Never combusted in my Firefly, just blackened. I use an Iolite Wispr screen. Purchased 7/4/14. Original two batteries still working as they should. Mine is on the cooler side, I think, and the screen adds extra heat for me. When I use the FF, I stick in a whole nugget that fills it. Then I proceed to break it up later in the game.

For myself when it comes to my FF i'd rather it run a little more on the hotter side.I can now sense when im getting too close to combustion, and can ease up.I'm getting HUGE hits..truly unbelievable pulls. There is definitely a fine line to a great pull and a mouth full of ass.I'm going to keep running it till she quits or totally malfunctions.Right now I couldn't be happier.

Besides my mouthpiece being slanted to one side it performs perfectly. I was gonna send it in to be fixed or replaced but I figured it's working properly that I know of and isn't letting vapor escape so besides aesthetics it's fine so decided to keep. And yes it is real because firefly verified the serial and it was authentic, guess it was just my luck I get a mouth piece that's slanted like the fake ones lol

Interesting. I guess we do have a confirmed case. :p It still seems really unlikely to me that anything can really migrate from the steel plate onto the coil...perhaps there's a tiny o-ring gap?

Sorry but I don't think mine is a "confirmed case". Two separate events. None of the combustion I experienced was preceded by an observable "spark" from the coil (not that I could see). And when I did see a "spark" it did not lead to combustion.

Also the "spark" may have been caused by particles entering the heating chamber from the outside, through the grills. It may not have been caused by particles entering the heating chamber from the bowl. I really can't be sure.

Also, regarding the theory that heating the coil for a period of time before inhaling will prevent combustion, I would have to disagree. I used to press the button for a "10 count" before inhaling, and that was when I experienced combustion (still on the first draw, immediately after starting to draw).

@StonedPerk - As others have stated, real combustion in the Firefly is unmistakable. It has nothing to do with the size of the clouds. When you see flame and can recover a burnt cherry from your bowl you know it's combustion.

I'm not sure we're any closer to discovering the cause of combustion in the Firefly :(

I know exactly what caused it in both of my combusting FFs...coil alignment problems. What is behind some of these other cases seems more elusive. I'm still skeptical of the debris->coil theory.

I've had my Firefly since week 1 but my second battery was goosed so I moved on to another vape for a bit. After then losing my FF battery, had no choice but to order two new ones(backups are a must around here) so I jumped on the special they are running. I scooped up the $40 external charger and battery bundle special, and the new batts are thankfully the new version or whatever. They're working overtime and seem to be completely on point for performance.

Well, I should be happy that I waited so long to spend money on extra batteries and charger....

MY FIREFLY DIED!!!!!! What is life?!?!?

And Just before we leave for a weekend in the islands.... oh the humanity!

Ahem, anyway, so it seems the heating element went bad - no glow or heat in bowl, but the battery is charged and the LED blinks as a hold the button.

Anyone have experience with getting Firefly to service a second-hand unit?
I don't mind paying for a repair if that's what it takes.

Oh man I hope this process doesn't take very long......

Wow, Firefly's support is fantastic! I received a phone call within 20 minutes. it may take 7-10 days to get the unit back, but that's understandable. No I just hope I can handle choking on the vapormax for more than a week. It's so easy to get spoiled by Firefly's taste and smoothness

So.. just curious about these coil alignment issues, can someone elaborate on what a misaligned coil is?

I assume its the position of the coil in relation to the ceramic chamber, but what exactly is a properly aligned coil?

Would it be best to have it placed exactly centered, so it doesnt touch any side of the ceramic chamber?
Would it be better to press it all the way down so it touches the bottom? Or the top?

Or would it be better to have it touch all the sides?

lol

Just curious, I re-centered my coil so it no longer touches any sides, and slightly pressed down,

Marctraider,
Alright so i did the following:

Re-align coil so it pretty much touches the bottom and outer sides of the ceramic chamber, as far away from the ceramic holes that transfer the air to the oven, so the temperature is as low as possible when it hits the oven.

Furthermore im going to experiment with 2 screens rather than 1. Doenst really decrease chamber side noticable, and i did notice that my herbs/tobacco et cetera color more equally now, where before the bottom part always used to be close to black after a few draws.

I have a good feeling this will eliminate any combustion happening.

The draw resistance has increased very slightly because of the screen, but it still vapes well :)

Glad you got such a fast response. Yeah, dead coil...it happens. Twice to me so far. I can't say I'm not just waiting for it to re-occur....anytime I don't see the glow immediately I start to worry! But the service is great, you'll be enjoying a new FF in no time I'm sure.

,

Since it isn't designed to be user-adjustable (hence the whole "voided warranty" state when you open the top plate) there's never been any published specs about the exact right positioning of the coil. I gather that not all coils work to spec in the exact same position, and that they do temperature testing to ensure it's in the optimal position. I would think touching the ceramic side is a bad thing, but then again, perhaps for some units, that's exactly where it should be.

BTW you not only are risking a voided warranty by moving the coil around, you're also in danger of having that fucker just snap right off on you...it's happened to a couple of other users (pages and pages back). The wire that connects the coil to the circuit board is quite stiff, but it also apparently can only suffer so much stress before breaking. And then for sure your FF will be running too cool.:p

That sounds out of the norm to me, as myself and others have remarked in this thread about how cool the ff's vapor feels to the mouth. Have you tried adjusting your draw speed, or heater button timing?

My wife and I have been enjoying the firefly for a long time now, but we have encountered a problem.

With our first firefly, which we purchased relatively early on, we gradually noticed a diminishing of battery life, to the point where we were getting far less than 20 hits per battery cycle. Additionally, the red light started coming on when the battery wasn't actually discharged, making things worse. It became pretty bad so we sent the unit in, along with both batteries and the charger.

The good folks at Firefly immediately sent us new versions of each item. That was a few weeks ago. The new unit seemed dramatically better, and we were stoked. Now, however, the battery cycles are getting shorter and it feels like we are falling into the same pattern.

We both love how smooth this vaporizer hits, and how easy it is to medicate with it. However, we are afraid that this battery issue could be a dealbreaker that switches us over to the more expensive Storz & Bickels portable. We can't really afford that, but life is too short to be dealing with annoying shit like this, right?

Anyway, has anybody else encountered similar issues?

Thanks

In that case it might be interesting for people to get some sort of temperature reader, would be cool if you could somehow tweak the coil for supreme finetuning :p

Assuming you even know what to aim for. But you can definately calibrate it better that way.

Here's a post with a pic of the new batteries. If yours look like this, they are the new ones and should have longer life. If they look different and are rated 750 instead of 770, they are the older stock, and if you got them recently they are probably from the batch that many of us have had problems with. Thankfully EDA saved me the trouble of taking a picture.

I just got a couple of the new ones, and have only used one so far, but it performed much much better...probably twice what the old ones put out. Have to do more testing though.

See if FF will replace your battery, assuming you are stuck with an old one.

Thank you for the battery info. However, I can tell you that we double-checked and the new batteries are indeed the new kind. They look a little different than the old ones as well (the area around the contacts is now grey on both the charger and the batteries), in addition to the different number. Maybe they won't follow the same exact pattern. Here's hoping.

I emailed F.F. days ago, my new (old style) battery (about three months old) has started to malfunction with only maybe twenty charge cycles on it. Fully charged it works for thirty seconds then dead, no red light low battery indicator, just dead. They have not emailed me back. I have emailed in the past and it has only taken a couple days to get a response. I am on day 5 now. I think I will email them again monday if I don't receive a response by then? I have never had an issue with this company before.

I've actually had my ff get hotter with time. Sorry to hear about your problem. You might also look at the Zion.I think its going to be ready in a little bit.Not sure though. And it will be over half the cost.Pretty cool design. And its suppoosed to be a heat on demand type instead of a session vape like the crafty and mighty.Good luck with which ever you decide.

A question on battery usage, should I let the battery fully discharge before recharge or can I keep it charging. The reason I ask is that I can get a full nights entertainment from one bowl (I know....lightweight). So on the following night I tend to recharge before fun time. Will this cycle of charging a half used battery be detrimental to my battery's life?. Apologies if this has been answered before.

I have always had great service provided by the LiveChat. Might want to try that on Monday. :2c:

I just got a firefly vape and the strange thing I've noticed is that when the unit is fully charged, turned off and unplugged the led light is constantly blinking. It's faint and kind of hard to see but it's definitely blinking (pretty quickly too). Has anyone else noticed this? I'm wondering if this blinking could also be why my battery dies so quickly.

I tried googling the problem but didn't fine anything other than the normal low battery blinking (which this is not, it's much faster and very faint like I said)

edit: and looking at a page back I'm kind of annoyed that I got an older 750mah batter instead of the newer one. I only got it a week ago which sucks, and the person/shop I got it from is legit. But I guess they don't sell too many of them and had old ones in stock...

SmokeyTehBear,
Well i got mine some 5 weeks ago, i just checked and i got the 770mah version (yay!)

from Azarius

Battery life/charge time is as advertised.

Other than the increased cap, is the bat really of better quality?
