I must say that I am absolutely loving my MB so far. I've put a half pound through it so far and it's preformed great. But I must say this last weekend I made my favorite thing of all time! Actually potent canna caps. I put 2 zips in the minimum amount of coconut oil I could use to make it run, then filtered it out and did another run with 2 more ounces. Made ~560 pills total, 2 gets me a great energetic buzz, 3 gets me a solid stone for work, and 4 will absolutely knock me on my ass. For the first time in my life I was too high to sleep after taking 6 as a test.

I've been handing them out to a bunch of coworkers and most of them get extremely stoned off of 2 of them, only one coworker has been willing to try 3. 6-8 in a day is keeping me stoned enough that I only vape 2 small air bowls some days... And I'm a medical patient for pain. This is my new favorite!

glad to see your success.

what recipe did you use? did you use lecithin? so, you used 4 ounces of plant total?

DorianGray,

Yup used 1.5 tablespoons of lecithin. Just did 160 degrees for 2 hours, 2 separate times. Using 4 ounces of flower total
Then filled empty capsules with the wife... Tasting some of this coconut oil may have made the pill filling process a little nicer;)

I will read the full thread soon, but I don't have time yet and I am too excited, so please forgive me for asking something that has probably already been answered dozens of times.

How does this work with entirely AVB? I found out I am getting one of these for the Holidays, and I also have at least 4oz of AVB just waiting to be used. Have any of you figured out any tips not included with the instructions/directions? I will definitely post up my results once I have it in my hands.

Hey All
been a while since Ive visited the site ,let alone the thread.

Ive been experimenting and found that running 160 degree temp prompt for ...ready? AWEEK has made the world of difference. I saved the plant matter in the past because it was potent still and that was after really pressing the crap out of it to extract all actives. The longer cook times have extracted to the point that it has been totally leeched
Well now the plant matter was tested after a week of slow steeping at the lowest temp w/coconut oil and it didnt get you buzzed at all. I used 2 oz of MJ for 24 oz of coconut oil ( cup and a half per oz) and knowing the old school stories Im told of peeps just partying for days with a good amount of crock pots just stirring away and just taking their time. The method would produce nuclear strength oil and I figured since the MB 2 is a techy crockpot I put the method to test and BINGO it worked. The oil is good at a 1/2 tsp for a nice comfy buzz with out the sides of OD.One thing I do not care for is getting too stoned where its basically nauseous and very Thorazine like effect. Great if your battling CA or any other deadly disease, but that part of life for me is no longer an issue. Note I have high tolerance and really need a T break soon, but still got good and high on that small amount. I know some of you may say AWEEK? but what the hey,it worked like a charm and this is my strongest oil to date and got tired of all the sugar with baking cookies and brownies, etc.I might note, no burning at 160 for coco/oil and the oil was still green as the green giants blood! indicating no burn. I would imagine you could pass on the lecithin if you wanted with a very long slow cook. Walter White might have been procuring baby blue ice but i got em beat with green goblin oil:science:

I put the lecithin in on the last hour of the final cook, let it all settle for a while,(6 hrs) took a turkey baster and removed most of the cleaner oil and continued pressing out the small amount of oil left in the plant matter (slurry), this method for me is so much easier than trying to filter out the whole amount thru the ridiculous little 90 mic bag. I have some bubble bags and use the 45 mic bag for the slurry and small amount of oil left in it, seems to work better than the one supplied.

Happy Holidays to all and wish a healthy, happy and safe to all.

My MB machine came about a month ago and I made a batch of coconut oil with 1 oz of mixed mid-grade buds to 14 oz. of oil. It came out nicely but it took a bit more than a teaspoon of oil for a decent medicated effect and the effect wasn't quite what I had hoped.

My girlfriend has a lot of wrist pain from surgery and needed something she could take and still function well at work. I decided to make her some Candy Jack coconut oil.

Candy Jack is one of her favorites and for good reason. Our local dispensary has theirs tested at 27% THC and .2% CBD! It's top shelf bud usually priced at $220/oz (and well worth it), but they were running a sale for $170/oz so it was a no brainer to go with 2 oz.

IMG_9808.jpg

Once I got it home, I decided to use just a little less than 2 oz in 2 cups of coconut oil to make the math work out a bit cleaner.

IMG_9812.jpg

Each 1 teaspoon dose contains:

.5 gm of cannabis
.135 mg of THC

Ingredients:

16 oz Coconut Oil
48 gm Candy Jack - Sativa 80% (Tested: THC 27% - CBD 0.2%)

Concentration:

3 gm per oz of oil
.5 gm per teaspoon of oil

Process:

1. Decarb unground cannabis in foil packet in oven at 240 for 45 minutes

IMG_9814.jpg

IMG_9820.jpg

2. Put 16 oz jar of coconut oil in MB machine and heat on 160 for ~10 minutes to melt oil.

IMG_9817.jpg

3. Pour melted oil into measuring cup for exact measure to 16 oz...then pour back into MB. This wouldn't seem necessary with a 16 oz jar of coconut oil but it is. My "16 oz jar" measured only 14 liquid oz in the measuring cup.

IMG_9819.jpg

4. Put decarbed Candy Jack in MB machine along with melted oil and run a 1 hour cycle at 220.

IMG_9822.jpg

5. At the end of first cycle, reset machine and run another cycle at 160 for 4 hours.

6. Strain and enjoy!

This oil came out much stronger than the first batch and 1 teaspoon of the Candy Jack Oil is a pretty strong dose, even for someone with a 1.3gm/day tolerance. It is exceptionally clean and retains that sweet Candy Jack taste, which happens to go very well with coconut oil.

That Candy Jack taste also goes well with hot beverages like coffee, hot cocoa or chai. I make it for my girlfriend with about 6 oz of soy milk and 2 tablespoons of hot cocoa mix.

I heat the soy milk on the stove until warm. Then I put it in the blender with a teaspoon of Candy Jack Oil and 2 tablespoons of hot cocoa and blend for 15-20 seconds. That gives it a foamy "crema" on top and completely homogenizes the medicated oil in the hot beverage.

I've made this and let it cool in the refrigerator for up to several hours so far and it has never separated. I put it in a little 8 oz glass bottle for my girlfriend and she grabs it when she's in pain. She says it always starts to give relief in 10-15 minutes.

I've been working with cannabis oil dosing in hot drinks like this for a month or so now. IMO it's one of the easiest and tastiest ways to tailor your dose accurately every time with minimal hassle and a lot of flavor flexibility. Plus you get that healthy dose of coconut oil every time!

thanks for your post and documentation.

would you say that your latest batch is stronger because you used 2oz instead of 1oz as your did before, or could there be any other reason its stronger?

also, you did not use any lecithin, right?

Yes, increasing the amount of bud definitely made it stronger. The first batch I had a ratio of 2gm of bud per ounce of oil. The batch I described above included 50% more bud for a total of 3gm of bud per ounce of oil.

I didn't use lecithin as I prefer a purer oil.

I use it with pure AVB runs frequently. I did one that was wayyyyy too strong for everyone, it just knocked everyone asleep, (and almost accidentally killed a couple of nice dogs), so I've had to experiment with different doses to get a comfortable strength.

I find an oz of ABV to 1 LB of butter, (which is 2 cups or 4 sticks) with 2 tbs of lecithin on the butter setting at 160 works fine. I end up with about 1.5 cups which is enough for a double batch of ginger snaps. The ginger compliments the herb taste well :)

I get about 70 cookies from this. Bake a dozen immediately and then stick the rest in the freezer in a Baggie until I need more. I suggest those not used to it start with half a cookie, which is hard to do when they taste so good. A whole cookie does most people nicely, and 2 cookies makes me happy, for a few hours.

A note of caution: Always mark your special treat containers with clear warnings!!

Has anybody seen any holiday sales on MB2e?
Well, hearing nothing, I went ahead and pulled the trigger (using a popular $30-off coupon code). I did notice that my order confirmation says MB2 (not MB2e, the latest version) - Can anyone verify that they are now only shipping the newer version (because that's what I want)?

Excellent! I guess they just haven't thought to update their e-commerce system. I've really been on the fence on this one; it isn't cheap, even with the coupon, but hey, it's the holidays and I deserve a new toy! Besides, I've been wanting to make a batch of coconut oil, but have been putting it off because it's such a pain doing it the traditional way.

Process:
1. Decarb unground cannabis in foil packet in oven at 240 for 45 minutes

4. Put decarbed Candy Jack in MB machine along with melted oil and run a 1 hour cycle at 220.

I won't argue with success, but I was wondering if it really needs both the oven decarb and the hour cycle in the MB at 220? I'm kinda hoping that an hour at 220 to decarb plus another cycle (4 hours or ???) at 160 for extraction would be sufficient.

OTOH, I'm not sure I have a solid enough grasp on the science of it :science: can decarb even be done while in the oil (or must it be done dry)? And if so, might it not be better to reverse the order, running the lower-temp extraction cycle first, followed by the higher-temp decarb?

Just kinda thinking out loud and seeking input while waiting for my unit to arrive.

I'm certainly not a pro. I used the updated directions as posted a few months ago:

Oil: (coconut, Olive, Grape seed, etc)
1 Hour @ 220
reset
4 Hours @ 160

I don't trust the MB to do a proper decarb so I did it in the oven first. Probably could have skipped the hour at 220 in the MB, but thought it couldn't hurt.

Has anyone tried making cannabis e-cig juice out of glycerin tincture? Looks pretty easy - just make glycerine tincture in the MB and then cut it with propylene glycol:

http://beyondchronic.com/2014/08/how-to-make-thc-e-cig-juice-using-mbm-glycerin-tincture/

While I love my dry-herb vapes (MFLB and Ascent), I think with the popularity of e-cigs that would make for a pretty stealthy way to medicate in public. Well, 'stealthy' in the sense of 'hiding in plain sight' anyway!

It's HERE!

My Magical Butter MB2e arrived today - YAY!

I have a question that perhaps someone here can answer. In the online photos it shows the included filter as a Purify 90. The Purify Filter 90 is also sold as an accessory. Included with my machine, however, is a Purify Filter 190. What, if any, is the difference? 90 vs 190 microns? Perhaps they've determined that a coarser filter works better (faster), while still offering acceptable level of particulate filtration?

Anyway, the only difference I can discern looking at the photo on their website vs the one I have is that the tag and stitching on the 90 are blue, and my 190 has green stitching and tag. I've sent them a note asking about it, but would appreciate any input offered here. Perhaps recent purchasers who have the newer MB2e model can check which filter came with theirs.

OK. I just got off the phone with Joey at Magical Butter and he confirmed my suspicion that it was an intentional change. The 190 filter bag is indeed what they are now shipping with the machines as they've determined it makes straining of the final product easier. He mentioned that people making glycerin tincture were having a particularly hard time with the 90 because of increased viscosity when adding lecithin to glycerin.

Zondo

Just that dude
I make it and use it (as do dozens in the community, here) with pure VG, and do NOT cut it with propylene glycol or anything.
Just vape it in Ecig as it is in VG.
It works great and is good strength because you did not cut it.
Do you happen to have exact directions for when using this machine? I've tried what the magical butter staff gave me. Decarb then 4hrs@130F with 2.5 oz bud and 1.5 cup vg/ .25 cup pg. Didnt do a darn thing for me. I then tried 750ml everclear instead and then reduced. Took that and made a more 50/50 vg/pg mix to not make it so thick 1hr@130F. The second batch is really hard to say if it works. I've gone through many different atomizers and clearomizers trying to find one that works, because i only seem to be able to feel anything just on the first day of use. After that, nothing. Today I'm thinking about trying again, but this time when i reduce, I'm going to try it with no pg/vg. Just straight up concentrate. And also take a little bit and just add a very tiny amount of vp/pg on the stove. I still have about 1.5 cups of the second batch. Is there a way I could evaporate the pg/vg from it to make it a concentrate again? I'd hate to throw it away.

Finally got to try out my Magical Butter machine last night! I won't bother with a full review, as there are plenty of those, but I will make a few observations.

Power consumption: I haven't found any mention of amperage or wattage in any of their literature, nor (surprisingly) on the unit itself. So - I measured my 120-volt North American MB2e using my Kill-A-Watt. It varies, of course, but the heater alone seems to draw about 850 watts, and the blender another 150, for a 1000-watt maximum draw. Under nine amps, so you should be able to use it safely on any circuit, just so it isn't sharing it with a high-wattage device like a space heater.

Sound: almost completely silent, except when the blender runs. Then it sounds like - surprise - a blender! But not especially loud, and for the most part it only runs for about ten seconds every five minutes. Not too bad, though I found it was loud enough to miss dialog on the TV in the same room. If it was in a different room, I imagine it would be less of a distraction.

Performance: I used coconut oil. The latest instructions recommend oven decarb followed by a one-hour cycle in the machine. I didn't want to do an oven decarb, and one hour seemed pretty short to me. WHat I actually did was 1hour at 220 followed by four hours at 160.

I heated up my jars of coconut oil in the microwave just enough to mostly liquefy the contents, then added the oil to the Magic Butter machine to just over the "MIN" fill line. I then added an ounce of Bubba Kush buds and a tablespoon of Sunflower Liquid Lecithin. I set it for 220 degrees and one hour (to decarboxylate). When that cycle ended, I momentarily unplugged and replugged the power cord to reset, and then started a cycle at 160 degrees for four hours.

When that was done, I poured it through the included 190 micron bubble bag, which I almost didn't need - it seems all the plant material was settled quite compactly on the bottom of the Magical Butter container! I scooped out the dregs into the filter bag and was able to squeeze out a few more ounces of liquid, though.

Results: It came out a bit lighter in color than my manually made ABV oil, as you can see in the photo (ABV on the left, MB2e oil from bud on right).

al5hd3.jpg

Of course darker color doesn't necessarily mean stronger, and keep in mind that when I make ABV oil manually I start with the (already ground) ABV and add just enough oil to fully cover it - so about a 1:1 ratio by volume. I imagine the MB batch was more like 1:4 ratio of bud to oil (if I were to finely grind the bud first for comparison). Anyhow, I'll report back on potency once I've had a chance to experiment with it a bit.

Oh - SMELL: The essence escaping from the unit while in use (especially during the 220 degree cycle, where the occasional wisp of steam escaped, presumably from the moisture being boiled out of the weed), was subtle and pleasant - smelled more like ABV than fresh flowers. I did notice, however, if I went outside for a while and came back in, the scent was, while still subtle, a bit more weedy. Even today when I go out for a few minutes and come back in I can smell a lingering hint or two. Not that I'm complaining or anything :D.

There you have it - that's about all I can think of at the moment.

Fun fact:
Even if you NEVER filter... and pour the butter/herb mix, into water of the same temperature (or hotter)...
the plant matter will separate itself as it cools, and be easily removed when the butter gets refrigerated.

When I ordered my MB machine, I also ordered an extra Purify Filter 90 which is what was pictured with the MB machine on their website. I figured it would be nice to have 2 filters so one would always be clean.

Instead of the expected two 90 micron filters, I received one 90 micron filter and one 190 micron filter. I've been using the 90 micron filter because it's the one pictured in all the MB instructions and website.

After seeing your post, I decided to try the 190 micron filter this time. WOW! It's SO much easier to strain and much less messy as a result. If you have a MB machine with a 90 micron filter and hate straining your product, get the 190 micron and you'll probably be much happier!

I didn't notice any sediment in the strained oil any more than with the 90 micron filter, but the oil did seem darker in a side by side comparison of the last batch of Candy Jack coconut oil I made the same way. It also seemed more potent than the batch strained with the 90 micron filter, though that will require more testing to confirm

Anyhow, I'll report back on potency once I've had a chance to experiment with it a bit.

After a bit of experimentation, I can report that trying to compare potency was somewhat of an apples vs. oranges situation. I'd have to say that perhaps color is still a useful, if only relative, indicator of potency. My (manually made) ABV oil seems to be at least twice as strong as the oil I made in the MB2e with fresh bud. That kinda makes sense, though, as I estimated I used perhaps four times as much ABV (relatively) as bud. As a rule-of-thumb for edibles, I consider ABV to be half as strong as fresh. So, doing the (admittedly casual) math, that tends to agree with my actual experience.

That said, the bud oil, even with dosage adjusted to equivalent strength, is a different high than the ABV oil. The bud oil gives more of an energetic, fidgety buzz, while the ABV high is notably more mellow, with foggy overtones. I imagine that is probably the result of the higher relative THC content of the bud, versus higher relative CBD in the ABV (given that much of the THC has already been enjoyed via prior vaporization).

FWIW, all my ABV goes in the same container, regardless of strain or temperature. I know some people like to sort their ABV, and that can be useful, but I just don't bother. So its makeup will vary depending on what I've been vaping and at how high a final temp, and will likely be a blend of multiple strains. OTOH, with the batch of bud oil, it was just one strain (though I could have custom-blended more than one, and may try that in future) of fresh bud used.

Do you happen to have exact directions for when using this machine? I've tried what the magical butter staff gave me. Decarb then 4hrs@130F with 2.5 oz bud and 1.5 cup vg/ .25 cup pg. Didnt do a darn thing for me.

Just to be sure, what was your exact decarb routine, time and temp??
If that isn't correct, then you are SOL
