A couple of comments about decarboxylation in liquid phase that the article did not mention:

When making Everclear tinctures, it is not just soaked in alcohol.
Most people that produce tinctures, will then use heat after that Everclear soak, and filtration.
I heat it for 4 to 6 hours just in the reduction phase alone.
The purpose being twofold: to activate the THC AND to reduce the volume of the solution as well as the alcohol content.

Decarboxylation in liquid does take longer.
I believe that this is why when we make traditional butter, it goes for 12 hours.
Maybe that is why I did not care for my results from the machine as much.
I gave samples of the butter from the machine on a half dozen runs, and all patients say that the goods made with traditional butter is double the potency.
Perhaps this is the direct result of the 12 hours cooking time taken with each batch.
I have made a weekly pound of cannabutter (many times more) for 45 years straight.
On a number of occasions I have rushed the process to 5 or 6 hours time, but the butter was never quite as medicating.
I now suspect that it is the 12 hours on the low heat that has enhanced the actual THC content.

Waiting for my MB2 I visit their site daily to see if the expected ship date has changed. Today I notice this new picture . . . an MB2-e? :hmm:

Decarb:
240 Degrees for 60 min
Foil packet on cookie sheet
1 oz KB Coursely ground
(11 pulses in coffee grinder)

Side note: I used an oven thermometer to check that the temp was holding at 240. Found out my oven runs 20 degrees hotter. So the oven was set to 220 but the thermometer read 240 the whole time. After the 60 min I removed the foil packet from the oven and off of the cookie sheet and let it cool on the counter for 30 min.

After decarb I decided to test the strength before putting into the MB. So I put what I decarbed into a mason jar and poured Ever Clear just up to the top so the decarbed material is just barley covered. I waited 3-5 mins and then took a few droppers under my tongue. Whoa! I felt the effects almost instantly which surprised me but then I remembered someone telling me that once decarbed, activated THC is readily absorbable. It was at this point that I decided there was no reason to put this tincture into my MB. I'm really happy with the way it turned out so I don't see why I need the extra step of putting it through the MB - I'm not sure how putting this in the MB will make it "better". I like the idea of leaving my tinctures brewing unstrained and letting them soak up more constituents like chlorophyl (great medicinal benefits) and every bit of that Precious THC.

Like many it seems I originally got the MB to make the decarb process easier - that is the way it was advertised to me - well decarb it does not as my previous attempts to make tincture with MB have proved that. Without a dry decarb all you get is weak tincture with MB.

Conclusion:
With a dry decarb in the oven for a hour and then 5 minutes in the Ever Clear I've made a very potent tincture in about an hour. If using the MB this would take me 4+ hours not including cleaning or the additional oven decarb. This was a game changer for me and also a breakthrough for me and how I medicate. I was able to make this medicine in about an hour and just a few droppers kept me pain free for 8+ hours. I also really like that left unstrained and brewing my tincture will slowly increase in potency as it sits and as my tolerance to it builds. Your thoughts and comments are always appreciated. Thanks folks!

Well I just got off the phone with Eric at Magical Butter and I have FANTASTIC news!!!!! :D

The new machine is indeed called the MB2-e (evolution). It has several important new features and improvements.
  1. A Decarb button on top that initiates a proper decarb cycle (240*F for 30 min)
  2. A lower (130*F) Temp setting for high altitude tinctures and glycerin usage
  3. A no heat function for making smoothies etc
Anyone waiting on the preorder will receive these enhanced units. Units will begin shipping Friday!!! :)

Edit: Magical Butter t-shirts will not be available until close to Christmas.

While 5 minutes in the Everclear does strip, I have a habit of leaving it in the Everclear for days.
I shake vigorously for those days. I do not filter, but rather let sit and then pour it off, before a second Everclear rinse of pulp and squeezing out the juices.
The chlorophylls left in it can be bitter, but that is OK.
4 ounces of finely crushed quality bud can be covered by a bit less than a 1.75 liter bottle of Everclear, with a bit left over in the bottle for the rinse.
I recover about a Liter or a bit more(1.25...sometimes more... it can vary)
This gets reduced in a double boiler, well ventilated, at a low heat, until reduced to ONE cup.
This cup makes 8 one ounce bottles of the tincture that I call "whole Tincture".
I make Glycerin Tinctures as well, but Those stay in solution for 3 weeks, continually on a low heat...
as glycerin does not want to absorb THC and must be encouraged by heat and proximity.
I use the comic analogy of a kid in the hood.
An ethnic person from a country other than USA can come to America, and move to a neighborhood of his ethnic peers. He will rapidly absorb their American mannerisms that are culture specific to their group food/dance/accent/and favored American expressions. (This is Marijuana in Everclear- child being the Everclear.. MJ being the culture)
A white anglo saxon protestant child can move to that neighborhood as well... kid from a privilege background... And he will NOT by his nature, absorb the cultural expressions and habits including food and dance. He does this by constant proximity and heat (This is Marijuana in Glycerin- child being the Glycerin.. MJ being the culture.)

I follow the same principle I use for the Everclear tincture to make ABV tincture, only I use a half pound of ABV as opposed to the quarter pound of Green Flower.
The ABV due to it's increased volume, gives me back a bit less Everclear.
Once this tincture is reduced to 25% original volume, it becomes so thick with constituents, that
crystals begin to form in the vessel that the evaporation must stop right then, or else the syrup becomes too readily crystalized.
While the ABV tinctures made with everclear are stronger than the Whole tincture from flowers, they are less psycho-active in the chatty and smily venue, and are more narcotic feeling.
When following the procedure with ABV, I do not use heat during the evaporation for the dualk purpose of decarboxylation, in that the ABV is de-carbed already.. I simply am evaporating for reduction and potency.

i did a lot of reading and ended up on 240 degrees for 50 minutes for the batch i made last week. makes me happy to see others have found this to be a good temp too. i had to flip a coin a couple times as there are so many opinions out there.

i put 3 oz of ground up bud on the cookie sheet. it may have been a bit too thick of a layer of pot, and i think i'll break the next decarb into two, 1.5 oz batches, for decarb then into the MB2. then again, it might not matter. i'll have to read up on that.

i have a bunch of oil in my freezer in 4 oz bottles. enough to medicate everyday for at least 4 months. :)

i've made 5 batches of oil over the last few months. the last 3 times, i've used 16 OZ of coconut oil and each time i've gotten about 12 ounces of oil after everything was squeezed out.

i thought there was still oil in the ball of drek that is left over but it's very dry when i'm done with it. i'm wondering if the oil evaporates as it's being cooked.

what are your experiences with your return of oil vs the amount of oil you began with?

this latest batch of oil was made with a more indica genetic. although i love the other oil i have it's more sativa, this one is more indica and has a bit less of a high but there is no racing heart, no jitters (only get them if i eat too much), and i slept for 8 hours which is 2 more than usual.

i'll have to test it again to be sure, but i think i'm in love. :)

@stressed cool man! My guess is the loss of oil is from a combo of some cooking off and some still left in the drek. How much botanicals did you use?

Did you decarb at 240 for 50 mins? I got some good results with 240 for 60 mins and my tincture came out pretty strong. My tolerance has built up to it in about a week so I've had to take a bit more each day. I'm wondering if having a few different strains tinctured would help with this as I could alternate between them so my tolerance does not build to just one. I also thought about decarbing smaller amounts at a higher temps and making small test batches of varying temps. Hmmm this could be a fun day

howdy. yep, 240 for 50 mins. the last couple times was about 240 for 30 minutes.

i use 3 oz of bud to 16 of of oil. i always have 3 or more genetics and switch off every day and never have a problem with tolerance. i have 3 genetics of oil plus a bunch of ABV oil. i've only tried the ABV once as i have so much bud oil but it was nice. i'll have to try it a couple more times to see if i like it enough to make more.

the only tincture i ever had that worked was made by a guy who no longer makes it. when i first got the MB2 i was going to make tincture but after a bunch of reading, i decided that coconut oil in capsules was the way to go for me.

4 capsules and i'm sailing.

Its arrived!!! :D Everything looks and feels amazing out of the package, very heavy duty. Getting ready to wipe it down and run a cleaning cycle. There is a slight manufacturing "odor" to remove but I expected this. Here is a pic of the new top with the "No Heat" setting and the new instruction manual.

Oh, the box is meant to be opened from the bottom BTW. Cut the factory seals then lift the box upwards off of the product. This way you won't have the top dropping all over the place like in the videos people put on YouTube . . . ;)
