Arizer Solo

It's always sunny in Colorado
I think that's about it, in different terms than I'd use.....which is a good thing. One small quibble, however, I think you meant to say "....the battery is still used for heating..." or something like that? Of course it's always used while charging.

The point is two fold I think, with the battery being charged and discharged during 'charge while using' being the lesser problem? IMO a much bigger one is this leads to the average charge on the Solo being full (since the owners are most likely going to leave it charging after the session) rather than an average of maybe half charged in the normal charge/use/charge pattern we had before. This (keeping full charge) is a known killer of these type batteries. They can literally die waiting to be used. Which is why the come shipped and stored at about 2/3 charge (which is safe for years).

Avoiding full charge adds life to the battery.
life, keep the battery 'mid range' as much of the time as possible.

Alright, I contacted Arizer directly to clarify this issue with the Power Adapter and new Solos being able to be used while charging and here is their answer:

1st e-mail:
The Solo Power Adapter is designed and intended for use with older Solo units that cannot be used while charging. The Solo Power Adapter is compatible with newer Solo units that can be used while charging, but provides no added benefit, because the newer Solo units can also be used while charging with the standard charger. Use while charging is not bad for the battery.

2nd e-mail:
With new Solo units that can be used while charging, the unit uses as much voltage as required to heat, and any remaining voltage is used to trickle charge the battery. So if you're using the Solo Charger (12V) it will heat with up to 8.5V and the remaining 3.5+ volts trickle charges the battery. If you're using the Solo Power Adapter it will heat with up to 8.5V and any remaining voltage trickle charges the battery.

I too got the same answers as you. But the other way around. I emailed back when the new units came out and got the second answer you received. I had forgotten about that one. Thanks for the reminder. Never posted that reply as "extra voltage" being used to trickle charge made zero sense except to cause confusion.
I had emailed again last week and got the answer you got the first time.
Makes sense but we have had reports of using the old 8.5v supply while battery is fully charged, using very little battery until the charging circuit decides it time the battery requires charging. This particular observation is the only possible useful benefit for the old scheme supply for new Solo's. Also, on the negative, leads to the user tending to keep their batteries topped up all the time which is NOT good. More conformation for this is still required though. Maybe something Arizer never thought worth promoting? Hard to say. But pretty standard email responses. Interesting programming side effect but is it useful...?
Thanks again for reminding me of the first time I emailed. Thought I'd been down that road.

Thanks for forwarding the emails.

The first is, I think, somewhat accurate. "Provides no added benefit" is correct, I think, but it fails to mention that the old style PA will not completely charge the new units. Otherwise it's 'almost as good' as the charger supplied.

The second claims, "the unit uses as much voltage as required to heat, and any remaining voltage is used to trickle charge the battery" is absolutely wrong technically. It's not voltage, but current that's the factor. Big difference to those who know about such things. Since the delivered voltage doesn't change (like to your house), the power used depends on the current drawn (just like your house). Solo uses about 80% of the available power, when heating that's not enough so it discharges the battery for the remainder. When the heater cycles off again, it really doesn't shut down completely but continues to use a reduced amount of the power from the charger to heat, giving the remainder to the battery to recharge until the next (full power) heat cycle starts.

In practice this is done with a 'down converter' inside Solo that 'chops' the 12Volt, lower current to make lower voltage (but higher current) to charge the battery. Only one output, not "8.5V and the remaining 3.5+ volts trickle charges the battery". In practice, I think, it's reduced to the battery voltage since I think the new Solo is using the same scheme as Air, that is the battery is charged 'on one side' by the charger and discharged 'on the other' by the power demands for heating. Something like would happen if you put a trickle charger on your car battery and switched the headlights on and off.

But, from a technical standpoint "any remaining voltage is used to trickle charge the battery" is just plain wrong and to me indicates a guy who is intentionally or ignorantly 'blowing smoke'. It sounds OK unless you know what he's talking about.

Bottom line is the PA doesn't give PA operation with the new style, and as a charger isn't not going to do a complete job (but will take longer). IMO basically useless with the new version, the normal charger gives more features for less money. The PA is only a benefit with the old style.

Never posted that reply as "extra voltage" being used to trickle charge made zero sense except to cause confusion.

Hard to say. But pretty standard email responses.

Agreed both times. Sounds like a 'canned' response to me as well. And as Ollie North once famously said "at variance with the truth"?

I know this must have been mentioned many times in this thread, but should I do a few burn offs? I just purchased the newer solo from vape world. Do you guys suggest running it at the highest setting for 10 minutes a few times? Or is burn off unnecessary? Thanks for the input

One or two wouldn't hurt. You may end up doing it before using it anyways, sometimes the stems don't fit at first and heating it up and letting it sit for a bit will let the stems through. It gets easier after a few more sessions... if it's a problem at all. Lots of loose stems around here with the more experienced units.

As the Q man says it's like chicken soup, "can't hurt, might help"..... I think most folks do a run or two 'just in case'.

However, completely charge the unit first thing. Before you heat it the first time, even 'just testing'. Failing to do so can limit your battery capacity (sessions per charge) and lead to early failure. Charge it until the light stops flashing at the very least. 'Best advice' is to overcharge the first time (only), four hours past solid green, 'overnight' if possible/convenient. Just don't fail to completely charge it at least.

Appreciate the insight OF as usual. I am shocked I never purchased the most popular portable vaporizer out there. I always hear comparisons to the solo. Even though I have higher priced portables, I feel this will be the 'pound for pound' (substitute with dollar value) king, especially watching all the YouTube videos. Can't wait to try it out.

For concentrates, do people use cotton? Flavor must be great. I want to sip my concentrates, instead of dabbing off hot nail.

Thanks for the kind words, glad you're finding it useful.....that was the original idea.

And a bit of fun as the opportunity presents itself, of course.

I've no idea why it took me so long to catch on, let alone you, but I'm glad you're here as well. Neat machine, for sure. Very supportive of various techniques to fit individuals. Great tool for getting the good stuff from your stash. Effective and dependable. Many of us have backup Solos. Some of those of us have backup Solos for our backup Solos. Some of us are more hopeless (less hopeful?) than that. You're in good company.

Just don't loan Ataxian money or let him near your glass.

I think most owners use cotton. Some go for organically grown, hand picked, free range and other extremes, most just steal it from the aspirin bottle or tear the end off a q-tip is suspect. Some of us use fresh bud of a similar (or better still, same) strain. For a while I was very happy with some nice Sour Diesel CO2 oil on a bed of Sour Diesel bud......then the oil ran out. But it's all good.

When you first start out, be sure there's plenty of cotton or herb to absorb any melting, once 'burned on' the cup it's very hard to remove. When you get a feel for how your concentrate behaves you can modify it to suit, but playing it safe can prevent grief. Caution changing concentrates is also good I think, some get more 'runny' than others.

BTW, I'm a sipper too. IMO Solo really shines in such cases.

Regards, and thanks again.

You don't need as much cotton as you think you need, no need to stuff it unless you're trying to get something bigger than a pea. I make a little rectangle strip, apply in the middle of one half of it, and fold over. Or lay a bed of flower, add a little bit of oil, and then add some more flower to the top for a sandwich. I have a small wire mesh pad (can be bought on vape shop sites, "Volcano oil pad") that I add some concentrate to, but only when it's attached to water. The reason is so that no oil has a chance of dripping down. On my bubbler the Solo sits inverted so if oil drips it goes down the glass and not the stem. For dry oil use I would recommend the first two techniques. While I trust that the mesh pad will hold the concentrate in place, I think runnier concentrates may have a chance of liquefying and dripping down (due to the heater wrapping around and under the mesh). Not as big a chance with cotton since it's nowhere near as good at absorbing/holding heat as a mesh made of little tiny metal wires.

Waiting for it to charge properly before first use is going to just about kill me....

Yeah, but "that which does not kill us outright makes us stronger in the end". This too shall pass, all be it at a rate out of the Twilight Zone, but being good about this detail can save a bunch of second guessing later on. That is, months down the road you'll be enjoying your Solo without worrying 'should I have taken the extra time....'.

Perhaps a last chance to blaze before taking the pledge?

You buy vapes to use and enjoy, soon you'll be doing both.

Best wishes.

Perhaps a last chance to blaze before taking the pledge?

I've got the MFLB for the moment, and actually found some fresh(er) batteries which has helped.

I just accidentally stumbled back into this, as before I thought it was a waste of time. I smoked cigs heavy way back when I bought the launch box, so maybe that's why I didn't feel much?

Idk why it took this time, but I'm definitely going along with it. It's been about a week now, and I can honestly say this kicks ass. It's a different high, and although I'm happy with it; sometimes I get tard brain because of excess hits due to accidentally chasing the old rabbit.

Even when that happens though I don't get tired like before, and just feel a lot better than I expected health benefit wise; and I'm only about a week in! I'm very in tune with what my body tells me, and there's been a positive change for sure.

I imagine now I'll only smoke on rare occasion if I'm out with people, and it would be weird not to partake.
I'd be surprised if anything changes on that.

Still.....the mailman needs to fucking hurry up.

Cool. Sounds like you're home safe and dry then. I think a week is maybe average? Some guys go 2.

It does leave you with a different sort of problem: What are you going to do with the money you save on your weed bill? Seriously, numbers run 1/3, even 1/4 blazing levels. Not burning up your THC in some ill advised fire before it can get to you is a straight up waste.

One last thought, keep cool WRT to the postman. Don't get caught stalking, they're pretty jumpy to start with.......

Just used my solo for a week while away and such a great vape! First time really using without the bubbler and now I am a little more used to vaping found fine and actually easier to use (have to start at 6 for get much cloud with bubbler).

One thing I wanted to know was do many people do smaller loads? I am trying to use less and find the 0.1g which is a load full in chamber can make me a little too stoned. Not massively keen on doing load in two as start is so much better than the end.

I definitely do smaller loads. Especially if you're not gonna finely grind the material (or not grind the material at all), I find the smaller bits get toasted all the way through much better than bigger pieces/loads. If your small(er) session ends with you wanting more, you can always load more up.

Planetvape sells the PVHE stems with the shorty stem. It's a smaller bowl for the Solo.

Lately I just buy the shorty stems.

I like the stocks stems too. You don't really need better airflow with the newer model Solo. The PVHE stems are made with a thicker glass it seems like. The smaller bowl makes it's so you use less product.

Whatever way you decide is the right way. I too like to grind my herb to between a medium and fine grind.

I like temp 4 then go up to 5 towards the end of my session. The low temps work great too.

Best of all the Solo produces thick velvety vapor and awesome taste from your herb. The Solo is an excellent investment in your health and pocketbook.

Why not take the Exact Solo design..and make it 3 times the size with more power as a desktop version...The Solo is one of the best if not the best portable vape and people say it can compete with desktop vapes...why not beef up a Solo and make the perfect desktop vape? I know they have the EQ..i own it...but i think a giant Solo might be amazing

A Solo the size of the EQ with a whip...is what im getting at

Edit: the EQ is dope and i know they designed it that way for a reason...i just think they really hit the nail on the head with the Solo maybe replicating the design of it in desktop form would be a gamechanger

I guess I'll have to start diving into concentrates then. Screw saving my money like a normal person.

As far as stalking the mail carrier......They're already used to that from my other packs coming here, and there.

No order of protection though, so......That's good.
