Discontinued The Herbalizer

My Herbie is home!!! I am so glad it's back!

I just did a short session, and had to stop after about 4 hits. I can tell a huge difference. Now I am getting a TON of vapor, and very thick clouds, set on 445F. My unit was definitely running a bit cool. It is now confirmed..

I was going to upload a picture, but tinypic is being a bitch. :goon:

Tinypic IS a bitch to deal with. Can I recommend a better free hosting solution? imgur.com I think you will find it much easier to work with.

Thanks Stu!! :)

Hello , I attached a small video where something better the problem with solid valve.

I think I will correct the defect with a plastic grinder to regain originates size ...

and since then buy a volcano of second hand for my valve solidad =)

PLEASE USERS STOP USING SOLID VALVE from S&B NOW!:peace::2c:

Herbie bowl is designed to have a heat funnel made in steel.

If you want to blow bags from your herbie, just grab a bit of high temp silicone tube to correct the seal of the stock bags. a bit of silicone tubing to put big diameters hose if you need.

Or get a few GonG connectors and enjoy hands-free bag filling with no worries about melting your Herbie.

@Fine Grind's post about Herbie bags inspired me to take a few photos of my setup. I really enjoy using Herbie bags with scientific glass too but I've similar troubles with the valves on the Herbie bags leaking and having to hold the bag onto the bowl while it fills.

This felt like a lot of effort to repeat over and over. I also really wanted a good way to use my HT with Herbie. I read about other user's experiments creating a GonG connection for the Herbie bowl and tried a few of my own. I finally found something that worked really well.

I took some SSV whip tubing and cut a 1/4" slice of it off. I ran the slice of tubing under hot water and stretched and forced it over the Herbie bowl.

Then I slid a 18mm to 14mm reducer over the top of the bowl, using the SSV whip slice as a gasket for a tight seal. I just twist the adapter tightly onto the bowl.

18mm-to-14mm-reducer.jpg

Now I have a 18mm male connector attached to the top of both my Herbie bowls and can use GonG connectors for everything. I have an 18mm female whip adapter that fits over the Herbie bowl so I can use it with whip too.

For bags, I use an 18mm female to 14mm female adapter.

18mm-to-14mm-adapter.jpg

Then I take a 14mm whip adapter...

...and pop it right up into the valve of the Herbie bag.

VB-14mm-in-balloon.jpg

I've had no leaking at all with this method during filling. The combined height of the 3 adapters also lifts the bag so it can rest on the opened top of Herbie while it fills.

I never need to mess with the bag as it fills. I just leave the whip adapter in the Herbie bag and pop it into any of my glass I want. I don't have to hold anything and can walk around with the bag firmly attached to my water piece with no vapor leakage.

Next step is figuring out a way to do away with valves altogether and just seal turkey bags to the 14mm whip adapter.

I just have to report back. I feel like I am using my Herbie for the first time! It is so much more powerful than it was before. I just had a session, and I didn't even have to use fan assist! I was blowing huge clouds too, but I did have it set on 445F. I'll definitely be experimenting more.

I'm so glad Herbalizer was able to re-calibrate my Herbie. The difference is night and day, literally!!! It made the 3 week wait worth it. :)

How did you start to notice that your Herbie was off calibration? Was it simply just lighter and ineffective?

In December, I wasn't able to get hardly any vapor at all, set at 445F, with fan assist. It worked in the months leading up to that, but I've always had to use fan assist to get good vapor, and I always had to set it to a high temp. I thought it was just me, though, because I am an ex-smoker, and have lung issues.

I don't know what finally caused it to take a dive in December, but after that, it didn't really work at all. I knew something was wrong when I could get better clouds from my Solo, Iolite, and MFLB.

@lazylightning

Where did you get those connectors?

I put the connectors together from pieces I had lying around and from Oregon Glass Blower who I heard about from other threads on this forum.

Here's a parts list for the GonG Herbie bag filling system:

SSV Whip (only need ¼" section to go around top of Herbie bowl for gasket between bowl and GonG reducer)
Clear Whip Tubing - $5.49

Reducer (female side goes over ¼" whip section over top of Herbie bowl to form tight seal)
18/14mm Glass Reducer Adapter 18m/14F - $12

Dual Female Adapter
18/14 Dual Female Connector - $18

14mm Whip Adapter
14mm Vaporizer to Water Whip Adapter - $12

When you first bought your unit did it perform as well as this recalibrated one? I am now wondering how far off my unit is from a properly calibrated system and whether it could suddenly perform worse. I think mine is working fine since I tested by using a thermapen at 445 and after letting it hover over the hot air output from herbie. It eventually went just above 445 after letting it run through 3 full fan cycles.

Call me anal but for the cost of this vaporizer and for how much they advertise precision control I expect 400 will run at 400 +/- 5 degrees and that 350 would run at 350 etc.. Part of the reason why this is important to me is that I have been taking some basic notes of the strains that I have been using, temp I use them at, type of clouds I get, and how it affects me. I am now a bit concerned that my herbie could "drift" over time. I wish there was a way we could accurately check the calibration on my own. I've tried four different temp sensors (thermapen, maverick bbq thermometer with meat probe, maverick bbq thermometer with air probe, and Fluke DMM with temp probe) and each give results that differ within 20 degrees at the highest temp. I have also tried different measuring points using both the bowl on (top removed) and bowl off as well as touching the metal with the temp probe directly. I am not sure where the best place to measure temp is and what is a good device to use to confirm Herbie calibration.

Does anyone know internally how the herbie determines temperature? My best guess is that the metal cover right at the exhaust where the bowl is put on has a digital temp sensor that is accurate within 1 degree but I am just speculating.

Looking back, I have to say no. As I stated before, I have always had to set my Herbie to a high temp, and use fan assist. The day I received my new Herbalizer was the same day I came home from outpatient surgery, June 30th, 2014. So, I've had my Herbie a little over 6 months.

Now, I can do a whole session without ever using fan assist, and I can set the temperature a lot lower. I am still experimenting too because it really is like I have a whole different vaporizer.

How long have you had your Herbie, and have you ever had problems before?

Vicki, did the Herbalizer people ever tell you what was wrong with it and why some units require recalibration? My Herbie has always functioned perfectly. I would assume it is relatively rare that a Herbalizer would run cold as percision temperature control and fast heat up time has always been a major benifit of the Herbalizer. Anyway, I'm glad your unit is back and you're once again blowing huge Herbie clouds!

Just as an FYI: Every single Herbie is hand-calibrated on its way from assembly to its new home.

That being said, each one should be dialed in and on-point. But there is the "hand" part of "hand-calibrated" which could mean either the calibration itself was off, or the calibration didn't "stick" appropriately.

Ive been on the floor where all of these steps happen. I know how much care is taken. My theory is that it is more of the "it didn't stick", which is the exception...

I've had mine around 6 months and it works great. I'm more concerned that these things can lose calibration like what you described and I want to know how to really know if it lost calibration well before it just quits blowing clouds at 445.

I'm honestly not sure what happened. It works great now, though.

How would that save him money?
Well... U could buy 4 bags for 50 and do this for the rest of your vaping days

Or 110$ on a solid valve, and then 3$ on bags as they are needed

Buying herbalizer bags is an easy way to piss money away (oh and the bags leak and are awful btw)

So... That's how u save money
