Texas to Consider Marijuana Decriminalization

Dec 16, 2014
Recreational Marijuana

On Monday, a bill was introduced by Texas State Representative Joe Moody that intends to reduce state penalties for low-level marijuana possession by adults.

The proposed bill would remove the threat of arrest, jail time, and a criminal record for individuals caught with up to one ounce of marijuana. The penalties would be replaced with a civil fine of $100.

Currently in Texas, anyone caught with under two ounce of marijuana can be arrested and given a criminal record. They can receive up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $2,000.

According to the FBI, there were 72,150 arrests or citations for marijuana-related offenses in Texas in 2012, 97% of which were for simple possession. That same year, nearly 90% of all burglaries — including home invasions — and 88% of all motor vehicle thefts went unsolved.

“Our current marijuana policy in Texas just isn’t working,” Rep. Moody said. “We need a new approach that allows us to more effectively utilize our limited criminal justice resources. This legislation is a much-needed step in the right direction.”

If the bill passes, Texas will join 19 other states that have lowered the penalties for low-level marijuana possession.

Whoa, that would be great! I know even Perry said something to the effect of he wasn't opposed to decriminalization, just legalization. Anything is a step in the right direction.

The worst part of legalizing marijuana in Texas is getting past this guy.

Well Perry has on the record said he supports state's right's to legalize and he has multiple times said he supports decriminalization...

Not that anyone should think that means he actually supports it or isn't the common type of dishonest politician looking out for himself who picks sides on what will get him elected, but it is still very refreshing to see stuff like this. I'm might be being too optimistic but there may be some hope in Perry not acting how people instantly assume someone of his stereotype would in regards to legal Marijuana.

It seems most likely though that he recognizes the young demographic and is changing his positions/platform to reflect that with him saying stuff like this now, especially when one looks at his new hip thick-rimmed glasses and him having gone on the Jimmy Kimmel show to talk about his support for decriminalization (in which he was booed at heavily by the crowd as he walked on prior to the interview; i'm assuming most of them had no idea he even was open about decriminalization before he started talking). To me it just seems he is obviously taking notice of the shifting opinions and the importance of gaining the support of demographics that support positive marijuana reform while hes most likely preparing for a 2016 Presidential run.

Even in his farewell speech for his position as Governor from a few days ago he was speaking in a more than obvious moderate tone and was urging for an end to blindly sticking to ideological beliefs and preventing Texas from progressing forward.
