Crafty/Crafty+ by Storz & Bickel

I tried the liquor pad with one dabs worth and it was really weak hits even at full blast. I'll try a bunch lol

I haven't done solids but I did put a bunch of shatter in the liquid pad. The hits are never ending . . . :ko:
Do you think it will work just as well?
I have no experience with concentrates at all except the ones I reclaim.
Do solids work the same as shatter or wax with other vaporizers?

@VapeNStone
You could also try it sandwiched between two layers of herb.

I'm pasting this comment from the following source (http://www.vapecritic.com/vaporizers/crafty/) as I thought this aspect coming from a disabled person, in this case a blind person, was very interesting and not talked about before on this thread.

I want to give my input on the Crafty from a different perspective. I am blind and absolutely love this thing. It is an outstanding example of a concept called “inclusive design”. In a nutshell, that means creating products that work with as many of the five senses as possible to create a better experience for everyone regardless of ability or disability. Storz and Bickel nailed it with this vaporizer.

The vibration feedback is fantastic and is way more than a gimmick. It can be felt as well as heard and when combined with the LED conveys status information to the user through three senses. Since vaporizers in general provide sensations of taste and smell, that means the Crafty interacts with users through all five senses. I am not aware of any other product ever that has managed to accomplish that feat. Any potential user will be able to know what is going on with the unit. That multi-sensory feedback together with the one button operation makes the Crafty friendly to just about everyone and in a wide range of use scenarios. You do not even really need a functional finger to push the button (pushing it against a knuckle, edge of a table, or even a tooth will work perfectly) so the unit could even be used by somebody with limited use of their hands. Loading and unloading are also super easy. As a blind person I can do it unassisted without any problem. There has not been a need to thoroughly clean yet but I do not anticipate too much trouble. The chamber and screens are a breeze. The cooling unit seems do-able as well but they also sell complete replacement cooling units for $19. Worst case, I could probably use one for a couple months without cleaning it at all then just replace it with a new one.

The smart phone app provides a huge advantage that you have not considered. Yes, it provides basically the same information and functionality as the display on the Mighty. But, there is one very big advantage to the app. Smart phones already have a wide range of accessibility features already built in to the OS or available through third parties. That makes the Crafty accessible to a very wide range of people with disabilities; people who have already figured out how to make a mobile device work for them in the ways that they need. I, for example, use the screen reader (Voice Over on iOS, Talkback on Android) and can access all of the information and functions that the Crafty offers. A simple display on a vaporizer cannot do that.

The Crafty is an impressive device that is also wonderfully accessible. And, that accessibility has actually made the use experience better for everyone. I really wish that many more products in the world were designed like this one. Huge kudos go to the Storz and Bickel design team. I suggest that the Crafty be your first suggestion to anybody with a disability or serious health issue.

The performance and efficiency of this thing also just blow me away. After a few days of use, I have tentatively settled on a base temperature of 190 C/374 F and a boost temperature of the maximum 210 C/410 F. I vape on the base temp until the flavor is gone then I do several more pulls at max to make sure I have wrung out all of the goodness from the material. No need for me to see the vapor that way. I am admittedly something of a lightweight, but using the Crafty this way I can get [good results] using 0.1g of material or even less. Along with all of its other benefits, this vaporizer is going to eventually pay for itself through conservation of material.

I have not found the auto-shutoff to be a problem. To prevent it from kicking in I act sort of like I am timing my draw with a stopwatch. I click the button at the start of the draw and then click it again at the end of the draw. That gives a full minute to relax in between. Works great and is easy to become automatic. This is not unlike how you recommend just squeezing the handle of the Plenty every time it is picked up.

I'm quite moved by this review. I found his unique insights eye opening, and like a number of fellow posters throughout FC discussing the difficulty our color blind friends suffer with colored indicators, it nudged me out of my paradigm, to consider the world outside my experience. It's fair to say a blind man helped me to see more clearly.
It would be great if this poster, "Glenn", joined us here at FC. so he might partake of the wealth of FC love and support.
@oli if you're already signed up on that site, would it be too much to ask of you to extend an invite to Glenn to come visit our compassionate community?
I've no doubt he would be warmly embraced.

And bravo to S&B, for serving the world such a considered device.
It will be on my signature.

I totally forgot commenting on that. This really seems like a small revolution in the vape market.
I'm also sure that Glenn would like it here on FC. He could even offer a unique perspective to a lot of topics discussed here. I know I would have so many questions about his whole relationship to herb and maybe if the effects differ in the way he experiences them.
Awesome review!

I tried the abv from the crafty in the solo and did not really get anything to come out of it.
Also I decided to give the solo a try with non abv, I noticed that the solo vapor is indeed harsher. I think I can now start appreciating the Craftys method of extraction, almost like a subtlety of purity which translates into the actual effect.

I guess Its kind of like when I first tried vaporization, it didn't seem as strong as combustion because of the lack of extra byproducts, It did not take me long to learn to appreciate the purity. I think my transition from the solo to the crafty experience is similar but at a more subtle scale.
Honestly, so glad to hear this!
I was starting to think I had gone crazy and had been secretly brainwashed to become a S&B fan boy without even realising it hahahaha.

I implore you to use a medium grind (of the same material, relatively dry) and try one bowl of each to see the difference in vapor output.
I have harped on about it, but flavour is held better by the crafty (past the first drag or two of the solo), bigger clouds, and smoother.

I will do my testing to confirm on the weekend. I'm not a lightweight, but back to back bowls from a solo and then (especially) a crafty.... Way too much lavender for a weeknight!
Will need to call in a friends assistance to get better cross section/sample space.

When you say not much smoke from the crafty abv in solo... You still got some? Was it pretty much a negligible amount?

I must hit hard because I have yet to ever have it auto shut off on me. And I can't seem to hit it soft enough to not make the heater go down?
I'm almost 2 weeks in and it has only shut off on me once and I've never pressed the button to keep it on (and to be honest it happened when I gave it to a friend).

So long as you take deep draws it works for me. But outside ambient temperature is a factor I feel. As I'm able to hit the red led** quicker with cooler outside air.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about:
**I have noticed with a big draw it will start to go into heat up mode again and the led will go red (from green). As far as I can tell, this is to let you know if the draw was big enough to reset the timer.

Hey guys, does anyone try to use a EQ domed screen yet, I would think the herb chamber is big/deep enough to take it?
Would be a nice gimmic to use them as a kind of preload capsule or instead of the oil pad s&b offered??
Maybe the cooling unit as well as the heating chamber would stay clean longer ???

TIA

Nobody answered my question :( lmao how much is can you put in along with the oil pad? And if you use the oil pad as a spacer, is there any fall off in quality

If you can melt the concentrate into the liquid pad you should be fine. Anything with enough plant matter to not melt might be better suited to vape with herb. I'm not sure though since I have never tried it.

Edit: The Liquid Pad takes a bit to get saturated but once there performs well.

T-Dub are you putting the concentrate on top of the pad or under it? I tried some on top but didn't have much luck. Mind you I didn't persevere with it though. Concentrates are super expensive for me so I really dislike wasting any.

Thought ill share my views of the crafty after using it for a week. I initially wanted to write out a review but if you read @Thcgos views, i would say that my thoughts compare similarly!

Pros:

The effortless ease of the draw! I’ve only used the vapes in my signature, all of which require some practise and finesse to get the most out of it, so when i first used it really was a revelation! Just pull on it till your lungs can pull no more! It is so effortless, you get big lung busting hits, you can actually even feel your lungs filling up with warm vapour (it’s a weird sensation and get ready for a coughing fit :ko:)

Extraction wise, I’m very happy, it really extracts fast and complete. I tested by running the crafty's ABV at 210 through the solo, connected to my bong at 7. I didn’t get any noticeable vapour. I didn’t run the test in reverse though. The main advantage of the fast extraction and the low draw resistance is how it makes the crafty so much stealthier. Stealth was/is of utmost importance to me, and i can cram the crafty down my jeans pocket, then turn it on and wait for the vibration. then when it’s good to go, 4-5 massive inhales is all i need to extract the goods from a half filled chamber with the oil pad! (For what it’s worth I can’t see my solo ever matching the crafty in visible vapour, would love to know how that guy here managed that!)

Another thing about the extraction is that I can go pretty low on the temperatures. The 180c default is great but I experimented at 165 and 170c and i got very tasty and visible clouds. i probably got a few less draws vs. at 180c but that’s kind of to be expected. I save the ABV from the lower temps and then vape at 200 at night. I have to point out that the solo can only start at 185c so as someone who loves going low, this is a major plus!

cons:

Someone here mentioned that they got vapour leakage through the mouth piece. I can confirm that this happens, however only at certain orientations. At night when in bed, with all the light sources switched off, I had the crafty heated up to 180c, held it upright, and by using the light from my phones screen I can see some vapour escape. This however is very minor in my opinion, and is almost solved by tucking the draw piece back in. also by drawing after the crafty has been switched off, you can eliminate most of the residual vapour and the smell. Having said that, as far as smell stealth is concerned its got nothing on my Indica.

The stirring tool, slots in a way that blocks the micro usb port. Maybe that was how S&B designed it but if i want to charge then i have to remove the tool from its slot and then remember to put it back in after, potentially making it something you could lose. Not a very elegant solution, just a small niggle in a otherwise very well thought out product!

Battery life: what people have been saying here is anecdotally true from my experience. I would say that i can get about 3-4 bowls half loaded with the oil pad. But the way I see it, I would rather have my vape extract fast and save me time, than have the vape extract so slow and conserve battery.

The sweets that i got with my mflb purchase were better!

This is probably my biggest beef as well. I'm sure I'm going to lose that tool pretty fast. Thankfully, replacements are not too expensive.

Try briefly touching the power button on Crafty, or plug it in, to wake up the BlueTooth. What happened to the first one?

Thanks, but tried that. Also fully powered it up (tested app) and back down (tested app) a few times with no luck.

As to the first one, let's just say it got permanently borrowed by a buddy of mine. ;)

It was connected just fine before it just stopped on the third bowl. So it's not a compatibility issue with my phone.

Do I have a bluetooth failure in my brand new Crafty?

Hm.. Is there a hard-reset function on the Crafty? Some reset button that can restore it to factory settings? If so I'd try that in combination with reinstalling the app and disabling/enabling bluetooth.
Also is there an android device you can test it on, or another Apple device that will work with the Crafty app? This will isoalate the problem to the Crafty, or to your phone specifically.
