Magical Butter

So half way through reading this entire thread :bang: ... i decided fuck it i'll buy machine. So fast forward i get my MB2e and I use it to make Cannabutter. I used an lb of unsalted butter and about an oz of what i think is high grade botanicals (as this company likes to say). I also added a tablespoon of soy lecithin. (yes, i know they changed it to say use sunflower lecithin but this is all i had and i doubt its that big of a difference.)
So I set the temp to 160 and pressed the butter button. OO almost forgot i did decarb ad pregrind the bud before putting it in the machine. The butter came out a lighter shade of green than what i had made using the old method. I had high hopes for it. Sadly, i added it to brownie mix and baked some brownies and they came out... what i thought was subpar, dissappointing. Although some people said it would put them to sleep or would work very well. I would dubb myself as someone with a high tolerance but i felt the butter i had made the first time i cooked the old way was better than this one.

I'm not gunna go ahead and say its because i make some bomb ass butter my way. I did feel i did i good extraction, but it was my first attempt ever !
So fast forward again and i have finally finished reading the entire thread
Somewhere I found that they had a new way of using the mb2e from the facebook group and it was to run it for 1 hour at 220 and then reset it to 160 for 4 hours. (that went for butter AND oil im pretty sure.)
So after reading that, i guess you can say i was excited to see how the new method would work out... then i saw a post saying THAT even was not strong enough. And as again i'd say i have a high tolerance i would guess the same would happen to me.

So from all the reading I've done and just a little trial and error I've decided to try making oil using coconut oil my own new kinda way. I used about 2 cups for an oz of herb. I decarbed, then I ran everything in there for 1 hour at the 220 temp. After the hour was done i reset the machine to 190 for 4 hours. About halfway through the cycle i realized i didnt add any lecithin! so I stopped it and added the lecithin and now clicked the butter option as for 2 more hours. I doubt the different buttons have any difference in their micro-processes other than the time really.. :hmm: anyway i hope. I remember reading somewhere to wait to add the lecithin towards the end of the cycle.. but i only thought about that really to rationalize my mistake .
Anyway... Its cooking rn so i cant really tell you how it came out haha, but check this out. I'm aiming to in a way mimic the method i used when i first made cannabutter. When i first did it i had it simmering around 190 for most of the 5ish hours i was cooking it. (i got a candy thermometer to check the temp.) and towards the end i bumped it up to 200+. But since i had a good amount of water in the mixture i figured it wouldnt really go above, what is it? 212?

To give u an idea of how strong my butter was the first time i would eat one brownie out of a batch of about 12 and feel a nice buzz borderline-high. 2 and an hour and a half later i was absolutely baked.
haha a little much for most people.

So i guess the only thing different im doing right now would be the order at which i bumped the temp up. (now first instead of at the end)

I DO LOVE THIS MACHINE. I JUST WANT TO FIND A WAY TO OPTIMIZE IT!:leaf:

I have had butter a few times from folks that made it using the machine.. and the butter seemed to be good. (they did not use lecithin)
More times I found the Machine butter to be somewhat weaker. When I make butter the way I have for 40+ years I do not use lecithin. I have sold 2 machines and still make butter the old way.
Still... I am considering getting another just to try double runs (2 butter making sessions with one load run twice). It was never any trouble to sell the ones I have tried so far, as the idea is very popular.
Time could be an issue.
Perhaps try a double run.

Looks like I got to purchase one of these. I always wanted to try edibles, but like Vitolo, I want to make ejuice. I never tried potent ejuice and think it will be inconspicuous, like I'm a ecigarette user. Can it get as strong as BHO and other solvent based concentrate?

Vitolo

Vaporist
No... not unless you use actual BHO, and dissolve it using PG compounds and then mix it.
There are threads about this
http://fuckcombustion.com/threads/i-plan-on-preparing-e-juice-with-bho.15455/ is an example.
There are "kits" that are sold with the right substances for this transformation.
There are sites that sell the goods separately like: http://www.liquidizer.com/

The most you will learn about in this thread is making tincture from plant matter...
a much more subtle ejuice style effect.
It requires me about 15 hits to be medicated the way a hit of BHO made product would provide.

Well I have some good news.... The method I used for my Coco oil seemed to work very good. I used a little more than a half of oil per batch and made two batches of brownies and used the rest in a cake and for the frosting. The brownies are just as good, if not better than the brownies I first method using the traditional method. The ratio of thc to brownie should be just about the same with the last batch i made but they are much stronger which shows the extraction process had to be more successful. I didnt want to add any more herb as I wanted to learn what would make the EXTRACTION better not just give it more herb and do the same extraction. The brownies are pretty solid and even heavy smokers get a nice high from it. And the cake is lethal with the accessory of the medicated frosting haha

But anyway, for me, this worked really good. 1 oz to two cups of coco oil, 50 min grinded decarb at 240 degrees in oven, put everything but lecithin in machine for one hour at 220, when done reset, add lecithin and put on 4 hour cycle at 190.

IDK if this actually helped or not but some may wish to do it, i added a small amount of water, less than a half cup, to the mixture before the initial hour as to aid in keeping the oil or weed from burning as the water would vaporize first. Just a thought that sounded helpful :myday:

When i was done the oil was a little dark and the sludge(very little compared to other times of running the machine) looks burnt or just really leeched. I was nervous i may have cooked the potency right out but i now know that wasnt true

I have had butter a few times from folks that made it using the machine.. and the butter seemed to be good. (they did not use lecithin)

Yea i'm basically doing a double run when clicking the 4 hour button for butter. Im actually doing a quad run for the oil haha. And im doing it at a higher temperature. But the general idea of it needing more time to run to be more potent is definitely true.

I'm loving my MB. I just used it to make AVB butter and used that for Snickerdoodles. Effective, and delicious - using vape remains that I've been saving up. Stuff I would have otherwise thrown away...
Blog post at currentlygreen.com

Here's the full text of my blog post, and an Imgur album, if you don't want to visit the blog.
Over time, I have accumulated an ounce of Already Vaped Bud (AVB, also known as ABV, or Already Been Vaped) from my various vaporizers. I've read about people making capsules, sprinkling AVB on pizza, and 'firecrackers' in the past, but I haven't seen too much on baking cookies with it.

I love edibles, I just don't want to be afraid of a quarter of a brownie. I want to be able to eat a cookie or two and get comfortably medicated. So, I actually set out to make a low-dose batch of cookies, using AVB butter, instead of high-potency shake or trim (or even good bud). I finally got 28 grams of AVB saved up and went to work with the Magical Butter Machine. I couldn't be happier with the results.

Two Snickerdoodle cookies is enough to attain a perfect dose for someone with average tolerance. Three of them and you aren't going anywhere but higher for the rest of the day.

I started by weighing out all of my AVB. In my case, I had 28 grams. Most was pretty brown, some was almost black, and a little green was in there from lazy vape sessions.

I softened four sticks of unsalted butter in the microwave. Unsalted is better than salted butter in this case, according to other recipes.

I tossed the semi-melted unsalted butter into the Magical Butter Machine, dumped the 28 grams of AVB in, and added the contents of six sunflower lecithin gel caps. Cutting one end off, then squishing the contents out works fine. The lecithin should have been regular, non-capsule stuff - but this is what I had on hand, and it worked out great. The lecithin helps make the THC more fat-soluble, for increased effect.

Then I hit the 160 degree button and the 2-hour butter button. It did its thing.

Straining the AVB butter is pretty easy with the Magical Butter Machine's included glove and strainer bag. Cleanup wasn't a big deal, even though it might look a little messy. I just tossed the glove and strainer bag on the top rack of my dishwasher, after rinsing it all out.

After leaving the butter in the fridge overnight to harden, then dividing into quarters (sticks), I was all set to make my Snickerdoodles. Why Snickerdoodles? Well, cinnamon is GREAT at cutting that familiar weed taste. And I'm not a big chocolate lover.

I basically followed the instructions on the cookie box. Dump package into bowl. Sliced my 'stick' of AVB butter and briefly softened in microwave, added to bowl. Added 1 egg to bowl. Mixed it up until it was dough, pinched off little bits, and rolled in the cinnamon topping. Baked for 20 minutes at 300f, instead of 10 minutes at 350f. Just to make sure I wouldn't vape any more THC out when baking. I'm honestly not sure if this matters, but why not?

Cookies were done, and I still have 3 more 'sticks' of AVB butter. I had two cookies and went to see a movie with some buddies (using Uber to get there and back, of course). I'd describe it as a very full body and mind high. It didn't make me overly tired or anxious - just a nice, even keel sort of feeling that gradually intensified and lasted the remainder of the evening. Got me to a solid [6] after an hour, I then floated at about a [6], [7], [6], [5] for around three more hours. One of the most comfortable experiences with edibles that I've ever had.

To be honest, this is a great way to utilize your AVB. Hell, I'm not sure I'll ever use green bud in butter making again. I'd rather vape it first, then eat AVB cookies with the 'leftovers' later. It's a great, economical, way to get more out of your cannabis. If you're interested, checkout my post on the Magical Butter Machine for a review and a $25 discount.

Hi again FC fourms its been a great learning experince thanks to the Magical Butter 2.
But there is one last thing still bothering me, you see everytime i make my coconut canna-oil in the mechin i see small amounts of smoke or vapor excaping the mb2 thru the top. It smeels and im worryd i may be losing potency which is KILLING me :/ . I usally do 190 or 220 degrees, is this normal to see and smell or do i have a faulty unit i have to replace?
Im mot sure but it does bother me every time i use the mb2 , your guys help and oppinion based on experince will be appreciated. Thanks.

Now that thats off my chest :p.

Im currently making a batch of oil following BadKittySmiles GREAT tutorials on youtube.

STEEPS MADE EASY

1. Grind material to a fine powder.

2. Decarb material at 220 degrees in an oven pan coverd up with foil and in a turkey bag to save potency and conserve smell.
15-20 min for dry brittle material or
20-30 min for fresher herb.
*An accutate themostat is recomended.

3. One done let cool then mix some tbs of Lecithin with the decarbed material.
I used 2 tbs for each cup of oil.

4. mix oil just enough to cover your material entirly. Heat at 220 (or 190 like i did for fear of losing potency thru vapor) for one hour.

5. Remove all material and oil to cup and freeze in freezer for 6 to 24 hours.

6. After freezing, reheat the oil and pour it. back into the Mb2 for another final run at220 (or 190) for atleast
1 hour for functional effects
2-3 for strong relife and powerful effects
Or 4-6 hours for very stong effects ( bed. time)

Please pardon any grammer mistakes, im using an old beat up barley working touch screen phone to type this :/...

Ill keep you all updated!!

My MB2e does the same thing at 160 degrees. I always thought it was water vapor escaping.

Nice to know im not alone, i dont ever add water to my MB2 thow. I feel like it may be my plant material burning. Just a guess, not an educated one :). I do notice that at the end my material stays kinda clumped up at the bottom and looks slightly more darker then when i first put it in.

I've always thought that lecithin is best for oil based extractions because thats what Bad Kitty recommends and she is the master of this particular subject matter. However, I've never heard of using lecithin with alcohol tinctures like some of you have reported doing. My understanding of lecithin is that it promotes fat absorption and when combined with an infused oil, it additionally promotes absorption of the infusion. I don't know what it would do to an alcohol tincture.

I wouldn't worry about losing any potency with this machine, I ran my oil for 1 hour at 220 and 4 at 190 and it was stronger than ever. I'm also pretty sure the creator made it so that there is a small space on purpose for some vapors to escape as this would improve the flavor. THC shouldn't burn off unless u went around 370F

I think the issue with extended high temp cooks is less about the THC boiling point and more about the gradual conversion of THC into CBN. Keeping it at 160 or 190 should be very safe for longer cooks though.

I used this method last weekend and made the Snickerdoodles. Gotta say; it was a great success. Mellow buzz off of 1-2... sleep with 3. Now, the calorie conscious wont love this.. but I was looking for a low dosage edible that I could give my son's father in law who has been diagnosed with lung cancer. I may still need to make these cookies smaller than I did though. I gave my husband one (he doesn't partake) and he said he got so buzzed off of one he couldn't sleep. I would have thought it would have had the opposite effect. Such a lightweight, lol.

In any case, this is a great method for your abv.

Okay so i finally finished my extraction, and i would say it was the best one i have done yet.

:2c: The key steep in my opinion has to be the freezing of the oil after the first run. :2c:
I read that it helps the bonding process speed up in someway, so you don't have to leave it inside the MB for nearly as long, which helps save your precious THC from possibly becoming CBD:science:. I noticed a great difference in flavor as well!; The Oil ended up tasting alot nicer compared to my last run were i had left the MB2 running for 6+hours which effected the taste.

But I like it!
I have had my machine for a whole 2.5 days now. It was an impulse purchase after I'd dropped the wife at the airport, so no noise from the purchasing department for a few days :)

My first effort was an MCT oil extraction. About 2 cups MCT oil to 55g of various bud. I noticed steam escaping a few times, but it smelled so nice! And it has to go somewhere - we don't want pressure building up, and this design is made so pressure will escape, so thats not an issue. I've been putting 3 or 4 teaspoons in with my morning tea. It's darned tasty!

So I'm now making my 2nd thing in the MB. I'm trying an MBO extraction. 3 cups Everclear to around 90g of a combination of high THC indica, medium thc and high CBD Sativa, and about 30g of mixed ABV. As it does say 'be careful, don't smoke, don't think warm thoughts around evaping alcohol' it's running merrily on a patio table in the yard - blow up out there ya bastid!

Has anyone tried MBO extraction before? ere's the recipe I'm using. It calls for heat in the MB (160 degrees on a 4 hour tinc setting) and simmered on the stove afterwards to get down to about 1/2 cup. That should be easy to add to anything, but dosing may be a bit fun to figure out what works well... I'm probably not going to cook it down, but will let it evap for awhile, or maybe set it in a pan of hot water to speed some evaporation...

Edit - I thought the time and temp was a bit light for MCT oil, so I ran it at 210 degrees on the 4 hour Tinc setting. All dandy. I was thinking to run what they wanted, but I really wanted a touch more heat and time than they want me to want...

2nd edit - it's a cool -1c here, and a bit breezy. I can really see steam escape around the edges of the cover, and sticking my nose near the 'steam' told me that it smells just like a good house party does, of alcohol and herb. So if anyone else tries this I'd highly, highly suggest doing it outside, and away from where people might be near warm things, like sparks, or lighters, or backfiring lawnmowers. Nothing better than hot alcohol vapours floating through the house...

@outletboy Those look great! Sharesies on the recipes?

Apologies for the double-post, but this might get a bit ugly...

Anyways

And here we get started:
- 2 cups Everclear
- lowest temp
- tincture setting - 4 hours...
check, check and check...

This pic is just after I brought it inside. The 'grand reveal' as the design shows say...

JsJ8MLd.jpg

Set it outside to run - no one wants hot alcohol fumes through their house. No, they don't. End of story!

So I wander outside and check it a few times - all ticking away just dandy. I didn't hear the beep, but I check, the lights are off, and it's cool to the touch - lets get it inside and look at this beauty!

It's pretty much bone-dry. There's a bunch of herb stuck to the top...
lUPz4gL.jpg

And to the sides, and especially the bottom (it's like Newton discovering gravity all over again!)
5lhW8vj.jpg

Sp a bunch of things run through my mind - I'm a trained first responder, I can deal with emergencies... so nothing is burnt... max temp was 160f/61c, so the actives should still be in there somewhere, whatever didn't evap out... What do I have for alcohol... wine? Naw... bourbon? naw... 151! Bottle is almost empty... hey - whats that? A 1/2 full Everclear bottle? Great!

Dump in another (just shy of) 2 cups of EC, and ran the 'tinc' setting at 160 again. This time indoors, on the counter, but with the door open. I only ran it until the grinder went once. I then unplugged, opened, and poured into a stainless bowl.

It was goo! Thick and black, like tar! It started to separate a bit, so I started spooning the alcohol off... too slow... started pouring it onto the empty EC bottle... Hmmm... lets just dump the entire mess into a mason jar and cogitate...

Here we see the NeverClear on top, and the Cannaslurry below... This after almost 20 seconds of settling time...

bJg5lzC.jpg

So... while cleaning up I swabbed a couple of fingerfuls of the black EC up while cleaning up... and started to feel a bit, umm, I dunno what exactly. I'm not worried about it having a weird effect or anything, but in case I fall asleep I fed the mutt, and we're going to go for a walk. I'm a bit light-headed, kinda jello-coated like with codeine, and feeling just a bit floaty.

Anyways... I have no clue how to titrate with this stuff, or even really have any idea what to do with it. If I make something, say gummies, I'll have to take them by 1/8ths to start with. There could potentially be actives from around 90-ish grams in here, somewhere...

So... open to suggestions on what the heck to do with this now. The alcohol I can use as tinc (maybe kinda strong for human use? maybe not?) I'm gonna toss a tablespoonful into an inch of honey and see how that works with tea in the am. That could be fun...

Should I heat-treat it? Freeze it? Separate the solids and try it with glycerine? I dunno.

PS - still floaty, but also goose-bumpy... might be a pizza night...

sometimes experimenting can lead to this. :)

i'd get some 00 capsules and cap that stuff up. not knowing dosage, this way you can pop one or two then go from there.

the first and only thing i've made with the MB2 is coconut oil. it's great and i can't think of any reason to try making anything else.

good luck.

So on a bit of a whim I bought a MB. I've made smaller batches of crockpot canna oil and it's been real hit and miss.

So I didn't get that you needed a minimum of 14g PER CUP, with a minimum of 2 cups. I was able to find up 24g plus 4g of ABV and maybe a g of kief. I also added soy lectins and lemongrass oil.

I decarbed at 220 for 50 min. Then 60 min at 190 and the 4 hours at 160.

We will take our first dose tonight. The final product is much more green and darker then my previous runs, and I hope that is a good sign. These go in 00 caps.

So time jump later about 4hrs... We each took 1 cap to really good effect. 2 would be perfect.

I was very nervous about the amount of money put into this. I can say I'm vey pleased with results. Fortunately, I have a good supply from this and won't need more for quite a while.

It's a hog, but worth the investment if you can make it.

But I like it!
Sounds great! I did hear back from MB, and they suggest that I add 1/4 cup of distilled water to the next batch to help counter the effects of altitude. Who knew 1300 feet above sea level is to high? We were higher in our last home :)

So the tincture I'll bottle, dry the sludge and hope it doesn't melt the caps when dry. Or maybe try it with budder and see if there is anything left in it, but I doubt it...

I'm going to cap some of the MCT oil. I ordered a thing to hold the caps from amazon but it's not here yet. Just use a syringe to fill caps? Pipettes?

I'm going to put the rest of the MCT oil into the machine. I'm very pleased at how that came out! I also discovered in the FB group that everyone still recommends a decarb before using the machine for edibles, so I'll keep doing that...

PS @ratnamedbob you can mix coconut oil or butter with water in the machine for smaller batches, you'll just need to separate the water and oil in the fridge later...

killick,
Are you sure about adding water?

From what I took in the thread is that you should not add water to the MB. Did that come from the manufacturer?

I use pipettes and a 24 pill machine from Amazon and it works pretty well. Just remember to push up the bottom filled part into the caps, and then the completed pill from the top. I would practice with one or two empty first as I've messed it up and lost pills that way.

Ive been making both budders for awhile now. Butter and coco or butter won't mix with water, and will separate at room temp. So when you want to make something, but don't have enough for the 2 cup minimum, use what you have and put in as much water as you want. So if you have enough abv for 1 cup of product, use that and the 1 cup, and top with water so the MB is at least at it's min, but it won't matter if you go to 'max' either. When the cycle is done pour into a curve-sided container and put in the fridge for awhile, til the top layer is solid. Press down on one side and the other will flip up - thats your good stuff. The watery goop on the bottom can get dumped. You might have to remelt and refilter your disk, depending on how well it was filtered the first time.

I made tincture with Everclear in mine - the second thing I ever made, and all the EC boiled off. I'm at 1300 ft above sea level. MB tech support told me to add 1/4 cup of demineralized water to the EC mix to avoid evaporation. Water won't hurt the MB either.

I have to go find some pipettes. I got the pill machine yesterday and spent a bit of time playing with it. This one has a spring-loaded top and bottom, so you get exert some pressure to ensure the caps stay together. I'm looking forward to trying this out!
