Arizer Solo

Hey now,
Whether I'm 'travelling' or not, I use the travel tubes from planetvape for all my straight solo stems. I store my planetvape Gongs in them too. Unfortunately they are sold out at the moment so I think I'm going to look at some cigar cases. I'll take stem with an end cap with me for sizing. Maybe a three pack...
AVB out

All that is a good idea but I use the bent stem, I don't seem to like the straight one as much. Those would work fine for the straight stem but what about the bent stem? Does anyone have any idea on how I can carry that in my pocket safely without breaking it?

I'm thinking of doing this. I broke my straight stem and the replacement has really small holes. How did you Punch out the glass plate without breaking the stem?

I used that pokey tool after using the stem while it was a little hot & hit it a few times & it broke very easily....You just need a small tool like that & you'll be fine. Just make sure to run it under hot water for 10 minutes make sure there's no left over glass pieces, torch it a bit with a jet lighter & your good to go.

Could you point me to any info on how to use this stuff for cleaning stems? I'm in CO so finding it locally should be easy. I just did a heavy cream stem clean in the hopes of getting some nice "gourmet" creamer for my coffee. But while I was very pleased at how clean it got my stem, I was underwhelmed by the effect and a little put off by the taste, of the resulting creamer so I'm looking for alternatives. Thanks.

I use hard glasses cases, for instance this one (I think):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005GKF7MA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I put a piece of cloth (or foam) in with it to keep it from rattling around, but being as it's steel you could no doubt stand on it without hurting the stem inside. And the rounded corners make it convenient to put in your pocket. You can also get a 'doob tube' of bud in with it.......

For travel, the plastic caps from olive oil cans make a snug fit for your packed Solo stem. Snug enough to snap the top off, so ons and offs take extra care.
Also, 1/8" of hookah tubing slides right over one side of a MFLB glass tube, and right into the Solo stem for some extra cooling path on the road. When I am done, I flip the MFLB stem, push it into the bent stem, where it rests safely, and it then goes into my sunglass sock, wrapped up, into the camera lens pouch with the Solo, and we are ready to pedal away.
At the nexus of medicinal, recreational, spiritual, and surreal, from the make-do state, where if it aint broke we dont fix it. 10 miles in three directions from me, people are blazing dirtweed through metal pipes, so words cant express how helpful, and how much I appreciate this life enhancing community.

I have thought about that before too but I was looking for something a bit more portable. The hard sun glasses case would be a little bulky to walk around with in my pocket. Love the idea with the doob tube though . This idea would be more good for those backpack days but I was looking for something that doesn't add much to the bulk. Like those tubes for the straight stems are perfect, I wish they had something like that for the curved ones too.

Your call, of course, but in my pocket it rides a LOT better than the straight one in a 'travel tube'. If you don't want mechanical protection you can just cap it and be done, of course. But you can't get much thinner than the 'correct' size glasses case nor is there any extra room side to side or front to back inside. It's about as small as a case can be and still cover it I think. IMO it's serendipity that the angle lets you slip a doob tube in the 'wasted space' in the bend.

Good luck in your quest.

I saw a video featuring the solo with a new black glass stem. It hasn't been released yet. Don't know if it will come exclusively from vapefiend. The stem looks like shiny black plastic, so it looks more like a walkie talkie or handheld radio antenna.

DC Glass was selling black glass Solo stems, but they are no longer listed. I saved the link, but never got around to ordering one. IIRC, they were about $15. If you're interested, you could try contacting them. I'd also be interested to know if they're still available.

Edit: just saw this on their front page - "DC Glass is bringing our line of new jet black Arizer Solo stems to a store near you!" - I wonder if they are only selling to Arizer now...or some other distributor.

Hi everyone, my first post on this thread!!

My Solo arrived today!! Well Monday actually, but the courier left it with the neighbour as no-one answered the door (there were three of us in!), so I didn't get it until earlier.

Great service from @PlanetVape. I ordered it on Wednesday, so Canada to the UK in 4 business days. Great value as well, even with the expedited international shipping it was £20 cheaper than buying from here – highly recommended.

Back to the Solo... I've never vaped before & I'm eager to get started, please could someone confirm if the below is the correct 'out-of-the-box' routine:

1) charge until the green light is solid then leave it charging for another 4 hours (should be approx. 8 hours in total)
2) turn on to 7 for a full 12 min cycle
3) allow to cool for (how long?) mins, then give it another 12min cycle on 7
4) allow to cool for (how long?) mins, then give it another 12min cycle on 7
5) allow to cool for (how long?) mins then use

A few more questions as well:

1) The first use instructions about the stem: should I do that when I'm doing the first round of the burn cycles, or when I'm going to use it for the first time after I've done the burn off cycles?

2) Do I need to wash the stems before the first use?

3) How charged should I keep it? In the Air thread, I saw people say not to fully charge or discharge the battery. Is it the same with the Solo? If so, would keeping it between 20% & 80% charged be okay?

4) I have the latest Solo that can be used while charging. Should I try to avoid that when possible, or doesn't it matter either way? What's best for the battery in the long-term?

5) Screens: Is there an accepted best method, or is it just personal preference?
i.e.
a) None
b) 1 at the end with the holes so I don't get a mouthful of bud
c) 1 at the end with the holes + 1 at the unit end to stop bud falling into the heating element

6) Are the screens I bought with the vape safe to use as purchased? (I assume they are, but back in the day when I used to make home-made gauzes out of the d.i.y. shop, I used to have to hold a flame to them first to burn off the chemicals they were treated with. Pretty sure that wont b the case here but thought I'd ask!)

7) I'm told it should be a medium grind. I have a medium 4-piece space case. I usually turn it upside down to get the bud nice & fine when I'm combusting. To get a medium grind, I take it I should just grind it the right way up?

8) What heat setting should I use as a starting point as I experiment? 3 or 4?

9) If I fill the chamber, take a couple of hits, then decide I don't feel like vaping the whole thing, can I just pull out the stem, leave it half an hour, then pop it back in & start again with the same bud?

10) How do I know when the bud is 'done'? Is it obvious, taste & colour-wise?

11) I've not done any research on it yet, but I think I've seen people mention that you can save vaped bud for edibles. Is that correct, & if so, how much do you need to save up?

Sorry I've asked so many questions, but I tend to overthink things!!

Thanks

I'll give it a shot......

The 1st 5......as soon as the solo shuts off you can fire it back up......

#1- i assume you mean inserting the stem to make sure it fits....you can do it during the burn in
#2-i didnt,but i guess it wouldnt hurt...
#3-charge until all the yellow lights are lit but unplug before the green stops blinking and you can use it until the 1st yellow goes out....
#4-From what i understand you should avoid using while plugged in alot.....its ok to do it just not excessively.....
#5-personal preference....i dont use screens unless i have some shake or if i grinded too fine....
#6-you can use the screens but it wouldnt hurt to flame or iso them....
#7-i don have a space case but that sounds right to me.....
#8-again thats personal preference.....#3 or 4 is a good place to start.....although im a high temp man myself.....love #5 and #6 dry or wet....
#9-You will have to experiment with that.....in theory,yes......i tried it but didnt like it......
#10-With experience it will be obvious through taste and color.....my avb is tobacco colored but some people vape until its much darker.....
#11-Another one i cant really answer but i have about 40-50 grams of avb but havent figured out what to do with it yet.....

Phew....i hope i helped....

When I figure out how to quote and post photos,, I will certainly post my travel set up. A Lowepro camera lens bag just big enough to fit a Solo (wtapped in freezer weight baggie for inclement weather protection), a bent capped stem, with MFLB extender, wrapped in sunglass sock,, one plastic container cylinder the size you could stack quarters in, containg ground herbs, with a bit of guitar string, vapir ear pick, and leatherman micra, all with little pouches to slide into. Oh, and a glass lens sock just big enough to cover the bottom of the Solo when I hit it hamster style in the rain or snow. Slides right in my pack, next to my warm beverage and cherry tart. Ready to roll.

Status report: the green LED took 1 & a half hours of charging until it went solid. Just under 4 hours to go now!!

That's really helpful @ctxgooner, thanks for taking the time to answer all that. It's very much appreciated!!

A couple of follow up questions though lol...

re. #3, does “the 1st yellow goes out” refer to:
a) the bottom LED going out (temp. setting 1)?
or
b) the first yellow LED to go out, i.e. the top LED (temp. setting 7)?

re. #8 (heat settings): From all my reading, the vast majority seem to set it between 2-6. Is it ok to go go all the way up to 7, or is that too high? Similarly, is 1 too low? Also, would I be right in saying the higher temperature settings are better to help sleeping? (something to do with the cannabinoids, I think, but I need to read more)

Finally, a stupid question: in #8 when you say 'wet', how wet do you mean? Straight off the plant & not been dried at all? Or dried but not been totally cured? At the moment the humidity in my jar is 60%, so still in the curing process...

Heat level 1 would be too low. Many folks enjoy the lower temps like heat level 2 and 3. My fav is heat level 4 on the regular stock stem and at the end I bump the temp to 5.

Lately I've been using the Vortex stem and I use heat level 5 then bump up to 6 at the end of my session. The Vortex stem allows you to go higher temperature wise with no feeling of harshness or the stem feeling too hot. The higher temps help with pain and sleep.

The Vortex stem is one inch longer than the stock straight stem and is made from thicker glass. The extended air path helps to cool the vapor.

@leaf of faith Have fun and enjoy your new toy.

#1 yellow=heat level #1
#8-I personally have never used levels 1 or 2 and the only time i use #3 is when i get some new bud and i really want to sample the flavor......

As far as #7 goes and to also answer your other question.....wet means to use your solo through a water pipe.....thats when i use level 7...... and yes from what i understand higher temps=more cbd=good for before bed temps

Edit- @CarolKing beat me to it

Thanks @CarolKing & @ctxgooner :)

Ahhh, 'wet' means a water pipe! That makes more sense, I thought it sounded a bit strange to vape wet bud. Told you it was a stupid question

Which is better when vaping at higher temperatures, a water pipe or a vortex stem?

I have a couple more charging/power questions as well...

If I stop charging when all the yellow LEDs are lit (as per @ctxgooner's guidelines), approximately how many minutes of use will I get before the last yellow LED goes out & I need to charge again? +, how long will it take to charge back up so all the yellow LEDs are lit again?

Should I be pretty disciplined about sticking to these guidelines? i.e. do I have to wait until the 1st yellow goes out, or can I charge it before then? +, can I stop charging it before it reaches the point where all the yellow LEDs are lit? I want to follow all the advice to look after the battery, but I'm trying to work out my battle plan in the event that the battery is low & I dont have time for a full charge...

@leaf of faith A brand new Solo should get almost 2 hours of use depending on how high of temps you go, before you drain the battery. Don't drain the battery though. I was getting almost 2 hours of battery on temps 4 and 5.

if you decide to vaporize with water you would need to get an adapter, GonG (glass) or WonG (wood) either 18 or 14mm depending on the water tool you are using. GonGs are through Planetvape and you can get a WonG from @Ed's TnT. The D020 bubbler through Dhgate works well with the Solo. It takes an 18mm adapter.

You don't need to do anything right away. Just enjoy the Solo the way it is.
Some folks grind their herb and some use little nuggets. I grind mine to a medium consistency.

It looks like you have a lot of research.

You can re-charge before the last yellow goes out.....i dont know how much time it would take for the solo to shut off completely after the light goes out......i believe @OF says youve got one more session before the battery dies but ive never tested that theory.....same thing when charging it up....i sometimes will just charge it up to level 5 or 6 and i start using it....i believe the main point is to not use up all of the battery and not to over-charge after the initial over-charge.....although i have woken up once or twice and looked over and seen my green light not flashing and im like oh shit!!! But even thats not a big deal as long as you arent over-charging regularly......

@CarolKing Yep, but it will be fun doing it! :D

I actually looked at bubblers when I was doing my research on which vape to buy, but I figured I should start off vaping without & then buy one at a later date. I'll probably look into sooner than I expected though as I medicate at night to help me sleep so will be vaping at high temps.

You would recommend a bubbler over a vortex stem then?

Thanks @ctxgooner, that's good to know. As long as there's some flexibility I'm sure I''ll be able to get my timings right.

Status report: The initial charge is complete, time for the burn-off cycles :brow:

Hmm, the burn cycles are going fine but there's a slight setback. The bent stem has a small chip in it :(. I'm going to email them but I imagine the cost of sending it back to Canada will mean its cheaper to just buy a new one.

The straight stem is fine though so it's not the end of the world

@leaf of faith It's your call about either the bubbler or the Vortex stem. Just the Vortex stem would be about $25. A bubbler plus a GonG would cost more. I say eventually get both.

Some folks like wood so a WonG would be a little more than $25. I have a 3 inch WonG that I can use for either a mouthpiece or a WonG @Ed's TnT does excellent work. I had a WonG made with a turquoise inlay.

@CarolKing I'll look into them. I'm leaning towards the bubbler though, don't know why. Ty

I just checked Planet Vape's returns policy & I wont be emailing them after all. Seems I should have opened it & checked everything quicker  I'll just order a new one if (when!) I get a bubbler

Question regarding the heating process:

I went through the burn cycles last night. At temp. setting 7, it takes 1 min 30 secs for all the yellow LEDs to light up, & then the red heating LED will stop flashing on & off continuously. However, for the rest of the 12 min cycle, the red heating LED will flash every now & then. Sometimes 1 flash, sometimes 5, sometimes it will flicker on & off. Sometimes it will do it every 5 seconds, sometimes every 30. There doesn't seem to be a pattern. It never reaches the point where the red LED goes without flashing for more than 30 seconds

I tested it again this morning on setting 7, & its still doing the above. If the unit starts from cold, it takes about 9 mins to reach the point where the red LED flashes only once every 30 seconds. If I start a new cycle immediately after, it takes about 7 mins.

I then tried it at different temperature settings: (with a 10 min cool down in between)

at setting 4, it takes about 45secs for the 4 yellow LEDs to light up, & a further 2 mins (approx.) until the red LED completely stops flashing (about 2 mins 45 secs in total)

at setting 5, it takes about 55 secs for the 5 yellow LEDs to light up, & a further 2 mins 10 secs (approx.) until the red LED completely stops flashing ( about 3 mins 5 secs in total)

at setting 6, it takes about 1 min 5 secs for the 6 yellow LEDs to light up, & a further 2 mins 45 secs until the red LED completely stops flashing (about 3 mins 50 secs in total)

As this is my first vape I have no previous experience; is this normal?

(In the above scenarios, I tried it with & without the stem inserted, & it happened with both. When heating without the stem, I undid the plastic cap that protects the heating chamber & moved to the side, exposing the chamber.)

Yes, perfectly normal.

Same as your home heater runs longer to heat up a cold house than the same house started warmer or heated to a lower temperature. After that the heater has to come on from time to time to make up the heat lost. Try blowing into the empty cup, you'll see the heating action pick up to compensate.

If you ever get around to actually using this guy you'll find the same thing often happens when hitting it, that is take a hit and the heater starts up for a bit.

It's just fine, get to enjoying it.......

Yes, what you are seeing is normal operation.

When you first turn the unit on, the heating LED will flash to indicate that the chamber is heating up to the desired temp setting. Once that setting is reached, the heating LED will go out and will remain out until the temperature in the chamber drops below the temp setting. At that point, it will start flashing again to heat the chamber back up to the desired setting.

The heating LED will cycle on and off as it strives to maintain the desired temp setting in the chamber.
