj patients $70 for something I knew they could buy so much cheaper.

So I just made a new batch of canna-chocolates for valentines day - I bought a set of silicone chocolate heart molds :p

This time I had about 12g of ABV, crushed very fine, to 1 stick of sweet butter, in the espresso maker. Made a VERY dark green/brown butter, but it looked a lot better after the sludgy water was removed.

I wanted to up the concentration of both the ABV (12g vs 8g) and use a bit more butter per chocolate. So I mixed it with 1 and 1/3 bars of Godiva 72% Cacoa Dark Chocolate (vs the (2) bars last time). So about 4.5oz of chocolate.

This appears to be almost perfect for 30 little hearts.

So my daughter wanted to know why I like using dark chocolate with the ABV-canna-butter, and I told her cause the chocolate adds it's own set of beneficial compounds that enhance the cannaboids, such as...
  • Tryptophan and serotonin: They create feelings of relaxation and well-being.
  • Caffeine: This psychoactive substance creates temporary alertness.
  • Xanthines: This mild stimulant occurs naturally in the brain and, like caffeine, increases wakefulness.
  • Theobromine: This stimulant and vasodilator increases blood flow.
  • Phenylethylamine: This compound stimulates the brain to release dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of pleasure and motivation.
  • Anandamide: This neurotransmitter activates pleasure receptors in the brain.
  • Flavonols: Found also in foods like red wine, blueberries and green tea, these compounds boost blood flow to key areas of the brain for two to three hours after being metabolized, creating effects similar to those of a mild analgesic (painkiller) like aspirin.

The Mota Pot that I have will only infuse 1/8 cup of herb at a time and 1/2 cup of butter or coconut oil. I bought it off Amazon for $45. When I ran the 1/8 C ABV with the butter once or twice it wasn't strong enough.

I want my butter or coconut oil really potent. I only want to use a tablespoon and it to be enough butter to get me medicated. Mainly I need this for sleep and when I have a big flair up pain wise. I don't want to have to use a lot because of the fat and calories.

I have run my butter through 4 times so far and it seem pretty potent. So I just keep infusing the same butter with new ABV each time. I don't grind up the ABV too fine so it won't go through the little holes. I cool it down in the freezer then I start over again. It has a wonderful flavor too.

Last night I mixed up a tablespoon of butter with some apple sauce and cinnamon and heated it up, it was so good. An hour later I was ready for bed. I slept soundly and only woke up once then fell back to sleep. I didn't feel too sleepy this morning either.:)
Here is the finished product. With the lights it doesn't look green but it's an olive green color.

@CarolKing, couldn't you just use less coconut oil and more water in your Mota Pot? I would think that the ratio of oil to water would be pretty adjustable. I know I've used my moka pot with varying ratios of oil/water and it seemed to work the same each time...just more potent with less oil.

I make my high potency coconut oil with about 3.5gm flower per ounce of oil. That means there's a bit over ½ gram of flower per teaspoon of oil, resulting in a product 4x stronger than the Mota Pot recipe.

Hey, good thread. I have a feeling this tastes better than the hot oil I have been pouring on top of ABV, because this way the oil never exceeds 212 F. I am going to try this. I had one of those aluminum stovetop espresso makers long ago but it's gone somewhere along the way. I am going to buy a new one. Any recommendations based on sturdiness, usability, size, ease of cleaning etc?

Check out Amazon. I bought mine for $45 and it's really easy to clean, it's small. I see others have spent less for theirs.

I'd pick a size based on the volume of material you want to process at one time. There's a very large range of sizes since the Mota Pot holds ⅛ oz and my moka pot holds nearly an ounce.

If you're unsure, I'd suggest that smaller is better so you can do more tests with less material each time. You could always get a larger size once you've figured out your favorite ratios.

@Gunky the one I posted above worked great for my trial run. Less than 20 minutes of work, and I have some infused coconut oil still waiting to be tested. I was able to fit 5.5 grams of ABV into the chamber.

As a first attempt I went the cheap route and purchased a $12.37 Mota Pot off of Amazon. It worked perfectly, was easy to clean, and will last many years.. it's a simple design.

If you want to test the waters, this won't set you back much.

I grow my own, vape a lot and have quite a bit of ABV so I was thinking of something larger than the Mota pot. I was looking at the 6 cup Bialetti Venus model here . Comments on that? I presently live in a place with a glass top electric stove with biggish burners, so it is helpful to have as large diameter base as possible.

That's the one I have. I get 24 gm of dry ABV to fit in the filter cup. I think it's a great choice and you can't go wrong with Bialetti.

Good recipe but that 's a bit too long for me. Moreover I don't need my butter to be so strong. I'm too afraid of an excess in my brownie and not being able to work fine. (Sorry for my bad english. Not so easy to speak right after bed ^^)

Great idea! The biggest variable with moka pots is getting the heat right to maintain the perfect amount of pressure inside the pot. A good electric moka pot should do that automatically.

If I were to try this, is there any reason not to get this one? Amazon Expresso Maker.

This is very tempting. If I DO try it, I will likely get the one @nihil recommended. I suspect SS is a better choice than Aluminium.

That stainless pot looks like a great deal and does seem like a better choice than aluminum.

My aluminium mota pot was used by my grandfather everyday for a long, long, long time. Nothing to notice. And you can find heavy used Bialetti in every italian home. Nobody got hurt.
So I'll just get along with it. Maybe when it breaks, I'll get a SS one. Don't over think it. What you smoke/vape is probably worst for your health.

Yesterday I finally tried using my Bialetti Venus 6 cup moka pot to make cannabis coconut oil with top shelf flower. I had 24 grams of mixed strains, all tested at 20% THC or above. I ground in my SCS grinder and decarbed in the oven at 225F for 52 minutes.

eYgppMV.jpg

Then I used just 4 oz of MCT coconut oil and filled with water up to the valve on the moka pot.

p8b3GGB.jpg

I ran it through the moka pot and reclaimed all 4 oz of the oil.

CJG4hpD.jpg

It was the first time I tried the MCT coconut oil and didn't realize it would stay liquid in the refrigerator. I ended up putting it in the freezer for an hour or so and the water froze beneath the oil, allowing the oil on top to pour out.

20vjPOP.jpg

With the flower/oil ratio I used, there is 1gm of flower per teaspoon of oil (6 tsp per oz x 4 oz = 24 tsp). I used the same ratio I use to make oil in my Magical Butter machine. That way I was able to compare the strength of the moka pot oil with the Magical Butter oil. If there is any difference in potency it is minimal. I could tell no difference between the oil brewed for 4 hours in the Magical Butter machine and the oil that took 15 minutes in my moka pot. A 1 teaspoon dose contains ~200mg of THC so many people would only need ¼ or ½ teaspoon for a potent effect.

I stil prefer the Magical Butter machine for larger batches and because I don't have to separate oil from water. But for smaller batches and for testing the effects of new strains, my moka pot is going to get a lot of use.
