Crafty/Crafty+ by Storz & Bickel

That just happened...
The crafty will have less then half of the battery life of the mighty unfortunately. Not only does it have half the battery capacity but since they both have the same powered heater that one battery is driven twice as hard. This impacts performance.

Got my Crafty on Monday. Haven't tested is as much as I would like to but I will share my initial thoughts and add to them later, if necessary.

Like the size a lot. Fits very easily in my pocket. I don’t drive so this is extremely important for me. I absolutely love the build quality, love the engineering, and love the vape quality. There are lots of small pieces but they all fit together nicely. The device feels sturdy and well built, albeit with a lot of plastic. I find the vapor to be very strong and very clean. Taste is excellent and might even be a bit better than the Volcano.

For me, the size of the oven is perfect. Not too big, not too small but just right. Like it was made for Goldie Lox.

Biggest concern is that I have been only able to get about three chambers per battery charge. For me, this was a disappointment. I was hoping for more. Just like my old iPhone, while it was easy to charge, I didn’t enjoy being forced to do it so often.

The charging cord is short. A little too short for me. Although it is very cool that you can vape while charging if you are partially charged, the cord is too short for this to practically work.

The LED is really bright. So bright that you really can't charge this thing in your bedroom while you sleep. I would dim the LED but I use an iPhone and the iOS app is still under review. When it comes out, the first thing I will do is dim the LED.

The screen at the bottom of the oven seems impossible to clean. I consider this to be a drawback because it will eventually get extremely dirty.

All in all, I love the device. Just wish the battery lasted longer, that the cord was longer, and that the screen under the oven could be cleaned. Will try my best to answer any questions you good people might have. Can’t wait for the iOS app!

Beam me up.
Very helpful review
..Thank you! Regarding the vapor being "strong", do you mean to say that it is dense, and if so, which temp/s did you use and did the ABV show good color? How does vapor density compare to other vapes you have used ? How was your draw speed? Thanks again!

Welcome to FC! Nice review. In regards to the screen, if it's anything like the Plenty or Volcano I'm pretty sure all it takes is brushing after each session and you're fine. Also, it sounds like you are getting less sessions per charge than I've seen reported so far. Maybe something is up with your unit?

Thanks! Glad to have something to contribute. I've been brushing it each time but I can already see some tiny bits getting through. It's less of a problem with my Volcano because there is a screen holding the material that sits on top of the screen on the device. For the Crafty, the material goes straight on top of the screen that is built into the device.

It's possible I have a bum unit, although I would be surprised if Storz shipped anything that was not extensively tested. I've inquired with Storz to try and determine if that is the case. Will also continue to test and report back on how long it lasts over a larger sample of charges.

Amount of sessions may also vary from user to user depending on usage habits

Very true. Not sure how to use it more efficiently but would be eager to hear any suggestions that you or others might have about maximizing battery life.

Yes, the vapor is dense. Especially on boost mode. I have been using the default temp and then increasing to the boost temp when the vapor density weakens. The ABV looks almost identical to the ABV from my Volcano. Not burned or singed. Although I have used a number of vapes, my experience is limited with all of them except the Volcano. I've been using a Volcano since before most other vapes hit the market. On boost, the vapor seems denser than the Volcano.

You may wish to try adding an extra screen to cover the original for more debris filtration. It may or may not hinder draw effort. Please let us know.

Haven't personally used one yet, so I unfortunately can't suggest anything. But, I know from experience with Thermovape T1 that usage habits can play a factor with how many sessions you can get out of some portable vapes.

I think having an app to run the devise is a nice option but I would rather have all my controls right there with my unit. I like to have a range of temp controls but I don't want to be dependent on an app to get me there. It looks like a very nice unit and the price will come down a little later on.

I don't quite understand why S&B opted for an external operating system for temp selections. Why not just build in 3-6 popular user selectable vape temps via dial or readout? Charging w/USB is wonderful, but USB for temp programming just seems more gimmicky to me than practical.

Agree 100%. Storz & Bickel is known for quality products, I can't imagine using this for the next 10 years and having to have my phone with me to change the temp. When I'm medicated (all day) I don't want to go anywhere near my cell phone.

Re: less battery life, it depends a lot on how the person uses it. I can finish a stem on my Solo faster than the 12 minute session but need to do high temperatures and with a water path to achieve that, otherwise I need the whole 12 minutes to do it try at my preferred temperatures. I think if I could do 6-7 dry from the get-go I could finish the stem faster, but I really don't like the high temperatures when vaping dry. I prefer 2-4 usually.

If it starts the 1 minute time-out every draw, that could definitely impact life. 1 load at higher temperatures vs 1 load at lower temperatures. It could be 3-5 minutes to finish 1 load at higher temperatures compared to 15+ minutes if you're after flavor with low temperatures and like sipping on it instead of back-to-back or faster-paced hits. Or a longer session with sipping but at higher temperatures. The battery life is impacted by the initial heat-up to your selected temperature, when you hit it it has to heat up back to temperature, and it also has to maintain your selected temperature for up to a full minute before shutting off heating occasionally as temperature is lost. It's going to be harder to calculate accurate battery life because it doesn't have a set runtime outside of "1 minute unless you hit it then it resets." With the Solo etc. we have 12 minute sessions and so we can "calculate" battery life with said 12 minute sessions. I think it would be more helpful to state load size, temperature, and how long it took you to vaporize to your desired ABV. Even then it's pretty subjective!

Less moving parts in such a small package, greater reliability and more options.

Less moving parts in such a small package = greater reliability and options.

They could have just wrote the software so you hold the power button til the light changes color like all the other vapes on the market with that system. They totally could have built it in. They should have done that, and used the app to fine tune it, ex: Button takes you to 385 degrees, with app you can tune it to 386, 387 etc between the next temp setting.

Most of the vapes I've used in the last year or two don't give you the option to adjust the LED light or vibrate.

I sent a question to Storz&Bickel about the possibility of more features to the app. More than 2 preset temps would be great if they can program it to the app, also the possibility of turning off the auto switch off- function.

Would such additional features require modifying the brain board inside the unit?

I hope not, and as it is possible to adjust the temp and preset temperature, there might be a "hardware connection" so that it only needs programming. But I hope they answer to my question so that we know for sure.

No, on the Android app there is a firmware option for the unit.
Provided they allow firmware updates, they could program the buttons to do anything... E. G. Long press equals temp 1, second long press enables temp 2... and so on...
Also it could eventually lead to tweakers bringing out their own custom firmwares, to enable these features if storz and bickel get lazy :p.
I doubt there would be many physical board limitations.

Hi - long time lurker here...

Just got the Crafty today. I'll post a more in depth review when I have used it more. Something like the style of that reddit posting out there...I like to be elaborate.

But, I do have the Android app...and I see there are some thread junkies craving for more info, so here are some hopefully fresh insights:

* Someone mentioned that the Mighty auto off is reset by draws. This is true on the crafty. I'll see how this factors in a crowd situation this weekend. Solo - no prob.

* It fits nicely into my skinny jeans pocket. It is thick, but not that noticeable or uncomfortable in the front pocket. If the pocket/storage space is big enough for your large smartphone, it is more than enough for this.

* It heats up quicker than a volcano...but most probably assumed this. I think it is short enough to support stealth efforts.

* As you draw, I can see on the app that the temperature fluctuates very rapidly; really seems like much effort into keeping a consistent temp with a constant draw rate.

* Drawing on it when off gives the impression of a bit of resistance, a bit more than MFLB. But in use, it seems perfect.

I am not as seasoned as most here. Volcano Digit 6 years, MFLB almost 2 years, Extensive Pax experience. Have not used the plenty yet.

I'll help answer any questions until my review...then back to lurking.

I'm noticing that most who have purchased either the Plenty or the Mighty has only had experience with either the 'Cano, the Plenty or the PAX. Is this because most of you purchase your product in the European market or is there another dynamic going on here?

I can't speak for everyone else...

But for me, I am not the mass piece accumulating type. My interest is with key features. And once something seems to meet my basic requirements, I end up sticking with the product.

Based on the video from elmomuzz, the Mighty drops about 10 degrees while drawing fast. With the Crafty, is the initial drop roughly the same or is it more? Just wondering if the 3 watt difference shows up there... And after the temp drops while drawing, does it fluctuate more than 3 or 4 degrees around the lower temp while trying to get up to the set temp while drawing?

Also, I think if the temp drop is consistent and doesn't fluctuate too much while drawing at a constant rate, instead of adjusting your draw, you could adjust the set temps. With the app in front of you, it should be easy to determine how much your preferred draw rate drops the temp. Once you have that number, you could set the target temp at x degrees, knowing that when you draw at your preferred rate, you'll actually be getting a somewhat lower temp of x-y degrees.

I have to say I am not enjoying the delivery process from S & B out of Germany. It is 9am Thursday morning. It has been six days since I placed my order. It was completed the same day. Unfortunately there are no pick ups until Monday morning. Since Monday morning my package has been floating around Germany somewhere and as far as I can tell is still there :(

Can't speak for anyone else but the Mighty was the first portable to catch my interest in quite a while. I've never owned an S&B product but I have tried the Cano (not the Plenty though). Never tried the Pax either.

What really attracts me is the ability to hand around in a group and the low draw restriction. IMO the only thing that keeps the Solo from being a great vape is the draw restriction ( I have the M106 model before the flow was improved).

Those things along with the reliability history of the company made it an appealing buy. I guess I'll know in a few days if it was a good buy or not
