Herb Grinders

Since I have owned a Medium sized Space case for almost two years now I decided I would make a short review,

Wow, It is just like new, apart from a few scratches and personal damage (damage I caused by dropping not by use) it is flawless. It still grinds smooth as ever (maybe better than new?) and it has never once locked on my even a bit!

I use it for vaping and smoking, I tend to grind it less when it is for smoking and it is always great smelling and the consistency is great, For vaping however, if I use my Aromed a bit of extra grinding is good, and for my Arizer Solo it is good no matter how the Space Case grinds the goods.

It's just as good as the space case, MAYBE BETTER! I will buy a medium or large one whenever (ifever) my Space case gives out.

Been playing with it for a couple days. It boggles the mind how quickly it turns nugs into grind, only a couple turns and it's gone. Definitely blows the mendo mulcher out of the water

Dude that’s mine! I’ve got a few little scuffs and a small dent from dropping it on concrete, but the whole thing is still solid and looks just as good as yours. Go team purple ;)

You know, your name is pretty fitting, I feel like we have all the same things.
Pretty much, man. Great minds think alike (just as great consumers purchase alike

edit: SCS can be purchased from VapeLife. They have a 30% off sale at the moment.

email I got from them:
JUST A HEADS UP!
USE THE CODE: 'holidaze' DURING CHECKOUT AND RECEIVE 30% OFF MOST PRODUCTS THIS THANKSGIVING AND BLACK FRIDAY!

VAPELIFE BABY!!

I can't totally recommend their company. They were a bit annoying to deal with and up themselves when I inquired about the physical damage to my SCS, and did nothing to resolve the issue whatsoever.
30% off is significant though, so if you can save money then it's a win win :)

I've had and have a bunch of grinders from cheap to expensive. My small plain aluminum two piece Space Case is by far my favorite workhorse. It so perfectly grinds between 0.25 and 0.5 grams exactly how I want it. For about $20, it's a real bargain too.

I will not use a kief catcher for several rains:

1) 2 piece grinders give much more precise control of how coarse/fine the finished product is.

2) When stoned, it is much more pleasant to use a simple grinder with the same number of parts as I have hands.

3) Removing kief makes it impossible for me to calculate a standard medical dose using lab tested medications.

4) I'm fortunate to live in a legal state where I can buy clean kief cheaper than I can produce it from dispensary mmj. Im sure a Kief catcher would get use in my home if I lived elsewhere or did not need to carefully determine dosage.

I agree 100% with all of this and more!
Why would someone want to weaken their soon to be vaped weed... just to save the kief for later?
It is like removing some alcohol from your liquor, to save for a later date.
As fo kief....
I too can get kief, for less than meds...Pure kief is actually 10-20% lower in cost than the herb it came from!

In my case, because I don't notice any difference and it's another way of extending my stash. Medical users have different needs and could well notice the difference.

Many strains don't yield much kief anyway unless you use something like putting a nickel in the collecting chamber. In my opinion you're not getting pure kief when you do that. The yield will be more green than yellow, indicating that you're getting a lot of fine bud particulate as well as kief.

How about after it stops raining? ;)

I use a 4 pc. (thus separating the kief) only when the kief is gonna separate anyway- because it's wintertime and the herb I'm grinding has become so dry that it's either collect it separately or lose quite a bit trying to keep it with the ground bud.
Vapor life store is Out of stock and no longer carry. Any other suggestions?

My purple, small 3 piece just came today... IDK why I didn't buy one of these sooner. Much more manageable than my large and way more convenient than my mini 2 piece... I'll never need to dump my grind out again! Just suck up a gong/stem load out if the bottom chamber and I'm golden!

...plus did i mention that it's poiple?

I bought a medium 4-piece Space Case a couple of weeks ago and I am very pleased with its performance, prior to this I've only had cheaper grinders and the difference in ease of grinding is amazing!

The plan was to get a SCS because it seems to be more gentle with the herb, but I got a good deal on the SC so I'm happy either way!

Does SCS make a large 3 piece?

No large 3 piece yet. They say other 3 piece sizes will be coming but no one knows when.
The small is about 2.1" diameter. For me, that's the sweet spot but I grind
only a little at a time.

Note that there is some confusion on size names. Some sites call the 2.1" a medium but from SCS, that size is called a small.

I've never thought of it that way, always blamed the screen. Mine is so slow to collect kief.

How often do you guys clean your Grinders?

One thing that helps my Sharp Shredda collect more is just brushing the screen off after every few uses since the mesh is so fine it clogs pretty quickly with sticky kief. I can be amazed at what falls through from a screen that still looks relatively clean.

:peace:

I was going to buy from the official Santa Cruz site, but $10 shipping my ass man.
I agree, that shipping charge is fucking crazy. A small first class box is only a few bucks to ship and Priority would be about $6. It doesn't take much handling to toss a grinder in a box, it's like they would rather not sell direct.

Every 6 months was good when I used a SC or any other diamond tooth grinder. That has changed now that I use my SCS grinders 99% of the time. They do not need to be cleaned more often to function, they will keep grinding... they just don't shred or cut as well when they get dirty. Santa Cruz Shredders have sharp cutting teeth and if they are gunked up it turns in to more of a grinder than a shredder.

To anyone with a SCS that has not been cleaned in a while, clean it and you'll get that "oh wow!" reaction again when you feel it cut through that first fill.

Now that you mention it, my SCS has been grinding differently and that would explain why. Brilliant.

I know what I'm doing today.

How specifically do you calculate your dosages? Do you account for draw speed/length, loss of resin stuck to the grinder? In order to notice much of a difference at all with a kief catcher, you'd probably have to be able to stabilize all of those variables, and possibly several more.

I agree 100% with all of this and more!

Do you guys think that if someone took one bud (big enough for 2 bowls), cut it down the middle, and ground it to the same size bits, one half through a 2 piece grinder, and the other through a 4 piece, that you'd be able to tell the difference? Honestly, I highly doubt that anyone could.

Even if you can tell the difference, you could always put the kief back in if you wanted to. The screens are more kief "catchers" than they are "extractors". They are meant to let the few trichs that come off from each grind collect in one area so eventually it can equal something noticeable. What's cool about a kief catcher though, is that you can collect kief from a bunch of your different strains over time, and then have a blend to add onto whatever you want, or to use by itself.

All that said, with the ability to buy high quality kief, for cheaper than bud, a kief catcher really isnt necessary, and a two piece grinder sounds like a better idea, since it gives better control over how fine you want your grind.

@EverythingsHazy I calculate dosage by weighing out a half gram of high CBD flowers from a known grower/lot/potency. This 50-75 mg CBD is my daily amount of CBD to be vaporized with my E-Nano and supplemented with a THC source of my choice depending on time of day and intended effect. But I'm a former research/analytical chemist, so I have a very consistent routine that assures mostly consistent and predictable dosing without having to be too academic about in.

I pay top dollar for lab tested top shelf high CBD because that part is critical for my pain management. Finding enough THC is not a problem and that's where I enjoy shopping around for flavor and novelty hashes, etc.

Interesting you should ask about if I could tell the difference between Kiefed bud from a 4 piece and non Kiefed from a 2 piece grinder, because I have a perfect story from last night: a very atypical experience for me as a vaporist mmj user.

NSFV: tale of combustion ahead

A while back I found a box with an old kief press for making hash discs. I took all the little pinches of shake from the bottom of about 20 mmj prescription bottles and ran it through a screen to collect the kief. I didn't want to vape the green dry remains and bits want to waste in the abv bin, so I packed a Raw cone for a future random occasion where a mild joint might be appropriate.

I had a medicated caramel at dinner before walking over to the Stevie Wonder concert in Seattle last night. I realized that this mild joint was in my bag, and suggested to one of our companions that we could smoke it while we walked a few blocks to the arena, but told them what it was. Companion who is occasional ent had never had CBD, and this was probably 1/3 high CBD originally. With the THC dropped but more CBD than they had ever had, they reported a very relaxing complex high that was long lasting but never too intense. I still smoke a monthly bong hit or two recreationally, so I Katie now what is should taste like, and it just tasted very weak with finished flavor to go along with potency. But I do admit that I heavily extracted the kief. If someone took an attitude that they would use a 4 piece grinder but try not to purposefully force anything to push it through the grinder, I'm sure I wouldn't notice.

So, I decided I needed another small 2 piece American made grinder. I've always said nothing I ever used worked better that a simple 2 piece Space Case grinder. But I wanted to see if I could find anything heavier or easier to grip, but still at the 2" diameter small size.

I discovered that Mendo Mulcher makes a double height 2 piece model at about the $20 price as the Space Case. I'm impressed, as it had about twice as many teeth as my Space Case and the extra height is definitely easier to grip.

I tested it with a third of a gram of material. Three one half turns created a very even medium grind that didn't turn much of anything to powder. Also, there were not any oversized pieces stuck in the teeth. It's a good thing I stopped to check it though, because twice as many the teeth sure get right to work!

Here's some photos. Both a comparison beside a Space Case and then a little gratuitous vapor porn.
