If I get an extract of unknown providence, and plan on using ejmix in a mPT3, is it required to winterize it first (or any guidelines on whether I need to)? I plan in the future to do my own extractions, but I don't really want to have to add EC and then evap it back off if I don't need to. Or can you winterize it in the ejmix? Would waxes still precipitate out at 0F? If .5g through a brand new atomizer is likely to be OK, and when it does clog, I can recover everything, then I want to skip the extra day or two prepping. I've been reading everything I can find on here for the last couple weeks trying to figure out how I want to handle making concentrates, but this short-circuit of getting already in an oil form confuses me. I'll try and winterize most of it, but don't really relish the idea of waiting longer to experience vaping it.

I need help. I want to start making some concentrates (small batches for personal use). My friend grows and is very generous to me. I see these extractors with glass tubes, filters, etc. I'm not sure if I want to use butane? I will be doing everything outdoors. I'm a responsible adult but am cautious about flammables. Are there any threads or advice you can give me. Like everyone else, I would love to make some good shatter.

Butane, everclear, alcohol? What are differences and benefits? If you don't want to type because it has been asked a million times, please let me know what thread I can read thru. I tried looking thru different threads.

There is already a wealth of info on here read back and use the thread specific search. They are all pretty different in their own respects. Look for QWET/QWKX QWISO and BHO

I think that availability of the solvent for a reasonable price is key to chossing your solvent.
Here in NL it is difficult to get refined butane and because of taxation any "pure" ethanol is also not affordable. Do not be temped by "rubbing alcolhol", this always has nasty additives. For me the only real choice is ISO as I can get 99% ISO for €12 /litre.

But I like it!
Hopefully this is a good place to post this as it will be used for concentrates... We just went to Costco, where my wife came back from the pharmacy with a 4pack of 500ml bottles of 99% ISO. It was $8.00. The only ingredient listed is ISO 99%, and it also says 'for external use only'. Will this be OK to use as a solvent? Or is there something special i should be looking for? I've been using 96% Everclear to date.

I did 2 runs yesterday. 12.6g of Sour Purple Diesel yielded 4.1g=32.5%. 8.8g of Lemon Diesel yielded 1.9g= 21.6%. This stuff is so potent! It seems like every time I do a dab I end up comatose.

I am sure you have mentioned it before but what technique are you using? Is this BHO or QWISO/QWET?

I would love to be able to get the returns you do. I process quality buds and get between 10-15% return which I am quite pleased with until I see your returns and the beautiful colour of your your results!

Any secrets you can let us in on?

Cheers

I do BHO extraction. I try to use excellent starting material. I use a 25 micron filter on my tube with several coarser screens inside. I freeze everything. Frozen butane allows for a slower extraction. Not so much a blast, more of a wash.
I cannot stress enough:

I would like to try a BHO run. I live in NL, does anyone have any suggestions what a good source (label) of butane is in NL?

DrRishi,
I use(d) Colibri, but i can only get the little 90 ml. cans here,so if you're doing a big run, they might be a bit too much work.
All the brands available at the chemists however do leave an unpleasant aftertaste i have found in the past.

For your own and safety and those of others please always do remember the 3 major rules about making BHO :

1. Do it outside!
2. Do it outside!

Don't worry I will do it outside.

I can get Colibri 300ml cans from Apollyon (€3,95). I won't be doing any real big runs. Currently I do 15gram runs with QWISO but my cheap source of ISO seems to have dried up. I am back to paying nearly €50 for 5L.

Do you guys use vacuum to drive off all the butane or simply leave it in a hot water bath for an extended period?

DrRishi,
I actually don't do butane runs anymore since i discovered ethanol which can make me perfectly dabbable concentrates. :p
That's indeed not cheap too,as i pay about 25,- a liter for 99.8% pure ethanol(as a startingpoint, every time air gets in,the relative watercontent will increase),still very much though worth it IMO.
Never used vacuum myself, but if making BHO these days i would probably try for it.

The Colibri deal sounds quite good actually(if you vist the store(not sure if they can ship these?)say hi to Petra for me,she's an old friend from school ;)),also i see they now have the Newport too, which is also often recommended for BHO,i have however never used that myself,so i can't judge that.

What does it mean, if you have an alcohol extracted oil, very sticky, looks dark when in container, but is a light green when spread thin?

It most likely means there is chlorophyll in the extraction. Maybe from extended soak times.

It's strong and tasty, but does having chlorophyll in it have any negative effects? Or is it just that it could be better?

Magic9,
^I've never heard anybody wanting chlorophyl in their dabbing products, for ingestion of edibles/tinctures/oil it would be another matter of course, sure you didn't mean that?
Besides the residue it only adds a bitter unpleasant taste as far as i know.
It is indeed ususally responsible for any green colouration, generally it's the shorter the soak time the clearer the concentrate.

If its an alcohol extraction then it says to me that your material has been exposed to the alcohol for too long or the materials were not cold enough.
I try and avoid any green by having everything very cold and washing for 30 seconds (ISO) or less.

When I have washed the liquid is yellow/amber (very light) in colour, not green.
