The quest for a USB charger continues. Or maybe I should say 'charges ahead'.....no, best not go there.

As I said before, I've ordered two possible 'mail order' cables in the hopes of finding something simple/cheap folks could use. I just got the first one:

Six bucks shipped from New York First Class, got to the other coast to me Monday for an order the Thursday before. Six bucks shipped, mostly shipping. Ten bucks for two.

However, as expected, it doesn't work with Air as it's too short. It will work OK for Solo if you feed it 12 VDC instead of the five from the normal USB port. You can see it here (I bought two for just this reason....):


That's the factory charger connector for Air at top. Under it is the cable as shipped. Notice it's too short to the shoulder. Under that is the second cable modified. I marked the correct length with tape then used a utility knife to slice straight through the rubber to the metal core then 'walked' it around using the tape as a guide removing the 'rubber doughnut' at the right. It now works just fine. It's charging at a typical 800 mA, what it would from the factory 1200 mA charger (where all the capacity isn't used), but this is an abnormally hot USB port, normally the port (especially if it's a lap top) will limit the current to a lower value and slow the charging (but it will basically get to the exact same charge, just slower).

Couple that with a 'USB charging port auto cigarette converter gismo' (sorry for the technical terms.....) and you have the car use all tied up.

Another one coming, I doubt it's long enough either. Will advise.

One word of caution, there are 3 standards of pin diameters in this body size, no telling which this is, but it seems a solid enough mate to me. At this point I recommend it to interested guys with six bucks, a sharp knife or razor blade and a steady hand.

I received my DIY USB cable today. A few seconds with a razor knife and I have a working USB charge cable.
Tested it out with a generic USB battery rated @ 800mA, charged fine.
This and the spare battery I have on the way will fit my needs.

There are a lot of different 'USB power testers' out there, this one is special. Notice the lower left display? That's showing "integrated charge", that is it's totaling up the current second by second as your battery charges. There are 10 memories, controlled by the button, in addition to the normal voltage and current displays.

In use, you zero the counter by shifting to the next memory. A complete charge for Air is about 2000mAh (2Ah), each session uses a bit less than 500mAh. I typically use this to determine what's going on. For instance I just ran the battery flat in another test, by watching the meter count I knew when I had charged about 700mAh I had enough for another session before further recharge.

You can also, with some experience, get a handle on the charge level since the current draw slowly rises (as the battery voltage comes up it takes more power to add each mA at that higher voltage). In my case it starts out 'high 700s', climbs to about 840mA ("0.84" displayed) before it starts tapering off (current wise) at the end of charge.

And, most important for some of us, it's yet another toy to play with the Air (and any other USB powered stuff).

Hey guys, vaporizer newbie here. Just purchased my first one, the Arizer Air of course. I just got it in today and I noticed that the unit at the top around the oven part gets too hot to touch when vaping. I just wanted to ask you guys if that's normal and expected or not?

Yes of course life has lots of risks, sure. Using a car was one example given. However the use of a car is pretty much mandatory for life, whereas not wanting to wait 2 hours to charge your batteries is not.
Again, your choice. Just seems odd you all are such sticklers for rules unless they are inconvenient for you.

I'm certainly trying the simple DIY method for usb convenience, but i bought this for my truck. Successful thus far in Charging mflb batts, next is the air.
12.55 shipped - took 36 hrs or so

It was 13 days from when I shipped it off to when I got it back. I was told if they can't fix it in 2 days they send a new one. I'm in southern California and it's about 4-7 days to ship there ($ out of my pocket) and they express-mailed it back for free (they 'waived' a $15 return shipping fee but I'm guessing they do that a lot for warranty claims)

Sorry to hear it happened to you too. I bought a MFLB because I had no other portable so I got to play with that while I waited. Now that I got it back with some freebies I'm a happy camper.

edit: plus a couple days of exchanging emails for required info. To save you time, they need name, phone number, shipping address, and serial number to process the warranty claim.

So been on vape planet website and noticed they had the newest version of the air with a battery indicator. I bought mine from puff it up last week for 170 that doesnt have the battery indicator. I thought i was going to get the latest version for this yr. My question is, is that the only software update they made to the new one? If so i can live without the newest version. I do love my air it feels really well built and hits really good.

Been using an Imag Plus as a heater, 1/4" stem from a Eterra Tulip matches nicely.

Smaller, lighter, and the carbon fiber body is special ops quality.

I wanted discrete. :peace:

Really, I didn't know there was a new version with a battery indicator. How do I know if I got the new version or not? Does it physically look any different from the old version (additional lights?)

Put a sleeve on it, and you'll be able to touch the top oven grill. Without the sleeve, especially if you go above the green light, it does get a little too hot after prolonged use. I like to hold the AA like a fat stogie, so I often am touching the top grill, and noticed it is a lot easier to manage with the sleeve on.

When you turn it on, as it beeps it flashes a white light, right after that it'll flash green really quick for full battery. I bought mine from puffitup and it has the battery indicator.
I doubt there was any other software changes I suggest not worrying about the "latest model" and simply enjoy.

This looks pretty good, but one thing I noticed, it says the USB output is at 5V, but isn't the max input on the battery 4.2V? I don't know much about battery chargers regarding the AA, maybe you can shed some light on it. BTW, what are your thoughts on the Intellicharger D2 or D4? I am thinking of buying it because it has the digital readout where it lets you know the charge percentage and what power level your battery is at.

Yea yours is the new software update, were mine shows a light blue light then the blue light comes on. I would of posted a picture of it but i dont know how to post a pictures i took on my phone. It askes for the url to post, im new to fc.So not sure why i recieved a older one, but anyways still happy with my air! I just have to remember how many times i use it, only last me four to five ten minute sessions. I have extra batteries ordered. Like i said very happy with my air.

I see, I also have the old version that flashes light blue. Although I would like to have the new software update, this "older" AA still lets you know when the battery is dwindling (it will briefly flash a red light when you turn it on to signal it's weak, then solid red when it's dead).

That is the battery indicator I am talking about. When it's full and you turn it on, it flashes blue/white then it goes off and then it'll show a colored light real quick. Then go idle

Good question, and right on both counts. Inside Air is a charging controller that reduces the current to a controlled level (a bit under one Amp) until the battery charge gets close to that 4.2 Volts, when it limits the current supplied to still stay under that voltage. When that current gets too small (typically under 10% of the 'full blast' level), charging stops.

So the 5 Volts gets reduced to the needed level. Just like it is when the factory charger (also 5 Volts) is used. In a similar manner, the 12 Volts supplied to Solo is reduced to about 8 Volts to charge the two 18650s used there.
