Underdog Log Vapes

My new-to-me/used Underdog. Purchased from local FC user, Higher than a Pterodactyl.
A beautiful Rustic Chinese Chico Pistache cut. So much character both visually and physically, feel that wood.

I received this piece with a new 14mm shorty gong, which is all I've used thus far, and I'm very happy with the 'roasting' capabilities. Less concentrated (than my Nylon MZap stems), and thus much less irritating. And I can get many hits, I'm 3, or 4? in now... ;)
I will be trying the custom 3-piece glass stem (w/ hemp filter, a piece by Alan/HI) next hit.
Also included was a nylon stem (w/ SS bowl) which I'm sure will be the most efficient, although noticeably larger than my MZ [brass] nylon stems.

The included Jameco PS is running at 12.27vDC. My old Jameco PS for my MZap is running at ~15vAC, looks like I need to find a new PSU for the MZ..

I'm a bit confused on the power supply situation. I've read somewhere that you want a vvps to change temps on a UD. On the website under faqs the vvps section notes they are reevaluating their offering on the website. I'm not sure what to make of that.

Does the UD come standard with a power supply? Edit 2: it was in the faq, it does come with a power supply.

Has anyone upgraded to a vvps? Was it worth it? Where did you buy it?

Edit: Would it be better for aromatherapy usage?

Just got mine this last week, yes it comes with a power supply no its not a VVPS, I haven't found myself wanting a VVPS much except on the final hit when I want to make sure the dog is running hot (I just wait 1-2 min)

The UD comes with a standard Wallwart plug type power supply, and will run fine using just that. A VVPS is for those who want to "fine tune" the temp they run their Dog at.

My advice is to use the power supply it comes with as many people find they don't need a VVPS. After you and your Dog know each other well you can then decide if you need one.

As to where to get them there are many sources available. I ordered mine off amazon, I know people have bought them off eBay, at their local hardware store. There is even an FC member who produces them.

I just received a beautiful small underdog. I tried it once and it runs very hot. I've read that some people leave theirs on all the time. Given how hot mine runs, I'm wary of leaving mine on very long because of safety. It would help if I could since the waiting time would be eliminated.
I'm getting a wong for it so that the stem will be cool but it's the ud itself that I'm concerned about.

How small is your Underdog? The smaller (and thinner) ones certainly will warm up much more quickly, but also tend to run hotter, and maybe don't work so well for 24/7 operation unless you have a good, safe, reliable vvps (variable voltage power supply - see my post above yours).

With a vvps, you can crank it down to say 9 volts and it will run much cooler, and then warm up quickly when you bump it up to starting (lowest level) vape range, which varies on the person and the vaporizer, but say, 11 volts? My Heat Island log vapes as low as 10.25, while my PodDog likes at least 11 volts. Some people like much higher voltages with their Dogs. You'd just have to mess around, maybe start at 11 and see what happens. The warm-up time is very short when keeping the UD ready, but not quite warm enough to vaporize or get the unit itself too warm.

But maybe your particular unit is just running hot. It happens. Got a pic of it?

It's sold out on the UD site but it looks like the others left for sale: it's 4" maple.

Hi little maggie- Normally, a 4" maple twig should be fine to leave on 24/7, but let's make sure. Is it just hot to the touch? Maple is a pretty dense hardwood, and so will retain heat more so than other woods. How long have you left it on attended? Does it seem to be charring or having a charred smell? Are you using the power supply that we supplied to run with it? (You can post the product number from the power supply and we can verify for you if you want).

Let's just make sure it's all in spec before you leave it unattended. :)

How much can strain impact cloud size/thickness and Abv-color?

I feel like the power is there - the dog is really pretty hot, but I think it's either my technique or strain that's not quite where it ought to be.

I've tried variations on how finely ground the material is, how close the screen is, how much I pack, etc (I've tried to read quite a bit on other people's related questions) and I still can't figure it out.

Since I haven't actually been home (visiting family out of state) I'm going to wait to buy a vvps until I get home and test my dog there but while I'm here for the next week or so I'd like to get a better grasp on what the problem is.The dog is quite effective, but I think I need to do some fine tuning. Only the first hit produces good vapor and I can't get the Abv as dark as I'd like it.

For me strain can make quite the difference. I've found that some strains, e.g. Willies Wonder, produce a good looking cloud for the first hit and wispy looking clouds for the 2nd & 3rd hit, whereas something like Sour Diesel creates huge clouds for 2 or 3 hits.

Though you may find that the same Dog will give different performance at different locations. I think it's a good idea to wait until you get home to the power source you'll be using all the time and test it out.

And while I can't vouch for the accuracy of my VVPS readout, I do know that different log vapes of mine have run at different voltages.

Maple Zap 14.25
Cherry Zap (RIP) 13.75
Hot Pod 13.25
Wychwood 13.25
Cherry Dog 12.8

As you can see my Dog is the runs at the lowest voltage and closest to what comes out of the wall. I originally bought my VVPS for my Cherry Zap which wasn't getting my ABV as dark as I like it.

So I got my last Christmas gift last night which was an envelope of cash :brow: I immediately had a couple vapes in mind, trying to stay in the $125-$175 range. I have NO IDEA why or how I ended up on the UD site late last night but the first thing that popped up was "December Clearance Sale"!
I've wanted a Dog for years so all other vapes left my mind and I was checking out within 5 mins. I had had a few drinks last night and I was so excited for the sale that at no point did I think to check this thread for codes for free shipping and FC goodies and whatnot. I don't drink often so I guess that's what I get for shopping while intoxicated:doh:.
Not too concerned because it's still an amazing deal for what I am sure is an amazing vape. The only reason I'm kicking myself today is for not adding a shorty GonG or NonG to my order. My Dog will be used w/ water about 90% of the time so I was wondering if anyone here had any opinions on long vs short GonG / GonG vs NonG. I'm leaning towards a NonG b/c from what I've been reading the nylon stems seem to hit a little harder but I just wonder if the shorty is worth it right now- I hate paying for shipping twice, especially if it's due to my own stupidity lol but I will if U smart people think it's worth it.
Needless to say tho I'm pumped for my new vape; I'll be sure to post some pics when it arrives! My Zap died about 4 months ago so I'm glad I'll have a log back in my life; there's seriously nothing like 'em. I have yet to regret a vape purchase and that is 100% b/c of FC and all U wonderful folks! I am already sure this one won't disappoint either :peace:

I left it on for several hours with some lavender oil in a cup and the wood got very warm but not so hot it burned. I'm using the equipment that came with the kit including the power supply. I've only had my vape for about a week.
The only problem I'm having is that when I use the UD with herbs in the straight stem the inside temperature is high and they char very quickly.

Thanks for the info. It might just be not great material that I've got my hands on down here.

The only reason I thought to by a vvps now is that my apartment can't handle much in terms of things being plugged in. The breaker blows if my SO has her hairdryer plugged in while the microwave is going.

Just thinking ahead here - if I buy this vvps I'll need the tattoo cord from UD and the extra $4 bypass plug, right?

Nope, no tattoo cord or bypass.. just the lab-style VVPS cord: http://underdogvapes.com/vape-accessories/electrical-accessories/lab-vvps-cord

Hi.

I received my underdog today. It is a great looking vape and as much as I want to love it, I don't yet. I read everywhere that it produces clouds and thick vapor. Mine gets no where near a cloud. Barely any vapor is being produced. I have let it warm up for over 4 hours, so that's not the issue. Anyone have advice? I'm already back to using my Buddha.

i had this problem a little while ago as well. for me i thought one of my UD's was running cold and just didn't use it that often. it wasn't until i took it back out to play a few months later did i realize that it wasn't running cold but was most likely the strain of material that i was using at the time. after using a different type of material and adjusting my pack, at the time i don't think i was packing enough and a firm enough bowl, i found that my UD was working great. however, this was just my own experience and yours may be different especially since you described the power situation in your apartment.

i bought the same Tekpower VVPS and the lab style VVPS cord from Dave which have proven to work for me over the years.

@radonn123 - how much are you packing in your stems? i find that packing about a pencil eraser size bowl is a solid amount to mess around with and get your draw technique down if technique is the case. i also gently tap the material very slightly with the end of a pen to help produce thicker clouds. you'll notice slightly more resistance on the draw but it might help to produce thicker vapor.

I too have had some strains that just didnt seem to produce thick clouds or really get very dark in a vaporizer. I always tried them in multiple vapes usually including my underdog because its one of my favorite vapes but just no thick clouds like I want. Those strains were always good and I always got high just the vapor wasnt thick, I guess I cant really complain if im getting high but you cloud chasers should understand.

Definitely. I find that a fine grind will darken fastest/best, but some strains just won't go past a tan or gold. Usually my stuff is dark like coffee but I'll get a bag here and there that won't go as far. As long as the goodies are extracted and effects are there I don't care.

I feel better now that so many people have reported that this is common - the strain variance. I figured it was the case, having ruled out so many other variables, but just wanted some confirmation since I've only been able to try this one particular strain on this vacation!

Nope, no tattoo cord or bypass.. just the lab-style VVPS cord: http://underdogvapes.com/vape-accessories/electrical-accessories/lab-vvps-cord

Thanks - noted!

Oh and a fire extinguisher for those flames.

edit - beat me to the punch(line)

Yeah... the flames are pretty hideous. Some reviewer on Amazon said he got an all black one... so I am praying to all the gods for that one if I order it.

That's good news, I'm happy to hear that you still like it. I was going through the backpages of this post and this model seemed to be a popular one. 5 or 6 of the UD FC people have it. And it's under $40 - can't beat that!

Personally I just ordered another tattoo supply that is the same style as the ones underdog used to sell. My first one lasted a little over a year of never being turned off and for $15 on ebay I consider that good value although you would have to buy the cord from underdog if you dont already have one like I do. I wish underdog would start making some again as I really do like the one they made that I use currently for both my logs. That lab style power supply sure looks nice for the price, I might have to get one of those soon for yet another backup supply .
