C'mon, Pac! You can't take any time off from FC!! What ails you?!?!?

Just kidding - and very much so!! Hope you're enjoying your time on the road. Think I speak for all here in saying - enjoy it and don't dare worry about this!! Think it will be quite an enhancement to FC, but seems like most are doing OK for now.

We have finally managed to move forward with this idea. Please see the Plugins Best Of and Portables Best Of sticky threads for details.

These will only work if you do your part. What we could really use is at least one volunteer for each of our monster threads who is willing to slog through and pick out the good posts. If we get more than one, we can divide up the work. We've done our part, now it's up to you.

Just noticed the best of forum pop up. A really great idea and I definitely support it.

I'll have some time to spare over the next week or two that I could spend powering through some threads. Should I just PM for a section when I get some time?

Thanks for the help. You can just pick a thread and start. It would be a good idea to mention what you're working on here to avoid duplication of effort, but we'll onbly need to assign sections if we get a lot more volunteers than I expect.

I think we'll see two ways the threads grow: from volunteers who are willing to review a whole thread to find the good posts, and from nominations that happen as people see new posts that should qualify.

Went through first 129 pgs. of Ud thread. Hopefully it's the kind of posts you had in mind. I tried to keep it limited to stuff that is still relevant (i.e. if post was mainly about the older silicone stems, or mostly outdated info).

Many thanks for the work. I've created the Best of the Underdog Vaporizer thread. It's good to try to keep the selections current but inevitably information changes as a design evolves. There's nothing wrong with including historical posts.

@pakalolo -- would it be a good idea, if possible, to put a link to the 'best of' section that inconspicuously shows up somewhere on each page so it isn't hard for people to navigate to the nominating section?

You could ask @vtac to do that, but really, that's not how the forum should work. What you're describing should be a bookmark in your browser. I have four FC bookmarks strung across the top of my browser, but all this Best Of stuff means I'll probably add a couple more.

There are definitely rough spots in this idea that need to be worked out. I'm concerned about collisions—multiple reports of the same post. There's no easy way for members to spot these, or moderators for that matter. I still don't know how those should be handled.

There's also the issue of threads that exist but the parent thread has been only partially surveyed. That should sort itself out over time.

I was thinking about this as well. What if we "gilded" posts that have been selected for "Best Of" inclusion? Maybe a little star, or blue ribbon, or picture of @max or something....

That way people would:
A) know that the post they are reading is quality and
B) know that there is no need to nominate it (again) for best of status.

Oh sure, more work for us mods. :p

I think it's a reasonable solution as long as the marker isn't a picture of @max. We want people to read these posts, after all.

Many of our threads have become so long that it has gotten difficult for people to find the good stuff. To cope with this, we use "Best Of" threads.

These threads are created by copying the best posts for each thread to a locked thread in this sub-forum.
  • We will copy posts based on your recommendations.
  • Anyone can nominate a post by simply posting a link to it in this thread. Place your cursor over the number in the lower right corner of the post, then right-click and copy the link.
  • Nominated posts should be reasonably well-written and provide useful information.
  • Once a nomination has been dealt with, it will be removed from this thread.
We hope that these threads become a valuable resource over time, but this depends on the community. These threads will be as good as you make them. Note that they will be always be unfinished, and will usually not have much in them when they are started.

Finally, we reserve the right to make the decision whether a post will be included or not.

Please do not start discussions here. Make your comments in the Best Of... thread in the Community section. To make this work, we need volunteers. Thanks for helping.

Edit to add clarifications
  • You can put as many nominations in a post as you like within the 10,000 character limit.
  • You can nominate your own posts.
  • Valid respectful criticisms should be selected. These aren't fan threads.
  • Problem descriptions are important even if they are unresolved.
  • The posts selected can be identified by the Best Of FC badge:
    bofc.png

This badge is a link back to the relevant "Best Of" thread.
This is a great idea! I have another suggestion I would like to see (if possible). I find myself reading through and wanting to "bookmark" certain posts that I might want to go back to in the future. I would love to have all my favorite contributions all in one place under my profile. Possible?

Not with the current version of this software. :( That's an excellent suggestion though. I wonder if anyone has submitted it to xenForo.

I'm sorry, but I just saw that best of thread... I think there is little functionality to it. An endless list of links with little to no description won't be looked upon by many. Many new users and/or lurkers will never even see it.

The Vaporpedia is where the good information belongs. It's an existing system that everyone understands. Currently it's poorly formatted though and the information is extremely uncompressed, outdated and somewhat random. Like this...

Rather than starting more and more new project, we should work on existing ones.

You're looking at the list of links to nominated posts. Those are removed once I can find time to copy the posts they link to into the proper BestOf thread, such as the Best of the E-Nano from Epicvape thread. When a post is selected for a Best Of thread, it gets a badge in its original thread that is linked to the Best Of thread.

I think that should draw people to those threads, don't you?

Concerning Vaporpedia: I put in many hours working on Vaporpedia and eventually concluded that it seems like a good idea but it's not working. Not enough people wanted to contribute and not many people even know it exists.

@vtac is the one to ask about that. I agree it's a nice idea.

I don't think your mock-up is shitty, by the way. Well done!
I like the idea. The functionality isn't in the software at the moment, but it's possible with some modifications. I'll look into it and for the time being I'll put up a notice with the links. :)
