@Enchantre - I'm hoping to use this with a vape pen. But it was the search for edibles that led me here. Are you suggesting ISO for vapables and Everclear for ingestables? Thats whats been running around in my head a little, but it's all 'voodoo and bullshit' with not a trace of science. ISO is really cheap here - we picked up 2 litres of 99% ISO for $8 a few days ago. I picked up a 750 ml bottle of high test Everclear for $38, so economically ISO is the way to go. I'll do another hot water bath purge (just hot water in a pan, change if it gets cool before it looks ready), and maybe a heating pad to finish it.

Thanks for the Massage Oil recipe - made my first batch last night :)

@Enchantre @Quetzalcoatl wouldn't vaping technically be ingesting as well? I was getting small sparks (very small, not very often) which I assumed was the trapped alcohol being burnt off. I'm assuming I would have ingested some. I'm guessing this is less of an issue with ISO as it should evap better/faster/gooder?

I'm going to use glass for evaping, until the PTFE parchment shows up. Also a larger oil slick pad. This is how most of my hobbies start, and how I went from 1 vape to 2 vapes over a year, and then from 2 vapes to 5 vapes and 2 bubblers less than 4 months after discovering FC. I love you guys

I spread a slick pad in a pyrex plate, then a ptfe oil slick sheet, over my heating pad. The pad act as a heat spreader, hold the ptfe sheet without clips, and allows you to reduce the evaporating surface area. You can stick a mug under the pad, shot glasses etc. The smaller puddle is easier to manage for the final purge, the 140F for 30 to 60min purge.

I hope all that make sens?

Thanks @spoutti!

I'm waiting on PTFE parchment paper and a platinum-cured oilslick pad.

I got less than expected from my first wash, but it was a fast one. It's tasty tho! The remnants are in the freezer for a 2nd go later, which should be more fruitful with a bit of luck...

When making my VERY POTENT Green Dragon Tincture for both vaping AND ingestion (drops), my best batches were made with Everclear. I vape the tinc by saturating small 100% cotton swabs 3X (i.e., saturate/fan dry, saturate/fan dry, saturate/fan dry) with the GD tincture, placing them on a plate under a fan (3X, see above) for a day until they are completely dried with no alcohol residue detectable to taste. Place swab in vape and BLAST OFF!!! Endless powerful clouds!!!

Yes... EC for edibles, and ISO for vaporizing...

I always just throw that out there, as ISO shouldn't be ingested..
Yikes, let me return to this thread from my early days of oil making to state that if there is enough residual ISO to make your oils unsafe for oral ingestion, then that oil is unsafe for dabbing too!

Only use ISO if you are 100% that your purge is completely removing the ISO. This means absolutely no bubbles allowed in the case of heat only purge. Isopropyl, when heated to dab temp (as in dabbed on your nail) can lead will breakdown due to thermal decomposition. The stuff you're left to inhale small amounts of propane and water (not such a big deal) but large amounts of acetone are formed in the thermal decomp process of ISO. Basically without following the decomposition of ISO all the way down the line, ISO is only safe to use when properly purged. When properly purged, it is perfectly safe to orally ingest or dab.

If you can't purge it properly, don't use it. It is not worth the risks and you can just use ethanol!

I would not be dabbing anything with residual ethanol in it even, as I don't like the hot, harsh feeling of the dabbing ethanol. However, this is not such a major safety concern.

Please be safe guys!

Hey herbivore, whats up? Are you still making QWISO amber shatter? My fear using iso is to messup the short wash, and now that you talk about it, having poisonus iso left in it. But as killick and you, iso is much cheaper for me. It would be nice if you detailed your iso free qwiso shatter purge tech. At my extracting artist level :science:, I over apply the final purge (30-60min at 140F, last time I did at 180F to be sure the alcool was boiling and all purged) to the point of decarbing a lot to be alcool free. The result is less shattery and less tasty.

Why 140F if alcool boiling point is 173F? Is puddle is fluid enough to separate the alcool on top of the concentrate and evaporates?

I think the main point is to correctly differienciate the alcool bubbles from the c02 bubbles resulting from decarbing. During the end of the initial purge, there are only the alcool bubbles. Easy game. But during the 140F purge, im not confident.

I know the easy answer is to get a vac setup; perfect mecanical purge. But I wont be getting it soon, I superbly ignored all infos about vac purge as I wasnt expecting to use one with qwet. Any tips to heed to your warning would be appreciated

Thanks @spoutti!

What I can tell you is that without a vac or some next level custom tek, your best bet is to let as much of the iso as possible evaporate in a cool, well ventilated dry and dark place over time (days/weeks) until there is very little remaining iso (none/almost none visible and little iso smell). Then heat purge in the same manner as you have done until there are no more bubbles. You should find your consistency will be better, and you will retain a bit more flavour.

Short of that, you gotta get a vac setup or develop your own custom tek. ;)

Fark - and my new hobby starts here.... now I havta reread the thread and start taking notes, and then you guys are gonna call me 'n00b' again until I get my whole layout in a lovely .png I can share with the rest of the thread. What a bunch of bastids...

(thanks guys - it was likely gonna happen anyways, you guys just sped it along :)

I thought you were ripe to share your purge tech; just needed a nice post asking nicely. Cant fault me for trying :)

Right now, I find confidence in stopping the final purge WHILE there are bubbles. When all bubbles are popping on the smaller side. I had no alcool taste and harshness, but 2 different strains tasted the same having received a similar treatment. That was at 180F, so maybe it differs at 140F..

Man, I'm happy you guys are so open with your knowledge! It really helps with confidence. I dunno whi I was nervous about ISO - likely just the label I guess. Now I can save the Everclear for whoopin it up in the campsite, once it's turned into a much weaker coffee liquor!

I unfortunately have to draw the line at sharing the proprietary elements of my tek/hardware for reasons I've gone through many, many a time before.

However, I'm always happy to help people with questions about oil tek that do not venture into this territory. There are many ways to get great oils, I just discovered a really efficient one! :)

Furthermore, as many have probably noticed, I make it my business to provide advice where I notice somebody talking about doing something that is even potentially unsafe! No FCer is doing anything unhealthy in the pursuit of concentrates if I can help it! This is what friends do! ;)

EDIT: Wow, I was seriously medicated earlier today when I posted in here. Look at how many editing mistakes I made! lollercoasterz

I am new here, read a lot of the information from a lot of people so i wanted to thank you all for sharing

I am going to try my first iso run tomorrow with about 10 grams of bud, using 99% iso quick 30 second wash and than filtering it and leaving it with a fan blowing on it in an empty room until completely dried up (about 24 hours or until dry and doesn't smell of iso) and i was going to try to do 2 runs for sure optional 3rd if i like the results of the 2nd run

my plan was than to mix it with pg/vg 0 nic Ecig juice that i got to make it useable in ecigs
i am waiting to hear from a pharmacy in regards to some pg so i will make an unflavored mix as well and see how it goes

i am not a 100% sure on the mix of shatter to pg/vg i was going to try and do ([vG 7 to PG 3] 2:1 iso shatter/oil ratio and to add more as needed if it turns too thick
(i have read elsewhere here on using EJ mix from liquidizer but as i understand it its still the same blend of vg 7 to pg 3, and is something i will try next when i have a chance to order it)

i was wondering if there was anything i should be aware off or anything else i will need to do? any response is appreciated as i am knew at this and defiantly want this to work out as i do want to get into vaping but have no access to oils or concentrates easily

@canadianleaf somewhere in the forums is an ejuice recipe that is basically a couple of grams of herb in a jar with VG and that is simmered in a slow cooker bath, and then mixed with some other stuff (I just read it, haven't used it, but it sounds like what you are after.

As for the qwiso run - look up qwiso in the forums and read some threads. @herbivore21 has a post that outlines the exact things to watch our for on your first run. I should have read it before my first run. It all worked fine, just a couple of panic moments when things didn't quite go as expected that are easily avoided...

Take pix and tell us how it turns out!

PS - you don't need concentrates to vape... I've been vaping as an mmj patient for 18 months now, and just tried concentrates in the past couple of weeks. There are a bunch of great herb and conc vapes out there, and many do both with a bit of putzing around...

I forgot to take a pictures when i started. but i definatly had a panic note i read and Used @herbivore21 guide as well and followed it almost exactly ( i skipped the baking part as i had no option of doing it) right now its almost dry just a thin film covering most of the dish. I will take pics tmrw after 24 hours air drying. ( i will heat water purge only if it smells of iso after 24 hours )
I ordered ejm mix today but it will be a couple days before it gets here;

What is the best way to store the material for a few days that i get until the ejm mix gets here?

I am going to do a second run as per the recipe i put all the herbs back in the freezer

I do have my own pg and vg medical grade mixes so i did wanna try mixing my own batch as well and seeing how it would go I guess for learning and trial and error purposes if that makes any sense. I really hope ill get the mix right here lol i was thinking 1:1 (7vg to 3 pg ) and to add more as needed

Qwiso seemed like the easiest place to start for me, just for some reason felt at ease with trying it. I have thought about mixing straight bud with pg but for some reason didnt trust that method and dont have acess to a slow cooker

I do wana learn more about vaping and i feel like i am in the right place :)

You can keep it on the plate, cover it with cheesecloth or something similar so no dust/particles float on it. Cool dark place is fine after evaporating. There's a reason we're talking about making ejuice with EJMix or skipping it and using RDA's to vape oil instead of VG/PG, the solubility in them is just not very good. IIRC total solubility of cannabinoids in VG is only 1/3 the solubility of cannabinoids in alcohol and it takes a long time for the VG to fully saturate (needing a lot of mechanical movement as well). I wouldn't bother since it will very likely separate if you try adding concentrate to it.

You are certainly in the right place! I've been learning tons in the past couple of months, and you will find lots of people jumping in with helpful pointers and advice should you need it. Welcome to the forums :)
