Can all vape pens potentially combust?

This has been a concern of mine for some time now. I have limited experience with them. I've used two, both were Chinese models that I don't know the name of. One would combust, while the other that I used didn't appear to. I've been doing research on pens for about 2 weeks and there seems to be conflicting information out there about whether or not they combust. It seems in general that you have to get the timing down to avoid this. Are there no foolproof pens for flower out there that won't combust at all?

Pretty much ALL vapes have the potential to combust if the temp is set to high or airflow is blocked / some combo of the two, I say pretty much because I'm sure someone has made a device that won't get hot enough... Most of the pen type vapes are just terrible with flower and if you do get a set up that works you've spent so much money you would have been better off grabbing a MFLB, Indica, Pax all good performing stealth vapes. If your looking for concentrate use the pens can be very effective and in the 25 - 80 range depending how fancy you go with the battery. At some point every pen I've used for flower basically turned into an epipe :2c:

That's pretty much what same conclusion ive come to as well. I have a vaporbros box but I'm looking for something simple, inexpensive(<$80) that I can carry with me around the house that doesn't need a lighter.

Thanks for the reply.

Touch outside the $80 budget but you can get a Magic Flight with a bunch of extras from puffitup with fc coupon for like 105 to your door FYI. If you want something that's going to perform well your limited to analog (flame powered) portable vapes for that budget.

The V2 Pro Series 3 is a pen that actually vapes. However the oven only holds ~.1 grams, and the battery only has enough juice to vape ~4 ovens. It comes out to ~$95 with the dry herb cart/

Like I said in my original post I wasn't trying to imply that they didn't exist but at that price point unless the only concern is uber stealth, which it doesn't look like was a huge deal here as op stated he wanted something to keep in his pocket walking around the house, imho I think one is far better off spending the extra $10 and getting a MLFB kit especially with all the extras puffitup throws in free :2c:

yeah, e-cig type stuff works perfectly well for concentrates, but i think for flowers i'd go mflb, or one of the other flower ones. with concentrates the pen type stuff is uber stealth tho, if i had the money i'd go that route more often.

I would disagree with "pretty much all". Quite a few models won't combust because the maximum temp is set well below combustion and nothing else, including a blocked airflow, is going to shove it up enough to reach combustion point.

Not really, but if you're going to vape at near combustion point, then you'll have the potential to combust with some models. But since you get thick, harsh vapor and very dark ABV well below combustion temp, it's very easy to avoid combustion with most models (certainly those with temp settings-analog or digital). I've lost count of the different models I've used over the years, but I can count the times I've combusted with an electric vape on one finger. There's just no need to ramp up the temp that close to combustion. There's plenty of room in the 400's for high temp vapor without going up close to 450. I'd rather avoid smoke in a vape and just burn one if you have to push the line between vapor and smoke.

I think we all agree combustion is not a goal here, that is you shouldn't be doing it. Yes, you should be keeping control of the temperature. But that's not how I read the original question. I see it as more 'can all vape pens potentially combust'. Can they, not will they if not controlled properly. Or is it self limiting (safe).

Guys want to avoid accidents, it can harsh yer mellow for sure..........

I think it's fair to say some just can't get that hot, but they tend to be pretty useless. Open loop (uncontrolled) pen vapes I think are risky if they're useful. The possible exception would be the TV Evolution, now out of production. Being true convection you have to work very very hard to make it combust it's not going to happen because you get loaded and stop paying attention or because you hand it to someone who hands it to some fool nobody knows like the others.

It's just too small in scale to do open loop I think. The numbers are just wrong. It's going to have to be physically bigger and approach it differently to work. MFLB is a good example. As is it's clone/repackage, Palm. For a few more dollars you can go with flashvape if you're basically fearless. With care, I believe you can rig it to be pretty much combustion free. It's like a MFLB on steroids. With some fun options. It's not for the timid IMO, not a 'sipper' kind of vape. In that same $150 or so you can get a Solo and have a serious closed loop rig (where you set the temperature) that allows you to set temperature within small steps and is basically all glass for the ultimate in taste. If stealth is not a major factor, it's very recommended as an alternative.

By the time you've bought a couple cheap pen vapes you could have been enjoying a purpose built, high quality, trouble free (for the most part) vape instead. Given the value of herb you hope to run through it and how long you hope to enjoy it, IMO this is a time to consider other options that won't be combusting unexpectedly (or at all) and won't need replacement before summer sets in.
