What's the issue with too much ABV in caps/food?

I've seen lots of comments here and elsewhere warning that using too much ABV can be a very unpleasant experience for nearly six hours, but I'm not clear on what kind of unpleasant? Is it that you feel too stoned? Nauseaus or dizzy? Blah? Paranoid? Something else?

I would much rather overdose on ABV than on regular unvaped greens.

Too much of the green stuff makes me feel like I'm going crazy!

Too much of the brown stuff just puts me too sleep. The biggest danger of eating too much ABV (IMHO, and assuming you aren't doing anything stupid like driving a car or operating heavy equipment) is simply that it will increase your tolerance.

Note however that I am sensible: I use a scale and keep a log of my doses, so I don't accidentally eat way too much! ;)

First off, you really don't want to know first hand how rough of a trip too much can be - ABV or green or mixed. Imagine being so stoned that it feels like a bad flu bug (tho without the puke and liquid shits).

Fortunately I haven't taken so much as to be nearly catatonic, but I have seen it. Not pretty! I have had a bit too much and it can be pretty rough.

Usually I make butter or oil and cook with it. This helps with dosing because all of that batch will be same potency. I usually put about 1/2 teaspoon on a toasted bagel for a test run. Eat that, and try to gauge the strength. Then I use the results to figure how much to put in cookies, brownies, on pasta, whatever.

Be careful with your low tolerance friends! I try to make my cookies so that 2 are a good buzz, 3 is a serious stoning for 5 - 6 hours and 4 of them is blotto. But, this is for me and stoner friends. Have had friends who smoke/vape about once a month and 1/2 cookie will take them to the same place it takes me 3 to get to. A person's size/weight and metabolism plays a role, too.

I gave a friend a brownie who used to smoke but hadn't for about a year. I was eating 4 (2 then 1 after 1 hour and another after 2nd hour) of the same size for a good happy all day out and about buzz (hiking/fishing/movies/whatever - stoned but pretty much able to function for 6 - 8 hours). He decided not to eat it and gave to his wife a couple weeks later. She and 2 of her friends split it. They're all pretty healthy (120 to 140 pounds), and haven't used any weed at all in years. The 3 of them were so ripped they were ready to go to the hospital because they thought they were ODing. Thankfully, they had the good sense to call me instead of an ambulance. Took me a while to get them all chilled out, but they survived fine. They also have all sworn off any weed for the rest of their lives (and any of my baked goods, spiked or not)! But, consider the math here. I do have tolerance, but not really that much compared to many here on FC. They each had about 1/12th of what I'd use for a good full day buzz and were sure they needed medical attention. So sure they were ready to "turn themselves in", no matter what the consequences.

Too much will usually put you to sleep.... eventually it will in my experience. But, the hour or 2 before sleep can be nasty. Your stomach will do flip flops, a weird edginess can come on and not leave, headaches, etc - and the paranoia can be crazy strong. It is not the same as smoking or vaping too much in one sitting. That can be rough too, but nothing like too much to eat. And the worst part is, that unlike vaping/smoking if you get too much you can't just stop and try to chill out. Once you ingest it, you're going to be on that road for a while with no offramp unless you can sleep, and no guarantees you'll sleep all the way through it.

Start small and be careful. Give it at least an hour to kick in, sometimes 1 1/2 hours to get to full tilt. You can always add a little more to top off.

About to buy caps and start very small...do not want to feel any of those bad side effects...I once underestimated the strength of vaped weed, put 26 grams into 10 brownie, and got way too high..its been a few years since then and ive had a few good edible experiences...going to take ONE PILL AND WAIT, then take a second...if its not much ill start with 2 pills next time...sound legit?

ExtremeLou, it totally depends how strong the caps are! You could make a cap that is much too strong, or much too weak, or just right. :)
Im going to post a picture of my ABV later to see if you guys think its gunna be strong...i think it will be...one or two pills should atleast give me an idea of how much i prefer

I don't think you understand what I am saying... I am saying that you should weigh the amount of material you are using to calculate your dosage. If you make your caps with twice as much material then they will be twice as strong. Eyeballing the dose for edibles is seldom a good idea, trust me! ;)

Good call...yeah I think the color of the vape and amount in each cap are big factors...what size capsule do you use and how mich ABv in each. Im about to go to the store today and grab some empty caps...500mg?

I've actually never made ABV caps, sorry.

When I make coconut oil canna-caps, I use NBV (non-vaped or green herb) and usually put 50mg per capsule (so 20 capsules per gram). This is a pleasantly weak everyday dose for me, and I usually take several over the course of a day. I use the '00' sized caps which have a capacity of just under 1ml.

For ABV edibles, which I make all the time, I find that for me and my tolerance (your mileage may vary) I use between 0.1 and 1 gram of ABV per serving.

Color of ABV is only one part of the equation. Strength of original product, IME , comes into play as well.

I've had darker brown ABV from some Top Shelf, that in terms of effect, blew the doors off some light ABV from Mids.

Thats difinitley another factor good call...well i guess im going to experiment..im a lil nervous from reading all the bad experiences so im goingg to start super low maybe like .5 (that might be two caps im assuming)

:)

If you have a vaporizer that has adustable temperatures, you may wish to experiment with small quantities of the same strain and various temperatures to see what effects you can gain vaporizing at a specific max temp and how strong it leaves the ABV.

I've done this with strains I regularly pick up and find...

Vaping my herbs to a max of 200C leaves pretty potent couch lock effects and still gives that punch between the eyes (cerebral)...

While vaping to 230C max leaves the couch lock... but has no "Punch"...

Also, since I use same grinder for all products, found that 1/4 TBSP gives mild effects for 4-6 hours.... and 1/2 gives much stronger results for 5-8 hours...

Individual results may vary.

0.5g of ABV is not a "super low" dose in my opinion. I think I mentioned above my "standard unit" for edibles is 0.05g. Good luck and let us know how it goes! :)

Good stuff...i vape my weed at 165....then throw it all in a container...than vape THAT at 200..and thats what Ill use for caps...so according to you thas some couch lock and it packs a punch

Im going to take 1/4 tbs and wiegh it out! Now im getting a better idea of where to start thanks for the input errbody

Puddle, you said .01 to 1.0 so i was still a little confused...thats a large range..your right ill prob start lower than .5

You may also want to take all the abv you have now and put it aside (not add any new), Then mix that up well before starting. This will increase the chance that your abv will be pretty much the same all the way through, so you'll have a better idea what you are working with once you figure out your dosage. If you keep adding to the abv, and using it for caps, the buzz in your dose could change with different strains, temps, etc. Then when you run out and have a new batch of abv, just double check your dosage and adjust as needed.

I don't do caps either, but have been surprised in the difference of one batch of abv in butter/oil to the next. It may look, smell and feel the same, but hit you very differently than a previous or later batch.

Too much ABV in the edibles can cause a feeling of being conscious of every breath. Hearing every heartbeat. Feeling sick to your stomach unable to drive or think with any kind of reason. You feel like you can't move. It's a very paranoid feeling. It could last longer than 6 hours. You are better off going to sleep, if you can. I had too much on a Sunday afternoon and the next morning I still felt stoned.

Panic, I had to go to work! I felt too medicated to drive even the next morning. I still felt very fuzzy headed. I didn't want to try edibles for a long time after that. I don't want to scare anybody but you need to be careful even with ABV.

How would eating abv raise your tolerance, I assume you mean vaping ?

There are many different tolerances regarding bud. You can smoke it ,you can vape it, you can eat it each one has a different tolerance. If you eat a bunch of abv your tolerance wil go up in that area alone.

I believe you, if you're saying that was your personal experience. Scientifically, that doesn't make any sense to me that our brains have separate tolerances for smoked THC vs vaped THC vs eaten THC. ;)

Not sure why you would think this. And sorry, but seems pretty obvious you're not speaking from experience - at least not very much of it.

It may vary a little from method to method, but if you have a high tolerance from one, that tolerance is going to extend to other ways of getting it into your system. There are different components/actives that can be more pronounced with one method than another (and some you won't experience with vaping), but saying tolerances depending upon method are unrelated is just bunk. OR, could be that you are just different than the couple hundred people I've imbibed with over the past 35+ years, and everyone else who has commented on such things on FC.

Not saying you are a liar, or that you didn't notice something different personally. Just that this would be very odd, and I think (if you are speaking from experience) that there may have been other variables at play. Anyone I know, or know of, that has been using edibles on a fairly regular basis (even once a week for a couple weeks), will find themselves smoking or vaping more to get to where they would before using the edibles.
