110v Inverters

Living in a country that does not run on 110v I some times feel we are missing out on a lot of cutting edge design and technology that comes out of the US.
My question is, what are peoples experiences with either step down transformers or power inverters.
I am leaning towards inverters for the frequency, but I love old school for reliability.

My 250w isolated stepdown from Jaycar has been great, anything that doesn't rely on the AC frequency of US outlets will run well on it. A power inverter however would mitigate the frequency issue methinks. This would provide a way for us to use the cloud evo perhaps?

Could we run a 12vDC psu (with appropriate cables) into a 12v DC to 110V AC inverter to still be running from the AC outlet rather than a car battery?

I think we may have discussed this somewhere in the haze.
Yes it was someone's frustration with the evo that prompted this post.
