@the ob and @Zondo the conversation about which pen and wicking would probably be better served in another thread or in a pm since it's off topic. However, the making of any oil that is vapable with the MB machine is definitely on topic here.

And I, for one, am all eyes... So please, if either of you have a way to do it that is successful, post how you did it in detail.

Well I just got a different pen and now it works with the recipe I did, which shows the recipe is good. Here is what I got for you using the machine. I used shake and no alcohol for this to make it inexpensive.

Step 1. 2.5 oz of shake decarbed 25-30 mins @ 250F. Prepare to have the entire house be high.
Step 2. Combine decarbed bud, 1.5 cups of vg, and 1/4th cup pg into the machine.
Step 3. Set temp to 160F for 4 hours. (Use 130F for 4 hours if in higher altitude such as Colorado)
Step 4. Go through 4 hours of annoying noise every 10-15 mins, so I wouldn't do it while people are sleeping. Then it's merely drain it. Be prepared to get a tired arm if you're trying to really extract the liquid, until it looks like charcoal.

ok. here goes my really long post with a million questions and comments on the MB machine.......

To start, I received it today. it is a really nice looking and feeling device. the packaging was great and it shipped super quick.

I want to start with the butter questions. the range given for the flower is 14-20g and for the butter, 2-5 cups.

I am a person who generally likes precise instructions. my friends say I should bake because it uses more precision than cooking. How is one supposed to calculate the proper dosage with a range that is so wide? I would love to see a list or sticky of more precise measurements that maybe we can post on this site. also, I am guessing people are using shake? although some seem like they are using the good stuff. My question is that doesn't that make the final yield a expensive product?

btw, ill touch on the lectin subject later :)

cooking oil.

it recommends coconut oil, but I know there are many oils that one can use? I also know that vegetable oil is not recommended, but others have mentioned other oils that can be used? I would love to add this to the list :) there are nut oils (almond) peanut, avocado olive etc. I am curious about everyones experiences with the different ones.

Tincture.

I find this one especially fascinating because of what I mentioned above. I have always been under the impression that VG would not emulsify properly so I am wondering how this is coming out for everyone. It seems like that without a emulsifying agent (here comes the lectin) it would not work.

Now, I know people so far seem to be against the lectin that they are recommending. I am wondering if anyone knows a emulsification agent that could be used instead for the tinctures. Fats help with this, but when making the tinctures I am not sure if this would work or not. Thoughts?
also, other than ever clear or VG are there other things we can do? I have to say I am still a little sketched out by using ever clear even know I bought some.

General thoughts and comments.

could this machine be used with oils that one has already created and mixed with other ingredients for a final product? I mean if you had CO2 oil, mixed in ingredients to make say a candy, could it be used for this purpose as well?

After you have created your oil, and placed it into a pan to burn off the alcohol, how does one know exactly when the alcohol is COMPLETELY burned off?

That should work for now. :)

the range given for the flower is 14-20g and for the butter, 2-5 cups.
I think this range is given because people use different "product," (ie shake, bud, trim). Stands to reason you would need more trim than good bud. I use the old "gold standard" of an oz. of good bud to a pound of butter. Because I use trim, I double that amount of herb. Best I can do.... it's not an exact science.:shrug:

Now, I know people so far seem to be against the lectin that they are recommending.
I think you may be confused here. Originally, they called for soy lecithin. Many felt this was an unhealthy option and opted for sunflower lecithin instead.

I am still a little sketched out by using ever clear even know I bought some.
Why are you sketched out, lol? You could use another high proof alcohol, but Everclear has been shown to be the best to use because it doesn't have all the sugars.

I mean if you had CO2 oil, mixed in ingredients to make say a candy, could it be used for this purpose as well?

If you have the newer model that has a no heat cycle I would think so. But maybe check with the MB people first.

Sup Buddies. I'm in the game, mine showed up yesterday. If any of you follow me, you know im a serious fricken expert in edibles, I use the sun oven, pressure cooker, mason jar technique, microwave instant (put 1 tbsp peanut butter with 1/4 tsp lecithin in the microwave for 30 seconds, add ground herb and nuke on meduim for 30 more eat and byebye!).

So im trying to say I like to experiment and have alot of experience.

Now, what strikes me as odd, is the necessity of 2 cups oil/glycerine and no water.

The no water thing is baddass, but its the reason you have to use so much damned herb in this thing just for a run.

So my thoughts are this: use water to use less herb

For example: 1/2 cup cocoa butter to 1/2 ounce BOB (best of the best). 1 1/2 cup water.
Run for 4 hours on 180. Filter through the bag, put in the fridge to separate the water. Done. No fucking logic reason in hell this would not work barring a mechanical problem with heating water in the machine.

Yet the manual repeats "DO NOT ADD WATER" like its the devil. So I wrote to them and am waiting for the answer.

I want to make the equivalent strength of 2 ounces of herb to 2 cups of butter and I dont want to have to use 2 zs of the best to do it.

I always thought that water was useful for the removal of chlorophyll?
Yes it is. But it's also how I concentrate my cocoa butter before making chocolate. Cocoa butter has almost no saturation point - its rock hard so it will hold as much THC as you give it. Therefore for example you could still use 2 ounces of herb, and just 1/2 cup of cocoa butter, 1 1/2 cups of water, and theoretically, once you remove the water (freeze) the remaining cocoa butter will be holding all that THC. The resulting chocolate bars I make will knock you on your ass with a nibble.

Likewise for trim, you can take 2 pounds of trim and reduce it to nothing in a vita-mixer with water. Then just add your coca butter and steal all that good oil. Just a pain in the ass to squeeze out, get a press....

I'm not sure what to do with my life right now. After getting another vape pen last night the oil was nice and smooth and.. I don't think I actually got high, but I was extremely chill and able to function fine. As I'm going through the night, I notice I'm going back to a normal state of mind. I start puffing and puffing and just get no effect, however can still get throat hit. I tried to rinse out the vape pen as best as I could, but only detaches at mouth piece and battery (CE4). At the end of the night, I probably drained out at least 3 ml of oil into the sink.

So at this point idk if the vape pen sucks or if its the oil. I kinda feel like it may be the oil just being too darn thick since it's mostly vg? I ended up putting a decent amount of pg into the vile, however I guess the thick oil already did the damage to the wick. Any thoughts? Anybody tried the same non alcohol recipe that magical butter staff gave me? Not sure if I should just wait for my vape parts to come into the mail which i can clean the wicks and such or if I should just try to make a new batch either as 50/50 pg/vg or 70/30. Please give me your thoughts. :hmm:

my thoughts are : I have yet to use a Glycerine extracted with heat pen juice that as much of any effect other then taste and eventually a headache. Id say you are better off doing the RSO trick and adding that to your glycerine...

as @momofthegoons mentioned, we probably need to move some of this to another thread. if you do, I am happy to chime in there with what I know about all of that :)

Funny you should bring this up because I've been thinking along the same lines, especially when it comes to using butter in the machine.

I know that one person was advised to add water when making her, I believe, tincture because of how hot her area is. Her tincture was drying up in the machine and burning because of the evaporation.

So.... I can't see why not. Especially when doing something like butter which is so hard to strain when used how the manual says. Unless it's cause of the lecithin? So tell you what I'm going to do. I'm going to take myself into the kitchen right now and decarb some trim. And do a butter run. I'm adding water. And making tootsie rolls with it tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. :science:

shit.... I need sunflower lecithin too.... and I was just at the store!

Already did it. 1/2 cup Cocoa butter, 14 grams of the Gnar Gnar. 3-4 cups water.

Ran for 8 hours at 180. It overflowed a little. Id def rec only using minimum water for this. But easy to clean up, and holy fucking hell, this is some strong cocoa butter. I barely tasted it and it was shocking how strong it is.

No lecithin?

And by cocoa butter do you actually use cocoa butter or coconut oil?

Oh yeah! 1.5tbsp of liqud - I was out of powder...

Gourmet grade cocoa butter. www.chocosphere.com
If you are educated in Chocolateering (took a 6 month class on it with my mom back in the day, we are both chefs), youll know that Cocoa butter is the ONLY thing that will properly bind to chocolate, and have it still be chocolate. Good shelf life, wont melt too easily etc., buy you gotta learn to temper it.

one of the reasons I was never a good cook is that I am not good with "grey area" recipes. I like things to be exact (which I know takes away from the art of cooking) :)

I am getting ready to try the machine for the first time and here are my questions.

I think I am going to start with some gel caps using the coconut oil.

I would ultimately like each capsule to have around a 10mg dosage. I want to create a capsule that the average/occasional user could take and have fun and not freak out. Also, I was just in Colorado and they have been having "heated" discussions about the edible market. One of the things I heard is that they are strongly considering making all edibles conform to a standard dosage of 10mg and each edible should be sold on one-dosage quantities. this is why I have settled on the 10mg as the dosage. for now. :)

my question is that if I want to use flowers, coconut oil and the sunflower lecithin what measurements should I use to start?

thanks in advance!

edit. I know different flowers have different THC contents. I am just looking for a starting point :)

I have a new question. what is the advantage to using water? I mean what does one gain from adding it. @SnidelyWhiplash I am curious about your thoughts....

The advantage is that you can use less oil to more herb.
If normally you take 2 cups of oil to 1 ounce of herb, you get 2 cups of herb oil holding 1 once of weed's THC Correct?
So, if instead you use 1.5 cups of WATER, to 1/2 cup of cocoa butter - then when its done, filter and put in the fridge where it will rise to the top solid, dump your water through a strainer - now you have 1/2 cup of cocoa butter containing the THC of 1 ounce herb. More concentrated. Capisce?
Be well.

@SnidelyWhiplash would you follow the same steps if you wanted to make more potent oil as well? Mine is being delivered today and I really need some strong edibles for my arthritis.... This rain shit sucks.... I always make my butter/oil much stronger then most but admittedly don't know much about cooking with thc. TIA

If you used olive oil, and did the olive-oil RSO technique sure. Just freeze it and spoon the olive oil off the top, chuck the water. But keep in mind, this machine will boil over if you add too much water.

BUT I still theorize that cocoa butter can hold more than anything.
