Just to get all you char freaks spinning in small circles, I understand traditional cabinet makers control the char by using heated sand (sometimes masked, sometimes not).

I'm thinking something like putting the stripped down VM in a coffee can, then heating another can full of sand with a thermometer in it to temperature (as a guess, 500F?) then dump the sand on top of the VM, stir it a bit to keep hot sand in contact, for say 45 seconds before dumping?

You could practice on fruit wood blocks I'd think to figure things out. Adjusting time and temperature.

Just stirring the pot some.......or suggesting you do so.......

I think this one is a bit more charred that what I would expect. If you go back and look at my charred Vapmans I don't go that far - Especially on the outside. On the outside I just char it enough to darken it. The Peach Tree wood looks a very dark brown, but not completely black.

But to each his own...

Yeah, I like mine Black as night or Pitch Black. Think stealth or Batman like.

If I remember right, Mr Mellish used a huge-ass lighter on his and cooked the inside of the ring - around the bowl/crucible...

I must disagree @Mojo. I did not use a huge ass torch. The torch used was the one that came with the VM. I ordered the non-mica from a site in the U.S., so I don't know if it's exactly the same lighter or not. It looked similar to the one that came from Renee, but his was clearly better. Unfortunately, that torch also went to the friend who has the VM, so I can't compare.

I did buy a creme brûlée torch but returned it without trying it on the VM because the flame was scary as shit. (Or maybe I did use it and just can't remember shit...you are a tad younger and may have full availability of all your resources. )

Yeah, my memory isn't that great either... I could swear you used the creme brûlée torch from hell on it and that's what turned it into a Charcoal Briquette, but I could easily be imagining things.

I hadn't seen the sand charring technique, but it's well worth a try. Heating it with the torch lighter sounds easier to me than the sand, but you mentioned something about masking it? That perked my interest since doing the two-toned charring is a PITA for me...

Can you tell us how you would mask it so the sand doesn't char some parts?

The thing I recall seeing in a book long ago was on the order of a stencil of metal (copper?) It had a couple of 'bridges' over the slot which was 'wavy'. I think what you did was put it down, then pour a line of sand over the slot from end to end. The metal shields (masks) the wood by drawing the heat off and insulating it to some extent. I'm sure it was used repeatedly.

Masking VM could be done several ways I'd think. Including Teflon or other high temperature tape? The goal is to keep the hot sand from contacting the bare wood.

Of, that sounds real interesting, but I think I'm too lazy to use the sand technique. I'd like an easy stencil for masking with a jet lighter, though.

Time to tinker!

Ok, I guess I'm posting this as a point of curiosity. I had been burning down the shitty wax and it seemed like it was quite low. Last night, I dropped herb on the screen, thinking the residue might give a little boost. This might blow the minds of our more literal friends but it tasted like wet dog.

I was doing my normal process: 5 seconds of heat, 2 second pause, then 5 seconds of heat to get things rolling. Then, 5-6 seconds of heat per draw. I combusted and it was stank city. Does wax make the herb more combustible? I really didn't think I was killing with the heat.

Good question, I think not.

It doesn't flash on a hot nail which you'd expect if it was all that flammable. And adding it to temperature controlled vapes (like Solo and Iolite for instance) doesn't cause this problem. My guess is it just got too hot, which might be the cause of the damp canine aftertaste?

It shouldn't but you said "shitty wax" so maybe... if it wasn't winterized/dewaxed it could have had some residual plant fats/waxes which may have been the "flash point"... I have noticed subpar oil leaves a fair bit of black residue on nails. With "analog vaporizers" that require user input for heat like Vapman/Daisy/etc it may have been the oil residue that started it.

Has anyone ever painted the vapman egg or used markers on it?

Has anyone ever tryed to sand down where the mp connects to make it fit snug in a 14mm?

Also has anyone found a good water proof case for the torch lighter?

The pan and screen became tarnished pretty quick is that normal?

Any good ways to the pan and screen clean maybe even polish...? probably not safe for the health with crazy chemicals in polishers haha

Here is a pic of what my basic looks like after 2 weeks of pretty heavy use.

7hLoPPD.jpg

Those makes on the rim came from last night at the bar with a quick session with 2 first timers haha. drunk in a car with no lights trying to hurry is not the best time to teach what little technique i kno haha. I also quickly ran the torch over most the inside to get the any thing that might smoke/burn.

Though my experimenting I have found the vapman to be a little rough to use on these Pennsylvania roads, too bumpy for the lighter. This was just one experience while my friend drove his ford ranger so maybe other cars on other raods its a bit easier haha. Also the torch is hard to see in the day light.

I've mainly been testing the concentrate screen with herb for smaller amounts and more evenly vaped results. Definitely like it but find my self packing 2 pretty much back to back.

My best way to not over cook my herb is just like @VAPEHUNTER said go til it taste bad. If I can get one last hit I will other wise its a nice even brown no dark blackish abv.

I dont count my hits but I would say between 5 to 10 is average for me depending how much I baby the torch.

Im really enjoy and love using the vapman daily. I think a huge difference is to me is the 3 air/carb holes that cool the vapor. Im use to much hotter vapor from the pnp and the hammer. But leaving those 3 holes open makes a really smooth hit.

Sorry for bringing myself in this particular discussion but when I saw the picture of the filter I just couldn`t hold back.
Very important, as noted in the vapman manual: the filter should be rubbed off on a piece of cloth (pants) or paper towel after each use! Preferably when the filter is still warm and the residues soft.
Keep the filter clean and shiny at all times!! One of the holy laws of vapman.:)

I actually bought several filters, and change them and clean them. Because sometimes the little Man o Vap is so effective that I forget to wipe the hash/weed of the filter. Oh well...

Ok. I hope you guys like pictures. Here is how I modified the MFLB water pipe whip adapter to work for my Vapman. The whip worked fine when I got it but I wanted to use my White silicone hose with it.
White silicone hose link→ http://www.vaporwarehouse.com/site/vaporbrothers-whip-hose-silicone.html
The white hose is too big to work with the whip adapter as it is so here is what I did.

Place silicone tube "gasket" over glass stem
hMYxMd2.jpg

Now the glass stem will fit snug it the 14mm glass adapter

With a little help from a 3/8 drill bit we can make the stem fit in the "wood block"

Finished Magic Flight / Vapman water pipe adapter

That little extra piece of silicone tube you see lets me attach my white silicone tube

I clean the mouthpiece filter like René mentioned, and also dump out the herb and clean the bowl immediately after the last hit because I found that the resin would stick to the inside of the bowl if left there to dry.

Cleaning it after it was dry was a pain, but right after the last hit, the bowl is still warm and it cleans very easily with tissue paper.

I know it's easy to forget due to the effects you get right at session's end, but this is why my bowl looked so clean for so long...

After a while I sanded it with some 1500 grit sand paper, but now although it looks nice and stays clean, it doesn't look as purty without the golden layer :(

I'd like to say that you don't have to burn the Vapman to char it.

In my experience, just burning the inside (around the bowl) untill it's dark brown or just turns black is enough to harden the wood and make it pretty damn fire resistant. If you light it in flames, you went too far...

Look at my old Vapman - I swear it's over a year old and used almost daily. It has no charcoal even around the bowl.

If you look up some survival videos on YouTube where they use fire to harden the tips of wooden spears, you'll see that they don't burn it - this would make the spear brittle instead of stronger.

I experimented quite a bit with scrap wood before I got brave enough to point the torch to my Vapman.

The charring is supposed to make it so it doesn't get burnt to charcoal. At least this is why I came up with the idea, but each person does it however he likes it best. :)

I also think that charring is not for everyone and I have charred three of my friend's new Vapmans for them because they didn't want to do it themselves. If I wasn't there to do it for them, I would have recommended for them to buy the Classic/Mica instead because I don't like the way the basic looks without charring and oiling. But that's me being finicky.

The basic is still great for someone who wants to get a great price with the same functionality.

Sorry for the long post. :o

i only can speak for the wallnut version, but after a week or so of use it actually looks pretty good without cosmetic charring. the wood got a lot darker, be it due to the exposure to air or the contact with my fingers. the charring in the bottom part is concentrated around the heating plate, the charring around the mouthpiece is distributed pretty evenly. so far i have nothing to complain about my vm basic in the looks department. :)

Ruh roh, this means I am a bad, bad owner. I dump the contents the next day and only wipe the filter if there is debris. Still looks better than @Philreal187's. Probably because I really haven't pushed the torch too hard until the last few days. Do I get thrown out of the club with my privileges revoked?

Andreaerdna

If God is the answer, then the question is wrong
Yesterday I ordered a basic one but I ask René to exchange it with a classic model after i saw the recent photos on this discussion, this just before shipping

After reading yours differents opinions I was pretty sure about my basic;
after seeing the photo I had my epiphany: classic vapman it must be

Finally I think I maybe over reacted and if I like it as expected I will buy a basic one for outside home.

Anyway thanks FC community! thanks to you all stopping smoking is funnier and more interesting than continuing

I'm sure a lot of Vapman users are guilty of leaving a spent bowl in their Vapman longer than they should. I know I am. I've found that if I get my Vapman up to temperature and wipe it with a Iso soaked Q-tip it cleans up nicely.

@Andreaerdna You really can't go wrong with either one you choose.

@vapman other than Yew tree what other types of "exotic" wood have you considered using to make the Vapman.
Have you ever considered doing a custom wood Vapman. Similar to Andy at Epicvape, if I send him my wood he will use it to make me a custom E-nano.
I would love to see a custom Vapman made with some 2-tone Amboyna Burl.

Here is a photo of a piece I purchased for a custom Nano.
