Discontinued The Herbalizer

UPS now has my Herbie. I already miss it.

I almost feel guilty that I live about 10 miles from Herbie headquarters. If an issue arises or I have some questions I can just swing by their office. I'm sure they'll do their best to get your beloved Herbie back to you as quickly as possible.

I figured. I imagine it's listed somewhere as to how, but is "qualifying" hard?

On to a more on topic topic!

I've been out totally out of bud, so to try and save on butane I've been trying my concentrates with my lovely Herbie. Unfortunately, I've been a little underwhelmed. The vapor has been on the wispy side, and it takes me a few bags (3-4ish) to finish it off, even at max temperature.

Any of you who use concentrates in the Herbalizer more often than I do have any extra steps in your routine? I clean my screens pretty obsessively, but I'll be doing that again today to be sure that's not causing my issue.. Should I try soaking the concentrate pad in iso too?

In search of the best terps and smoothest vapor
@FaceDownScutUp The only other thing I can think of is to try to preheat the bowl and pad before you drop on your concentrate. I only find that helps if it's cold in the room.

Otherwise it sounds like your routine fits mine, and I get super thick clouds and usually am good after one bag with concentratea.

I finally got around to configuring the Pelican 1400 case I got in an Amazon lightning deal. I fit a lot in there and wanted to show everyone what is possible with this compact case. I posted two pics so you could see everything but I have everything I can think I need for a portable Herbalizer solution to support whip/balloon/hydratube. I did not include any room for a grinder unless I ditch the hydratube because two filled Jyarz can last long enough for me.

In it I have a
1. Herbalizer with whip and cleaning tool inside
2. Two Jyarz
3. Balloon
4. Power cord
5. glass adapter for hemp filter
6. Hydratube adapter
7. Hydratube

This will make the trips to my grower more fun for both of us :)

Looks good. Does your foam smell at all? I had some Herbie stuff in my 1400 and it picked up the smell and taste. I stopped using it.

John L--that is a sweet setup.
How much on Amazin lightning deal? I'm not familiar with Amazon--is that just a super special/ limited time deal they will sometimes run?
Please---if you see it again, let us know.
I was not interested until seeing your setup-----

I sent Herbalizer an email last nite regarding my temperature issue.

One thing I forgot to mention was that previous to my herbie's performance drop I could actually vape concentrates thru my water pipe pretty effectively. Then one day I tried to do the exact same thing and, for some reason, it just wasn't happening.

My herb does get fairly browned, but I don't feel like I'm get the same amount of hits from it. If I tried to get every last bit out of my herb when it was working properly it would get dark brown. Now when I do that it just looks like normal ABV. Someone tell me if I'm making sense here.

I should mention I use a pretty fine grind and pack the bowl up to where it starts to widen. Also, I use the herbie in whip mode with fan assist using 3/8in ID silicone tubing. I keep the fan assist on at the end of the bowl and puff on it until I see no vapor.

With the Herbalizer my ABV is typically light to medium brown even at the higher temperatures 425f +. I think it's the convection aspect of the vape that causes this result. With Herbie I don't think light or medium brown ABV is indicative of less than full extraction. Although the ABV produced is not as dark as with some Vapes, Herbie does get me very medicated.

I also have been communicating with Herbalizer with regard to temperature issues I've had since receiving the device. Not sure if they are related to what you are experiencing. By using the Cooper-Atkins DFP450W-0-8 thermopen and a stand to where the thermo needle sits right in the bowl above a clean bottom screen (which is where Herbalizer team told me temperature is measured), the unit is far from "precise temperature control" as they state. I am hoping this is a defective unit and not normal operation but they have yet to provide me with any resolution.

Basically, if I set the device to 445f for instance, wait for it to indicate its at temp, and measure with the thermometer, the actual temp can be up to 200f below that value. Nothing will Vape. The only way I can get my herbalizer up to the temp specified at the LED is by running the fan. Once the fan stops, its generally at the right temp (-10f/15f) for ~ 5 seconds, but will quickly and continually drop temperature until it is back down to ~200f or less within 3 minutes. When my unit is showing 445f at the led, with fan off, I can place my finger just a couple mm above the bowl and not flinch at any significant heat.

So basically, the temperature on the led on my device only tells me one thing - the temperature I can expect it to be at when the fan has completed its cycle, for a couple of seconds. Beyond that, its on a quick slope back down to unvapeable temperatures :(.

I don't feel like I'm getting as many hits nor getting the same effect. Also, the performance with concentrates has taken an apparent turn for the worse. My piece used to fill up with vapor for a few hits and now it has turned to a slow trickle of vapor.

Also, if combustion occurs at 451 degrees. I would assume at 445 my material would be pretty dark which was the case when it was running hotter. Is it possible my herbie was running too hot and now is running at regular temp?

The heat is generated when air is drawn across the halogen bulb. I don't think testing the unit while it's not in use is the correct way. I think you need to put the bowl on and turn the fan on and test the temp inside the bowl to get a correct measurement.

I don't think my herbie is too far off. If I had to guess I would say mine is like 10-15 degrees off. Do you get vapor when you use it?

I was thinking the same thing. It is a convection vape so it is only the hot air that brings it up to temp---either by you drawing on the mouthpiece OR the fan is on and pushing hot air.

You stop drawing or turn off the fan and the hot air stops, temp drops in bowl. That's why it doesn't cook your herbs between vapes, like a conduction vape can.

edit: corrected accidentally switching conduction and convection--sorry

You have them mixed up but you have the right idea. Herbie is a convection vape.

You guys have been validated. I got this from Herbalizer:

I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you! I've been talking to our CTO about it and it's actually very complicated. Because of exponential temperature decay of a lumped mass thermal system, the readings that you're seeing are completely normal. And what it actually shows is that your unit is spot on with its calibration. (The Herbie is purposely calibrated to be about 10 degrees lower than the display for safety reasons.)

I guess I should'nt quit my day job.

Wtf? That means my Herbie is actually at 435 instead of 445?

I don't leave my herbie in the case so I don't know if it would pick up a foam smell. If I put my nose really close to the foam I can slightly smell it but I don't find it obnoxious and can't imagine it leaving a bad smell on my herbie even if I stored it in there.

A lightning deal is just a one hour or one day deal. I did a lot of shopping over the holidays when there are typically really good prices. I picked mine up for $50 which was amazingly good. I think the typical price is around $67. I would not hold your breath waiting for it to come back to save 17 bucks if you want it. I had a slickdeals alert on "Pelican" for 9 months before it triggered during Xmas. I jumped on it and was worried the 1400 would be too small but I got everything in there I want. I'm thinking to expand the cutout (make it wider) that let's me pull the herbie out so I could stuff a small grinder in there if I really want to.

I'm late on the temp discussion, as I just now caught up on the thread but a few points:

IR devices are not the tool to use here. (For reasons stated and others.)

Whenever I get hands on a new vape to play with, I'll usually measure it right out for performance.

I will load a bowl with ABV and center the Thermocouple (TC) in the mass center. If you measure an empty bowl, you aren't accurately reflecting the usage it was designed for, and, most likely, won't get real numbers. (Added bonus to the TC is you can get it in areas where otherwise you wouldn't be able to get another device. This allows one to test in conditions that most closely resemble actual usage.)

It's been a year (or more??) since I last tested my Herbie, but the temp was pretty constant across standing and draw states. I certainly don't recall it being 10°F off, and I would think I would have noticed that. But then again, it is consistency one is really after, and reducing the temp fluctuations is what is important. I will ask the next chance I get about it intentionally being under-calibrated, but again consistency is more important (we know Herbie is a +/- 5°F anyway).

Thanks! Yeah I may have found the info eventually, but it did help to just have it listed at me (so busy I can barely keep up with the threads on here!). Also, well, it is nice to broadcast that I am considering selling :p .

On to your on topic point though, I actually got my herbie in the first place because while I had a Volcano, I was not willing to put an oil pad on that (it's perfectly easy to keep clean and spic and span on just flowers and I just didn't want to mess with it), but the Herbie had potential as an alt vape with smarter oil capabilities. I WAS able to get alright hits off my oil pad (I used the whip over bags), but I too wasn't getting a whole lot (and I maxed the temp out too, or near max), between that and my pad starting to actually leak out oil after a session (either on the screens, or on the paper towel when I took it out...the spreading black creep was alarming), I just was a little underwhelmed.

Anyway, mostly just weighing in, I could never quite get the bottom of how to make it better with oil (or, well, as good as I was hoping for).

I tested my herbie with a weber grill thermometer and it maxed out at 435. It was a cheap themometer so I don't know how accurate it is. Herbalizer also told me that the real temperature is actually 10 degrees lower. I thought that was weird because this vape is known for its precise temperature control. Also I could've sworn I saw somebody post that their temperature was within a degree of the set temperature.

Also, I have a question. Do you guys get good results using concentrates thru a water pipe or bubbler?

I did the same thing as eddiezheadiez and got a reading of 445. It wasn't with a weber grill thermometer but something similar. I have to say my unit has been working flawlessly since the day I got it. I was one of the first 50 to get one. I'm not sure if that made any difference or not but I'm guessing they took extra care in making sure the "early adopters" performed as advertised.

I also thought the possible temperature variation was only 5 degrees. A 10 degree differential is not a big deal to me, however, being that the Herbalizer has always been marketed as having "Precise Temperature Control" I can see how some might be disappointed. I'm with you Sticks, as long as I get top notch performance, full extraction, nice clouds and never combust... I'm good!! I love using my Herbalizer more than any other vape in my collection!!

The Herbalizer heats your favorite herbs and oils to within +/- 5°F (+/- 3°C), instantly.

Good enough for me....
