Kidney Disease and Cannabis

I was just diagnosed with kidney disease, and was wondering if anyone else has been in this situation, or know someone who was or still is?

I have to be careful what I put into my body, medications, food, etc. Alcohol is really bad for me now too, so I can't have tincture anymore, unless it were a glycerin tincture.

I can't discuss this with my GP, and was wondering if vaporizing cannabis could be harmful to me. I need cannabis now more than ever because I can't take any OTC pain meds at all anymore.

I'm sorry about your diagnosis.

FWIW, my brother's doctors suggested cannabis might help his appetite while his first transplanted liver was failing and taking his kidneys out with it. They didn't seem concerned about cannabis' effect on his kidneys

Vicki, I am sorry to hear this as well!

I've never read cannabis was bad for the kidneys. Synthetic cannabis, I recall reading, did impact kidneys... but don't have any sources to site handy. Maybe another can chime in?

My best wishes to you!

@Vicki I get problems with my kidneys when using anti inflammatories. When I'm on them I have stage 3 kidney disease when I'm off of them I have no problems. I was told because of all the years of being on Ibuprofen weakened my kidneys. There are several medications that I cannot take. So therefore I take cannabis for what ails me.

I have never heard anywhere that cannabis is bad for your kidneys. It may not be good to smoke it.

Oh wow! So, you can't ever take drugs like that ever again? What about Tylenol? I'm not even allowed to take that anymore. She said Tylenol is just as bad as the NSAIDS for someone like me. I have to limit my protein intake to less than 40 grams per day now too. No more soda, and cutting back on caffeine.

Go for organic

I plan to because I know GMO's are bad for me as well. Except that there are GMO's in just about everything now, so it's hard to always know what you are eating.

I can take Tylenol, but that isn't good for your liver. All that stuff has side affects of one thing or another. I'm pissed because this is what they told me to take for years, I was following Drs. orders. I don't take Tylenol because it doesn't even help the pain and inflammation enough to risk the side effects.

Cannabis is my medicine.

EDIT
I bought a cannabis tincture at a mmj market for pain and inflammation. I just started trying it out. I'm hoping it works. I've been trying out some high CBD strains.

Thank you for all the kind words. :)

I'm keeping a positive attitude, and being very strict about recording everything that I eat and put into my body. Eating out will be more difficult, but still doable. I go back for more blood tests in 6 weeks, and hopefully my GFR has improved.

**I'm not allowed to have any alcohol, so tinctures are out of the question for me.

Vicki, Sorry to hear that news.
FWIW, when I consume cannabis: vaping, eating or tinctures, it makes me piss - a lot. I had assumed I'm unusual in this regard. But somewhere recently I read that cannabis is, or can be a diuretic. If it acts as a diuretic on you it's something you should figure into the equation. I don't know if it would be a negative, it could even be positive. It could make your kidneys work a little harder - or it could flush things out.

I'll try to dig up some more information. All the best to you.

They make glycerine tinctures, which are non-alcoholic

Oh, I know, but I don't live in a MMJ state, so I would have to make my own, and I'm not well enough to do it.

Thank you. :)

I've never had that reaction to cannabis, but I do have chronic UTI's which make me pee all the time. Or, at least they make me feel like I need to pee all the time. I have a kidney infection right now, and am taking Macrobid. After that, I start Doxycycline. I'm on so many meds I have to keep a daily log of doses and times. :disgust:

@Vicki - something I do to all-but-completely eliminate the alcohol from my GD tinctures is to reduce them via evaporation to the max until basically just beautiful sticky RSO. I am then able to ingest the oil by first mixing each dose (grain of rice size) with a teaspoonful of the best coconut oil I can find. Taste is perfectly fine to me, and the effect is as good as full alcohol tinc (effect may even lasts a bit longer due to the enhanced bio-availability thanks to the coconut oil) . I have kidney & bladder issues also, but they have not become at all progressively worse over the long period of time that I have used this method. Feel better Vicki!

EDIT: I must add in all fairness that I do imbibe in alcohol now & then, in addition to my tincs, so it could very well be that my conditions differ from yours in regards to extent and malady.

First of all stress is bad for your kidneys.

I'm not fortunate enough to grow my own cannabis but if I was - you can put the green leaves of your plant directly in your vegi/fruit smoothies and blend it up. It won't get you medicated but the green leaves are suppose to be good for your insides.

These fruits and vegetables are good for your kidneys - cilantro, parsley, watercress, fennel, cranberries, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, cherries, cabbage and garlic.

Drink lots of water during the day.

Take a nice soothing bath using 1 cup of Epsom salt and 1 cup of Baking Soda if you want you can add a little essential oils. The magnesium sulfate in the Epsom Salt pulls out the toxins, plus a bath makes you feel better.

@Snappo

That sounds like a great method. I'm just afraid to ingest any alcohol at this point. I am reading every label of everything I buy, making sure it doesn't contain anything I can't have now. What's your GFR? Mine is 57. :(

I don't grow either. I wish I could try a smoothie like that, though! I will give the other ingredients a try, though, thank you! :)

Regarding the stress, I guess I'm screwed then. In all seriousness, I know you are right, but our house is always hectic and loud during the day. Although, my husband and daughter are making things less stressful for me.

Sorry to here about CKD. Is it genetic, does it run in your family? If you ever had to get on immunospuuressive drugs it might interfere.

You should look into TetraLab oral caps, it should not be toxic to kidneys. im obviously no doc. im sure your nephrologists, will obviously tell you to stay away from MJ but ask for a scientific reason why.

GoldCaps softgels contain only ultra-pure natural cannabinoids and grape seed oil. You can see there's no powdered marijuana, hashish, kif or hash oil — no molds, pesticides, solvents, bacteria, toxins or other contaminants. That's why GoldCaps are safe even for patients with suppressed immune systems.

I'm not telling my doctor's I use cannabis because I live in a NON-MMJ state. I don't believe it's hurting me, so I don't plan to stop. Thank you for the glycerin tincture recipe!

I've never heard of anyone in my family having kidney disease, but it's possible, I suppose. I think it is more due to years of taking medications, including pain meds.

Well, my GP called today to tell me my eGFR dropped to 44. :(
I'm sorry to read that Vicki :(

Saw my GP this morning, and went over the blood work. Being that it was slightly worse, she was not happy. The stress caused by the accident isn't helping. She added a new med, and changed some dosages. Now I have to get blood and urine tests every 2 months now. (not for drug tests, kidney function) :(
