I've been kind of broadening my perspective on the Volcano by reading thru this thread and seeing the perspectives and ideas of other people. It has led me to theorize a new technique which I just tried out to apparent great success, and I may end up incorporating this new technique into my routine. It requires a couple extra moves, and I'm not sure if it would work with Easy Valve because I always use Solid Valve, with .1 to .125 grams of material at a time. By the way for those questioning the efficiency of the Volcano, that's 8 to 10 fresh balloons per gram of material.

I have for years been in the camp of attaching the balloon right away, instead of blowing hot air for 3 or 10 seconds before attaching balloon. Because I would rather take an extra breathe worth of air and have the balloon be a little more diluted, instead of lose the first, and perhaps best, bit of vapor off every fill.

My idea was to fill the chamber, attach the balloon, blow the hot air for around 5 seconds, then turn the balloon off, then leave the filling chamber on the Volcano to keep heating up, attach the mouthpiece to the balloon, inhale the 5 seconds worth of air, then remove the mouthpiece, then re-attach the balloon to the filling chamber that is still sitting on the Volcano, then fill the balloon as usual.

The advantages are you get a most delicious initial hit from the first 5 seconds instead of wasting that initial hit, and also after you turn off the initial air blow, the chamber will continue to heat up and the heat will diffuse a bit, readying the herb chamber for the normal hot-air blowing process.

I used to do something like that, except I used two balloons witch I chain filled (I have two solid valve kits)

It's even better when you can save a bag that will be used only for flavor hits.

Now the old is new again, where the first hit is best. But its good that hits #3 thru #X off of one fill are all as good as hit #2.

It stands to reason that S&B took into account the same customer feedback about waterpipe compatibility when designing the Easy Valve that they did when designing the Plenty. The solid valve was designed before they took that feedback into account. Even though the diameter of the screen surface is wider with the Easy Valve than the Solid Valve, I think that the Easy Valve may also be diametrically sized to fit with a waterpipe setup. Maybe I'll have to get an Easy Valve Filling Chamber for Herbs one of these days.

I make my own 'easy valve' bags and will knock up a little one just for this purpose.

Thanks

So thanks to a customer at our shop a friend and I are now the proud new owners of a used digital volcano, solid valve. The guy bought it and never really used it so it's in good condition and we were able to barter him down to ~270$.

So my question that I personally have no experience with is how best to make use of the concentrate pad. I understand that It would be best with a full melt concentrate but which of my current stash would be best out of shatter, crumbles, or saps I'm still not certain. How does the volcano do with less melty concentrates such as a cold water bubble hash if so how do you prep that up? What temperature is a good temp to vape a concentrate at typically?

Finally what does one do to clean the concentrate pad?

Very nice, I actually stumbled upon that you-tube video already but was a tad concerned about melt managing to get all the way down into the heating element. Sometimes complete idiots make "guides" and put it on youtube so I was skeptical about that at first. But thank you for lending credibility to that method and I likely will try that soon enough.

Compared to a good size dab, how much shatter / crumble would be a good amount to put on the oil pad?
Have you replaced your oil pad yet or found a way to clean it effectively?

I've used the concentrate pads a few times, each time using a good amount of oil. My conclusion is that you're just better of dabbing the oil. I cranked up the volcano to 9 and was able to get some bags but none of them were really thick and I wasn't very impressed.

I have never replaced the pad.
I let it sit for a while in Iso (91%) and then dry it.
Replacement would be needed if the wires became frayed, or unwound beyond your ability to shape them nicely.
A dab is about all I put on the pad, but sometimes a double. Needless to say the single dab gets consumed more completely and cleanly.

More Volcano pad fun:
I clean out wax jars with Iso, and save that golden liquid.
I place liquid in a small glass, and let it start to evaporate.
When there is little left, I throw my volcano pad in there and let it lay flat.
As the liquid vanishes, once in a while I flip the pad over to let the contents distribute evenly.
when it is completely dry, I vape it (adding no other concentrate)
It gives very thick vapor of high flavor profile, due to it's even distribution on the wires.
It does get messy this way , and runs onto the chamber some...
I learned to carefully using a hemostat to hold pad, hit the edges with a fine torch, to force the contents around the very edge to move more toward the center, prior to installing the "juiced up" pad into the chamber.

Vaping oil using a bag is not supposed to be a dab-like experience.
The purpose is to spread the medication from that dab into a large bag, so that it may be inhaled over a good number of hits.
This is for patients that do not like the intense pressure (and to some with softer lungs.. discomfort) from a dab... but who would like to get all of the "goods" from the wax/shatter/etc at an even ingestive pace.

Using the heat to scare the concentrate away from the edge of the pad is a great Idea that I probably would have never intuitively caught on to, thanks for that tip. That does make sense and I do get what you men by that.

So, I thought, what about buying a second solid valve and a 2nd mouthpiece?

you could attach to the other end of the ballon and breath the vape away while it is running, making for a more "direct hit"-approach.

Since the air output is higher than your inhaling, the bag will fill anyway and then you can share the bag with 2 people simultanously.

Whatya think?

The fan can no way keep up with your lungs pal.

I like the idea of a 'love bag' though. Make it heart shaped and its a winner.

I thought about it since I have two solid valves, but never tried for convenience reasons. If you like the idea why not after all.

...fresh vapor instead of fresh + stale all mixed to the same blandness in a bag, and more control over the vaping process. With direct draw you can stop after one or two hits and shut the vape down if you like. If you fill a bag you're committed to either consuming the whole bag, or wasting part of it. Save half the vapor in the bag for an hour and you'll lose a lot of that 2nd half to condensation.

But you do know that you don't have to fill a whole bag? It's just human, we have to make the biggest, densest ballon and puff it right away, while in reality, just turn your volcano on and off after 10-15 seconds of output and you got a damn tasty direct-hit like vapor in it. You also don't have to waste anthing. Filling a whole bag (or making a 3ft one) is just a thing for partys etc.

If I'm vaping, I inhale, let the vape sit in the lungs for a few seconds (like advised in the Volcano manual) and then blow out. While I hold my breath, the Volcano sure can fill the bag or not?

Yes, I've known that for many years, but no matter how little you put in a bag, it still goes in a plastic bag first, instead of your mouth. If you think it's as fresh as direct draw, good for you, but it doesn't work for me. You can't make a bag filler's minus into a plus. It is what it is.

When I originally got my volcano, I was very impressed with how much nug I was saving. I used to pack a chamber and it would get 3 good bags and the 4th was okay. I sent my volcano in for repairs and now it seems to only get 3 bags (the vapor gets light towards the end of 3rd bag) out of one chamber. I usually keep the temp dial between 6 1/2 and 7. What about you guys?

It sounds like they adjusted the heating element, if the same load gets done in 3 good bags, rather than 3 and an extra "ok" bag.
I would try at 6 and see if that gives the performance you experienced before.
Then try it at 7.5
either a bit higher or lower should get you the results you experienced before.
If you are using a new or freshly cleaned chamber, that can make some difference also.

Did someone say direct hit?

I do the same thing. Pretty awesome. :)

One crazy thing I've tried is using the volcano to blow into the bottom of a cloud and then a bag on top using the ez valve gong attachment. It blows a lot denser bag using less weed then the volcano can make on it's own.
