PBW & the Chemistry of Clean

Has he even tried ISO or pbw?

I tried metho once, smelled like shit, was crap at shifting resin (I was cleaning a combustion piece for a friend at the time) and took quite a few water rinses to get all the residue out...

Bleh.

He he:lol: Me too,the smell of metho makes me want to heave.

Im glad I found PBW

ISO is expensive here in Australia,$25 or so for 1/2 litre shipped to my place.

I usually make edibles with ABV so I just needed something to keep my glass clean.
I picked up some PBW a while ago...thoughts.....really nice results, sparkling glass every time.

My method....I measure one slurpee straw spoon of PBW into my wash. usually 300ml of alkaline water in a Pyrex jug.

microwave on high for 80 seconds.

while the microwave is doing its thing ,I fill & preheat my dirty glass with hot water to prevent too much temperature stress to the glass when I add the hot as PBW wash.

Remove hot PBW from microwave when it's ready.toss out the water keeping your e glass hot.

Fill glass with hot PBW. Add a rubber stopper to lower holes in glass so maximum amount of wash can be added to glass.

wash and leave it for a few minutes.Rinse and celebrate it's the weekend with clean glass and no more work :D

ha ha ,thanks to t dub for finding this.its a perfect solution if You don't reclaim.
On the subject of reclaim i have an idea..... to do a run through a reflux or a pot alcohol still. Not sure it would work well though.

Ran out of PBW few weeks ago (small $2 bag from my local brewing supply store). So I upgraded to a 1Lbs. Tub of it, arriving today (LOVE Amazon prime).

I miss this stuff, worked so great at keeping my pieces crystal clear (especially since I use cranberry extract religiously in all my glass)

I am getting mildew spots in my D020. Once a week I scrub away at the spots with ISO/salt and simple green. Not all at once. Is there an easier way to scrub the mildew or prevent it. I use cranberry extract and dump it every morning and start new. If I don't dump it it will get slimey and moldy fast. So am I doing something wrong or do you have any suggestions. I know it would be best to dump at night but I am lucky if I remember to turn of the Enano before bed.:ko:

Damn, how much Cranberry Extract are you using??? I put at max 3 drops in my D020 and I go 3 days between changing the water

Are you sure its mildew? Once when using Simple Green I had it "stain" an imperfection in my glass and it looked exactly like mildew. Very difficult to remove.

Also, what kinda extract you using? Some like the BC separate a bit and look kinda "slimy" in the bottom when the color settles a bit, but its not biological contamination . . . yet.

I also use a drop of iodine in my mix and sanitize my glass regularly by finishing with One-Step. Sanitizing glass really helps keep things cleaner longer.

I add one drop of Iosol Iodine to my water, along with a few drops cranberry extract. I do use boiled distilled water, so there is no (other) biologicals to deal with.

I've been cleaning with PBW almost every Sunday. No issues at all.

I had mildew/mold spots in my Do20 after not changing the water for about 2-3 days. I tried everything, Iso, bleach, simple green. PBW was the only thing that ended up working after a few rinses with near boiling water

Not glass-related, but PBW is great in the kitchen too! I cook with cast-iron pots & pans so I mostly clean without soap using steel wool, which gets grimy pretty quickly. Instead of constantly buying more steel wool, now I soak it in PBW and voila, back to shiny again.

Hey t-dub! I have black specs on the Frit on my GBD fritted Tube. I have tried all sorts of PBW washes and ISO soaks but it won't come clean. What do you recommend?

I'm about to boil some vape parts. Some are aluminum, some are ss. I'm thinking that the ss can take pbw in the water but the aluminum should be boiled in water alone, maybe a bit of detergent?

I did it really quick, but I'd use very little PBW, and if you care about discoloration (pickling), don't.

Boiling it takes a few seconds, really.

Did you solve your issue?

I recently had a spot on one of my pieces that was being extra stubborn. Finally took some sodium hypochlorite to clean it out. Thanks @t-dub

CLR is your best bet. If your looking for a home solution try acids like vinegar, citric etc.

I don't know about that but after you do get it clean, you may want to consider using only distilled water in the future. I have a jug around just for the bubbler.

Yes indeed I have come to this conclusion myself,do you buy the distiller water or do it yourself?

I just buy it. It's cheap and lasts a long time.
I maybe use same water for 3 or 4 sessions and then dump.

My Mobius Ion only needs about 1/3 cup to fill properly
