Because nothing bad happens if the herb does touch the metal base of the heater, except for some extra browning possibly. And if it does bother the user, it is as easy as adding a second screen sandwiching the herb in. Then they don't need to worry about sourcing/supplying specialized screens/bullets, you can just use a standard pipe screen. But it also allows the option for an all-glass vapor path.

So the only purpose of hamster mode is to "glue" the weed to the glass bowl?
I heard about this technique from this thread where the guy talks about how he gets more vapor clouds with solo upside down:

I don't think it works that way, I mean sure heat rises but the heater is also around the sides AND bottom of the stem. The whole loading section of the stem is heated outside and to a degree from the bottom. If you want the most convection possible, you would remove the stem after every hit and let it cool down a bit, then insert to use. I haven't noticed any more or less convection, and I go between using it on water (sitting inverted) and dry (stem stays in, right side up) throughout the day. I think the grasscity OP's eureka moment was leaving the stem in for a bit before drawing on it to let the stem heat saturate (or to help remove moisture content if that was his case).

If it works and you like it, who cares?

It's also a fashion statement of a sort.....or maybe 'rite of passage' is closer?

As far as more vapor clouds, you sure couldn't prove it by me. I tend to sip on a load until it's spent, and while I can see how a guy might get less I sure can't see how he could get more.

In actual practice the herb touches metal very lightly if at all. Most guys have the stem clear of the bottom by tipping or lifting it anyway, even if the load didn't also shrink back that alone would prevent contact. IMO for practical purposes the air passes the same inverted, gravity doesn't pay a big factor.

It may work different over on Grass City of course. BBut there's a really easy way to resolve it in the only conditions that really matter........yours. Try it both ways and see. Try if several times if you're not sure the first time.

Having used both systems, IMO the stem system Solo uses is superior. In several important ways. Taste is potentially better, not only is there no metal in the vapor path, but the glass stays cleaner and therefore the taste 'cleaner'. It's easier to get the stem in and out than the cartridge. No need to wait for it to cool. You can hold it by the cold end clean the stem and reload in under 30 seconds so a preloaded stem can be done there's usually no need. Carts would also make for more complex (and often expensive) overall unit I think.

If you want to look at it, you can consider the Air stems (especially the short one) as basically doing this, you can get a couple and a couple travel caps to go on them and forge on. I found trying to carry a loaded cartridge for the Pinnacle to be a PITA until I lucked on a small plastic bottle.

Nothing to prevent you or anyone from doing it. I bet you could even use the Pinnacle cart inside a modified version of Ed's wood stem. I'll give you even money you're back to the normal stems in less than say 25 sessions?

My biggest issue with the Air is also the airflow because I'm also coming from a vaporizer with no restriction (herbalizer).

I have been using the shortest stem exclusively, packing loose and often. I found lifting the stem makes really wispy, unsatisfying hits.

One thing that helped me was hitting it by myself in silence so I could hear the airflow and I think it gave me a better feel for how it's supposed to work, with longer, slower draws.

Still learning though :)

Interesting video, lots of choppy editing of the sort we seldom see. Lots of 'model poses' which is OK I guess if the content is there? I take some exceptions to "smoke cartridges", all the "buttons" not on mine (like the one on the back where you plug the charger in, or the green one on the front I'm still looking for), the "additional glass tube" (the Solo stem, which she seems to have seen for the first time?), and I can get past her advice that steps 4 and 5 are 'useless for vaping' (sure to be a disappointment to those enjoying 'big clouds' on their WTs using this technique).

However, I think I just saw her recommending dropping shatter bare into the oven (no bed of bud or cotton)? I sure hope nobody tries that and fouls their cup or has it run down one of the vent holes......

Nice to look at, but perhaps best viewed with the audio muted?

When push comes to shove, I don't think Linda has much competition here.......

I have been seeing a lot of unboxing videos where people are getting 2 kinds of stems with the air, one kind with the plastic tip and then another which looks identical to the solo but much shorter.

I always though it was 2 with plastic tips one a bit longer than the other?

hello, fellow vapor enthusiasts!

I decided to get myself a vaporizer a couple weeks ago, and I hadn't partaken in herbal delights in quite some time. Gave myself a crash course in vaporizer tech and crammed a bunch of research in. Picked it up a few days ago and have been using it ever since, and holy mother of God, this thing is brilliant. This may be my first vaporizer, but I am thoroughly impressed.

Had to trim down my review that follows. Really shouldn't have submitted that to Toronto Vaporizer. If it's too long for here, it's WAAAAAY too long for there.

I went for quality and price. Far as I'm concerned, if I bought a cheaper one that didn't suit my needs, I'd just have to go out and buy a fancier one. The following factors were considered:

- Vapor quality (smooth, cool, not burnt? Had to trust reviews, no "try before you buy" availability I could readily find from glancing at a few "vape cafes" in Toronto.)

- Discreetness / Portability (can it easily be stored / stashed? can I walk around with it in my pocket easily?)

- Serviceability (friend had an old Solo he swore by, but had battery issues. Might've been the 2012 / 2013 model. I wanted to be able to easily replace the batteries and tubing.)

- Price (Dollars saved is dollars still in your wallet! If I have a warranty claim, I can afford to go out and buy another vaporizer after a year and a half or so while the other one is getting serviced and it won't hurt too much, depending on purchase price.)

I had NO idea how tiny the Crafty (or even the Solo) really is! For me at least, it's really hard to make the connection between pictures and reading about the size of something, and seeing / handling it in person. To give you an idea of how big the Arizer Air is with the stem in, if you go to a convenience store and pick up a roll of mints (Mentos) or hold three of the thinner art style tip Sharpie markers together... The Arizer Air is about an inch longer than the roll of mints, and actually a bit thinner than the fistful of three markers. It's super slim and you can literally fit it in a pocket without the stem. It's smaller than the mini MagLite flashlight I have around here somewhere.

The Air takes very little time to heat up at all (about a minute to the lowest temperature if you've stored your Air around 20+ Celsius). The lowest temperature setting is really nice, as the vapor tastes really good and is cool enough that I can inhale slowly through the stem for 15+ seconds without feeling like my throat is getting toasted. The draw resistance on the stems is fantastic. I used the smaller one without a screen at first and got some bits in my mouth.

Got it from Toronto Vaporizer. Free grinder is better than the $15 four piece I already owned of similar design, and the customer service there was very good. (Able to pick up same day, even when running late due to work and traffic.)

Anyway, the Arizer Air is a great unit. It heats up quick, cools off similarly quickly, is easy to clean (I'm doing the hot chocolate straw trick right now, and it's fantastic), works like a charm, and has swappable batteries. It's stupid easy to use (I'm a noob), and even if you don't pack the chamber perfectly, it doesn't matter. Pick a temperature and away you go. Swap the battery if you've drained one entirely (they don't last super long).

I've been enjoying it so much, I hadn't even unpacked the rest of the box til now. There's another stem I haven't even used (a super long one, like the Arizer Air?), a belt carrying case thing for the unit plus portable stems, and the famous "vape condom" sleeve. (It's a silicone? neoprene? rubber? idfk -- sleeve thing that gives it some added protection if you drop it on concrete like a spaz).

Just tried out the long stem and vape condom combo. I remain impressed and super excited to invest in a good bubbler / whip combo at my convenience.

Pretty sure that's the review verbatim. Forgot to mention auto shutoff timer. It's great. 10 minutes is perfect. Was gonna list my thoughts on other vapes, but I just realized how ridiculous that would be, considering that I haven't even tried them. Shame there is no "try before you buy" option.

I think the long stem option is soooo much better. I can pack less and keep it farther away from the element. I think I may have combusted some in the unit (or it's just really toasty) at high temperatures with tight pack plus a screen. This is the first time I'm trying the long stem with no screen, and it tastes so good, it's unreasonable. First impression though, and I am pretty ripped.

I'm referring to the Sarah video above: The higher settings for the potpourri? Setting 1 for shatter? With her gestures and the way she was putting on the silicone protector "for your unit" and watching her slip it on it reminds me of what a condom commercial might look like.

She needed to bone up in the product that she was trying to review. A very pretty model. I don't know if I trust her judgement.

Seems as if that sight doesn't have much knowledge of vapes other than selling them.

I ordered mine on Black Friday sale and got two with plastic mouthpieces (one longer than the other) and a regular long glass stem(like for the Solo).

A week or so back I posted getting such a glass stem instead of the longer plastic top version, I believe the first such report? It was my second Air, a gift for the Brother in Law. No straight Solo stem like the first one. My guess then was it was the new configuration, AFAIK it still is the case?

That is folks getting theirs in the last few days have had a short all glass stem and a slightly shorter plastic topped one? It's worth noting it's not a 'shorter Solo stem' but a modified Air stem. It has the same small holes and improved tooling/shape.

I think it would be wise to stay clear away from buying the Air above through EBay. It looks like your warranty wouldn't work. They aren't an authorized vendor I would imagine. If something happens you are out the money unless Arizer takes pity on you. It's buyer beware in this instance.

Not much saved if you lose out in the end.

Actually no it doesn't. It says " Used twice. Vaporizer is in excellent like new condition." HUGE difference.

No way it could be a vendor yet, right? Not released until sometime next year, Arizer is the only current source? IMO this is a private party, who for whatever reason is looking to sell their 'nearly new' unit?

The warranty could well be an issue, like similar cases before. You'd need to read carefully, perhaps check with the maker and perhaps need to 'go through' the original owner?

Or get a new one with no such 'baggage'?
