...Main concerns are smell and maintenance. Will I be ok with those on the Firefly?
I think the unit has a definite smell after use. I keep mine in the sock that comes with it, which I have never washed because I like that smell. And if you are concerned about odor, I think the whole thing should be kept in an airtight metal container (like a small Christmas gift tin).

I find the maintenance annoying, but the improved flavor, bud strength, and easy-on-the-lungs-compared-to-smoking makes it totally worth it.

A. I've never noticed any odor from an FF when the lid is closed, and I've owned 8 of em. Soon to be 9. (Definitely throws odor when opened though.)
B. That's a sock? ;)

He meant the carry "sack", like the ones for your Oakleys, I believe; with the sock, it gets a little slippery, I found.

Sure, and actually that's all you need. If you hang that FF sock on your chimney mantel on Christmas eve, Santy will fill it with a FF.

:mental:

Hah! Great idea. Plus, a little FF sock would make a nice stocking stuffer for our more affluent friends. (Though with the 25% discount they really would make great gifts.)

So instead of the unit shipping from Ireland and straight to London, they decided to get it shipped from the USA to Ireland and then to me. Its been stuck on the same status update for the last two days. According to the tracking, its been delivered to Ireland, but the rep on the phone says he might have doubts its been stopped by the customs. Why would they stop it? I'm starting to get really annoyed now as I'm going away on Sunday and wouldn't have ordered it if I wasn't going to get it Saturday. If I knew they're not shipping it directly from Ireland, I would've not placed the order. Really close to cancelling my order and trying to order through FF themselves with 25% off and use a mail forwarding service to get it shipped to the UK, which apparently also covers me with the warranty, only issue would be obviously having to send it back all the way to the USA. Has anyone had experience with mail forwarding services?

I'm furious! Conveniently the 'chat' service on their site has now become a 'message' where they'll (apparently) get back to you. It says delivered and signed for in Ireland so I don't know how its been held by customs. Even more annoying as I have two tracking numbers

The reason it would have been stopped by customs is that they levy import taxes and VAT on things entering the EEC from outside of the EEC. The customs officer will have to look at the paperwork and determine how to classify the device and what the appropriate duties are for it. I've had them charge me VAT on the cost of shipping as well, but that seems to be arbitrary. Sometimes the process happens quickly, sometimes it takes a long time.

If you do need need to pay fees there are several ways of doing it. The currier will be able to take care of all the paperwork for you, but they usually charge a hefty fee to do so. Alternatively you can take care of any paperwork and pay yourself. This might require a trip to your local customs office.

As for the warranty, provided that it's not a counterfeit FF, there isn't any reason you won't have the five year warranty as it's transferable. It's just that all claims must take place from within North America.

To be honest, if I knew it was shipping from the USA, I wouldn't have got it as I'm going away tomorrow and thought I'd have it by today. If I had to wait for all this customs nonsense, I should've just left it till later on and possibly even got a much better deal than I did from here.

Only good thing is, I don't think I'm liable to pay for the customs duty as I didn't get it from USA, I was told it was shipping from Ireland. But this whole experience has pissed me off, I was really excited about taking it with me on my trip. I'm tempted to just email them and cancel the whole order and buy a PS4, and worry about the FF when the Christmas hustle and bustle is over.

Part of me wants to wait though but the fact that they haven't been transparent with me from the start and kept making up lies as they go is annoying me. They've increased the price also from £195 to £216.

@Jack Sprat So if I was to import it from America using a mail forwarding service, how much custom duty do you think I'll be paying? If it's not too much, Its worth the savings getting it in dollars rather than pounds

Sounds like a plan.

Have happy holiday in the meantime, you aren't headed for the infamous Costa Del Dole, are you.

Any chance of picking one up in metro London?

You'd most likely pay VAT (20% of declared value) and an import duty which could be anything as they vary depending on the item.

Hmm doesn't sound like a great deal anymore. If it was $200, I'd be paying $40 VAT and then whatever else they feel like charging me on top plus postage, will end up paying in the region of around $300, which is pretty similar to the price here. I guess I'll just have to stay with this order then. Hoping their warranty isn't as shabby as their delivery process

While its a PITA to have to wait for your new toy, it will be worth the wait. When you get it!

You are right, hopefully no VAT + import tax.

I'm hoping it arrives on Tuesday now, don't see it coming any sooner than that. I don't think I'm liable for any import duties as I purchased it from a UK seller so I think its being delayed as they're having to complete the paperwork and pay for the duties if any.
