@spoutti In your signature you say you've a "5400 years old Bog Oak stem" and I'm curious, what exactly does that look like? Can you throw up a pic of it? Sounds interesting.
Sure! Its collecting dust now, I prefer glass on my solo. But it has a nice place for it on a wooden decoration of mine.

Glad I read this, I've had my herc for months and mine has had zero airflow lately when I first start it up. I thought it was the temp getting lower (lower for me is 60's so I was skeptical), I only recently actually started buying shatter. Takes awhile sometimes to get the airflow back and then I get a bit of a burnt taste. After that it works perfectly again. I think I'll try pulsing a bit until I get airflow before taking my first hit.
Exact same experience as you. The first few hits are clogged and once it is released, taste kind of funky. After that, flavor city.

Yeah I have had this issue before as well, I assume it is caused by the oil hardening up after cooling. If you are taking cooldown draws until it completely cools it will keep a little air tunnel through the hardened oil. If the oil completely saturates the coil and hardens then when you again try to take a puff the airflow is blocked, so the ceramic rod cannot wick properly and just starts to burn the surrounding oil until the entire bulk of oil is soft enough to pull through. Best method is to just lightly pulse and stiffly draw until it opens up, then it's game on!

That's exactly what I found out too. I noticed when you have good air flow the SR heats up and produces clouds of tasty vapor in about 5-6 seconds cold start. When my airflow is blocked my first couple of hits do taste burnt for the same exact reasons @torggzorz explained.

Do you guys leave on the black sleeve? I feel that helps when I leave it off. I think I want to give this a cleaning. Do I just ISO the black parts? Boil the metal?

What is the importance of the black nut on the mouthpiece? Is that black nut high heat resistance since the top cap gets always stuck in the mouthpiece?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm ocd

THIS x1000!!!! The key to success, knowing if your cool downs are "good enough". This is the answer, perfectly explained. Thanks torgz.

Dude, not to pick on you, but how many times are you going to ask how to clean the Hercules? I have answered you asking about how to clean the Herc 3 times in this thread already, bud! You can Iso soak all the parts or boil all the parts using a sifter or iso soak only the parts you feel are really oily and need it or whatever combination works for you. Just try something! I bet it will work!

If you use a shallow pot or pan and a strainer like this (These aren't the ones I have, I just went to a local store and picked something up. A fairly small sifter or strainer will get the job done.)
http://www.amazon.com/Cuisinart-CTG...1_1_1?s=kitchen&ie=UTF8&qid=1418076451&sr=1-1

You can put ALL the parts into boiling distilled water inside a sifter. (As @Fredster951 said, the bottom adaptor doesn't need to be soaked or boiled. Cleaning its contacts with an ISO soaked cotton swab has always worked for me.) Hold the sifters handle, "tossing" its contents/move it around in the water constantly while immersed. The plastic pieces won't melt in boiling water if they aren't sitting still on the bottom of the pot.

When the parts are really oily after a lot of gnarly use. I ISO rinse/soak everything quickly to dissolve the majority of the oil off and then do the distilled water boil afterwards. Overkill? Maybe. Easy with no scrubbing to get perfectly clean? Yes.

Pull the parts out of boiling water.. I use a strainer. I shake the strainer gently, dump all the parts onto a towel. When they are cool enough to touch, the Herc may be assembled, I reassemble the Herc and hold the button until the rod is glowing red hot. This does 3 things: cleans the rod, checks proper operation, and gets all the water out. Only after I know that the Hercules is working properly do I put the coil in and then load it with concentrate.

Yes. If you use the Hercules with the Nibbler XL the black heatshield is required for operation. Airflow doesn't work without the shield.

What is the importance of the black nut on the mouthpiece? Is that black nut high heat resistance since the top cap gets always stuck in the mouthpiece?
The black nut on the mouthpiece that is removed with a coin is for holding the metal screen in the mouthpiece. It also seals the stainless steel top cap to the mouthpiece. Without it, you are probably not going to get proper operation.

The only two optional pieces in the Hercules are the Adjustable Airflow Washer and the top screen, with oil. The top screen isn't optional with flower or kief. All the other parts need to be there for it to work correctly.

I also prefer a through explanation leading to a complete understanding to settle my curiosity. I hope this helps your OCD :)

So I was just watching one of my favorite episodes of Star Trek: TNG and they were talking about the Utopia Planitia Ship Yards.... hehehe... found this on a trekkie site -

Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, also known as Utopia Planitia Starfleet Yards or Utopia Planitia Shipyards, was a key Starfleet vessel construction and design facility in the 24th century. The facility included a number of drydocks and space stations, as well as several large drafting rooms for starship design and planetary facilities on the surface of Mars.

Also just standard encyclopedic info -

Utopia Planitia is the largest recognized impact basin on Mars and in the Solar System with an estimated diameter of 3300 km.

Maybe old hat info for some veterans but it was entertaining to me!

Which episode?

I was raised on the Next Generation. Just went to my first convention about a month ago in Bellevue, WA.

Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker) was stoked on our legal weed. Pretty sure he was high during his audience Q&A. I'd guess he was in need of a hangover cure from the previous night... He spent a large portion of his time with the mic lying down on the floor of the stage rambling, and occasionally singing

Not joking.

S3E6: Booby Trap - Giordi has to work with a simulation of one of the original designers of the enterprise in the holodeck to solve the dilema. I always thought it had a number of really cool factors throughout.

There were also a couple other episodes that mention Utopia Planitia apparently but I forget which they were and am too lazy to search now... I'll find them eventually on my binge watch netflix spree

ROFL about your experience at the trekfest

Hey I've been thinking about getting the Persei for a while now. How do you guys rate it? Also how easy is it to use all these different size batteries have me kind of hesitant.

It does and I do take medication. You know I always appreciate your help samuraisam. I got thick skin so you are not picking on me. No more cleaning talk

So...the herc runs from 3.7 to 7.4 depending what batteries are powering it?

So hammer top...ss tube...the short battery that would run the herc at 3.7 well enough?

Hammer top + core would essentially do the same thing yet better?

Looking for a way to run a herc without buying a persei.

@Breathemetal id say it depends on what you want portable wise herc+ hammer top+sskit and some batteries would get you up and running if you dont need to be portable herc+hammer top+core would get you the most reliable power option

lonelyhero,
I have not had any real success with the herc sr 74 on my persei, I don't want something that is touchy or complicated so I am planning to sell/trade on here! I'd try to troubleshoot but I've read a lot and if it is going to have to be manipulated constantly in the future I'd rather just have something reliable.

The herc is an amazing machine, @LiLRUBYDOLL what's happening with your herc?

once you've got it dialed in once your good

almost all the problems I've seen seem to be related to one of three things.

most common I'd say is rod placement it needs to be making good solid contact

Second is using non aw batteries the batteries that come with the Persei aren't strong enough but will heat enough to drain oil to the lower chamber

Third is cool down hits make sure to inhale without holding the button until you no longer hear the oil popping in the air holes

Would you say once dialed in, it gives way better hits than the grade 2 ti kiss carts with okeanos? Or a dab off a rig?

Much more flavorful. More flavor than my Dnail with hive ceramic. The cloud is denser with the dnail, but I think water filtration strips some of the flavor.

@Breathemetal - i am not keen on running the 18350 setup for my 3.7 herc, it just didnt get hot enough fast enough and would leak oil to reclaim chamber readily. I wanted desperately the 18350/herc combo, but when i actually got some legit 18650s (bought unit used, no aw's on hand :( ), there was no going back. If im in a pinch ill go 18350 and globe, but herc and 18650 is a must imo. I just unscrew and place in seperate pockets. If im lucky and its cold enough for a jacket, i can fit it in my inside coat pocket.

@LiLRUBYDOLL never had an okeanos yet, but herc + nibbler xl is pretty much the definition of opulence. I know the herc is a bit overwhelming for most initially, but i only have a select few friends i still cant hand it to. Most people get the hang of it, and its much simpler than these 1000 pages would make you believe. Ive never touched a multimeter to my device and have manhandled the shit out of the herc, only killing batteries even in harsh drops. The small wick and coil carts hold no candle to the herc.
