Herb Grinders

I've tried a few and still use others from time to time, but my 2 piece SC (med) is what I usually reach for first. Easy to grind course with just a quick twist or two, medium with varying size, or get a find grind if you keep going with it. Kief usually doesn't stick too badly, and if a few quick taps don't knock it all out, a quick swipe with small paint brush does. Full clean on occasion using Mendo's freezer trick then alcohol. The diamond shaped teeth easily cut through everything I throw at it. Never used the 2 pc small, but am guessing it would be similar.

FWIW, I'd steer away from using a 4 piece upside down. It will work, but if you've used it right side up keif will fall all over, get into threads, etc. When I used a 4 piece, I tried to keep it upright at all times - even in transit.

Know you weren't asking about vapes, but if you value efficiency and don't have to be portable, check out the e-nano. Extremely efficient vape.

Is yours also a mini (1.7in)? The mini is very different from the small and large sizes, the only thing they have in common is the tooth design. It is much thinner than the other sizes so it's hard to get a good grip on it and it has a lot of teeth for it's size. I agree that the mini can be very hard to turn when loaded up (depending on the material), but that does not apply to the other sizes of Santa Cruz Shredders. I use my mini for an extra fine grind and I'm pretty happy with it, you just have to load it right so it will turn. The mini SCS should be compared to other mini/micro grinders that are the same size or smaller, not the small (2 in.) or larger size grinders. Apples and oranges.

.
I stand corrected. I just assumed it was a small one but I didnt buy it so I didnt really know. I just measured it and looked on their site and it is definitely a mini. I have another grinder though that is very close in size but does not have the issue.

A quality American made grinder from Space Case, SCS, Mendo Mulcher, etc was almost certainly cleaned up during final finishing. Old tooth brush and dish soap would be more adequate.

A Chromium Crusher or similar nice but discount device from Amazon made in India/China from recycled ranrom pot metal from a decommissioned secret chemical munutions factory should probably be prepared by covering it with a thick protective layer of gift wrapping paper.

My Mendo came "dirty" there was machine oil and grease on it. Full disclosure I bought it from massdrop and I think they were made to order (I got mine at the end of month clearance) so because it was a custom run it might have been rushed out the door. Its not a big deal as I stated above I would have given it the same cleaning whether it looked clean or not when it showed up, just my :2c:

I don't know if this has been posted up here before but I just ran across this that I thought some of you may really like. Pretty innovative, if ya ask me.

It's about how to clean a grinder and reclaim. Yeah, it's a bit of chore, but an interesting method nonetheless. Check it out:
---------------------------------------------------------------
The best way to clean a space case grinder & screen encrusted with thc!

Boil a saucepan of water
Put in some butter- I used about ⅛ of a stick
Stir the butter around so it melts
Put in the separate pieces of your grinder
The butter stays mostly on the surface so you’ll want to stir it around and scrub it with a toothbrush or scrubbing brush of some type, make sure the butter gets on the surfaces of the grinder
Leave it to soak for 15 mins
Come back and give it a thorough scrubbing. The impacted thc dust will flake off with remarkably little effort.
Remove the grinder pieces. Leave the pan of buttery water to cool.
When it is cool, put it in the fridge. The next day, the cannabutter should have separated to the top of the water and you should be able to scoop it out. Delicious on toast, or bake biscuits!
In the meantime, Boil some more water and soak & scrub your grinder with detergent to clean off the greasy butter.
Then you’ll want to soak & scrub again in clean boiling water to ensure no detergent remains.
Behold your clean-as-new space case and lump of cannabutter!
WARNING!!! Depending on how encrusted with thc dust your space case is before cleaning, the butter you make may be extremely potent! Don’t give it to newbs

I wonder if simmering in heavy cream would yield a similar result. Pour it in my coffee?

It should! Wouldn't even really need heavy cream. Half & half or whole milk should work. Many (me included) clean some of our glass using this method. Definitely want to be sure you clean the grinder well after putting it in anything dairy, though.

Would work great in coffee, but I usually make hot chocolate with the milk. It's already warm, so just add some cocoa & a bit of sugar and you're good to go. FWIW, cocoa can be a bitch to mix well with hot milk. I usually mix it and the sugar with a little water or cool milk (thick but well blended) than stir the charged hot milk into this.

Be careful, though! You'd be surprised how strong it can be from a gooey solo stem, and that's when usually making two servings. Guessing a gummy grinder could pack quite a kick.

I will proceed with caution.

In an apartment at the moment. Hope to be in the new house in a month or two. May have to wait. Not sure how stinky it would be.

On glass stems and whatnot smell is minimal. Would open a window or use a fan if exhaust is outside. Not nearly as bad as making butter or something. Pretty sure smell is gone in about 1/2 hour, but not sure how it would smell to someone who came in fresh and wasn't drinking it.;)

Santa Cruz Shredders seem to be sold out of their 3 piece grinders on their website, but there are several for sale on eBay. Should I be worried about counterfeit products not buying these directly from the manufacturer?

I wouldn't even be worried about it at all, except that the eBay listings have the word "Authentic" in the product title (e.g., Santa Cruz Shredder 3 Piece Grinder Small ALUMINUM Authentic) which made me wonder if I should be worried about authenticity here.

Link here would help. I wouldn't do it without checking with Santa Cruz to see if they know the vendor. They'll probably also tell you when they expect new stock of their own if you ask.

Thanks for the input, flotntoke :)

I was hesitant to post a link because I did not want it to look like I was "advertising" for the guy, but of course you are right that it would be helpful to know what I'm talking about, so here it is http://www.ebay.com/itm/191465619496 and if you look at the sellers storefront, you can see they are offering several, all with the word "authentic" in the item name.

I had sent a message to SCS (using the contact form on their website) but I never heard anything back from them; I know they are a small company, so hopefully just backlogged with communication and I will hear from them eventually. But in the meantime, I figured somebody here might have some experience one way or another with the possibility of counterfeit or "un-authentic" SCS merchandise.

I don't have the 3 piece personally, but everything about that piece looks legit. Looks very similar to my 4-piece. And has the rounded inside chamber is unique to this grinder (haven't seen any other 3 piece like it). If that's not a fake, it's one of the best looking fakes you can get - even has the proper 4-star teeth pattern (which is what makes it a shredder and not a grinder)

I'd say if you *REALLY* want to buy from this vendor, go ahead, but at least check his warranty policy.

The only thing you might want to worry about is a bent grinder. I believe @Deja Vu had an issue with hard rubbing - it seemed his grinder was not 'true' and lopsided (bent out of alignment? is that possible?). In either case I believe he ultimately resolved the issue with his vendor and received a functional SCS.

You'll know right away if you have an issue - any high quality grinder like the SCS should turn like butter. Even when loaded full of herbs, it should grind with extreme ease. If you feel the grinder "catch" on one or to spots, you know you have a problem.

Ebay is great for deals, but always confirm the warranty is valid, or the vendor will accept a return if you have a problem.

@Khantagious, I was looking at that vendor as well. They ship cheaper than most to Australia (still gouging a bit I think as the shipping is $19.17 and I had a Pinnacle Water Tube sent to me with packaging that said $10.95 postage), and they also have it in stock. SCS doesn't have any and a lot of other vendors are out or close to it.

If you have any communication with them about their warranty policy, please post about it in this thread.

Cheers

Sure does look authentic. Think I'm with @Ratchett .... even if not a true Santa Cruz, should be the same. I'd buy it if I didn't want to wait for SCS to restock. Just make sure it functions well. A couple stems will usually tell you quickly how well a grinder can do.

I was able to resolve that hard rubbibng feeling (as if there was grit or grime on the rubber causing some friction) by just rubbing it with a tissue, or applying EXTREME pressure and twisting it. I just had to chug through it..
I've since given that grinder to my sister and told her to cherish it because it's the best one in the world lol

Hey guys so I can see the consensus is the Santa Cruz shredder is the best grinder for "shredding" and not grinding your stuff for let's say the crafty so it doesn't leak through the screen. Does the SCS also shred material that's very dry ? I can't seem to get a good shred on any of my grinders they all grind too much and it always leaks ABV through the screen in the crafty. I'm not trying to waste money so I really don't wanna spend $50 on a grinder if it's not absolutely worth it and better then let's say a mendo mulcher and the storz and bickel grinder which both I have and they grind everything too fine. I'm looking for the perfect shred which the SCS 3 piece seems to provide I just want to know if it will do this with some sours that's on the dry side since its cold my stash dried up kind of fast

Hi all, looking for some advice if possible. I've been having a good read through the thread and the general consensus being that the Santa Cruz Shredder (SCS) is the one to go for, as long as you don't buy the smallest sized model.

I currently own a Kannastor 4 piece with the clear top and it's worked well over the 3 years I've owned. Previously to this, I owned a Space Case 4 piece (aluminium model).

Now then, here's the problem... I'm in the UK and the price difference between two grinders I'm looking at is making me consider the cheaper, International option.

Anyway... here's the choices.
1) Buy from the UK, a "SCS Rasta/ IRIE" 4 piece, size 70mm (large)... Only it's £75.50 including delivery (close to $115 USD), UK to UK. http://www.alibongo.co.uk/catalog/s....html?oscsid=b78e0d43ac704f400f34d74b214dff81

2) Buy from the US, a "Cosmic Case" Rasta 4 piece, size 70mm (large)... this one is $83.50 USD including delivery US to UK due to a 11% discount. http://www.vaporwarehouse.com/site/cosmic-case-grinder-large-triple.html

The problem with the latter is that I could face 20% import fees when it arrives in the country. However, this is purely pot luck in general.

I like the idea of having a Rasta cosmic case for two reasons - one being that apparently they're the original maker of the Space Case design from years back (regardless they're similar grinders anyway, with some people saying CC is better than SC, ever so slightly) and secondly because they'll be less common.

Advice/ ideas/ thoughts? Thanks a bunch all.

Just found this UK site.

https://www.santacruzshredder.co.uk

Not sure if its legit or not. I will favorite and keep checking.

Thanks for that. Yeah I'd checked that site out just under a week ago when I'd started my research. I could always contact Santa Cruz USA and ask them when their UK site will be up and running, but from what I've heard from a couple of retailers, it takes a while for Santa Cruz to formulate a response (time I mightn't have if that Vapor Warehouse discount runs out).

I think if I'm completely honest with myself, the 70mm Rasta SCS is what I want, but I'm pushed into the Cosmic Case option due to saving on money, bigger storage compartment (main chamber) and better shade of colours (and logos etc - I'm a "visuals" guy).

How much can fit in the small SCS 3 piece?
If you were to actually fill up the bottom container I'm sure it would hold a gram or two easily. I have never filled it and measured the volume however. I tend to use that portion of the grinder as a work space not a storage space. I like the fact that it lines up with the S&B filling tool so well and when you grind a few nugs it seems to be just the right amount to load in there.
