Severe Coughing Problems lately

Hey guys,

Lately, I've been experiencing a lot of chest tightness and coughing with vaping, especially when I work out or try to sleep. I start coughing, almost uncontrollably. Usually I'm coughing up a lot of mucus as well. When I'm lying down and breathing, it just sounds awful. Like a pipe organ.

I've been messing around with a lot of different vapes and water filtration setups, but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Anyone else experience this and been able to work it out? It's starting to make me quite concerned.

Nah, I smoke very, very rarely. Haven't currently smoked in a couple months. Even when I do, it's a one off thing.

Right now I'm figuring maybe I'm vaping too hard...and wondering if my lungs/ throat just can't keep up to the amount. I have noticed I kinda have a hard telling when I'm high and when I'm not lately.

I think the course of action mayyyy be a T-Break and then see how I feel after that.

Don't know where you live, but where I live, it's the season where the humidity level really drops and the Santa Ana winds pick up and with both those things going on, allergies can be a real problem.

You say that you coughing up mucous. What color is it? If it's clear, it's an allergy. If it's yellow or green, it's an infection.

How about your temps Dr. Plutonius? Maybe some lower temps might help ease your irritation? Just a my guess :) Or too many dabs maybe?

Yup. Tried all sorts of different temps and have laid off the dabs for a good couple weeks now. The temps make vaping easier, but it doesn't change the severe chest tightness.

I'm living in Vancouver, BC right now. It's hard to say if it's humidity because it's fairly wet here year round. The wind has picked up, so maybe that plays a part.

My Mucus is all white/ clear. Si I know it's not an infection. I'm just nervous because I went for a hard run last night and there were a couple moments I was struggling to get air intake.

Yeah, sounds like allergies and regarding struggling to get air (more than usual) when running, that sounds like exercise induced asthma, which can also be attributed to allergies.

That wind picking up can carry all kinds of pollen into your system.

Yeah, I'm stubborn about that.

What relaxes me is that I know vaping isn't a "tar builder" activity, like smoking. The allergies idea makes sense since I do live in Vancouver and have had allergies to a variety of the trees in this area.

Even though you maybe haven't had allergies in the past, a person can get allergies as they get older. It sounds like you need to visit your Doc. It's good that you lay off dabs, they can be hard on the lungs. Probably no waxes or oils, guys don't like going in for a check up but it looks like you need to. I wouldn't tell the Doc that you vape herb, because he will blame all of it on the vaping.

I go into the doctor's fairly regularly for a variety of checkups. I dono't like to go in, but I compete in BJJ actively and am training hard in MMA/ Boxing, so I'm in and out of the doctor's for physicals and checkups regularly. I've dislocated a shoulder twice this year already and sprained the other...I always ask about how my lungs sound when they check (with 'cardio for MMA' being the excuse lol).

I'll probably go in regardless. I was had been thinking I vape too much and the coughing was resulted in my throat/ airway swelling up. But that doesn't make sense ebcause I cough longer and harder when I have a cold and don't have that problem. Allergies honestly seem like the likely culprit right now.

I believe cannabis to be quite an effective expectorant, and maybe some strains bring that out more or less than other strains. I know some research was done in the mid 1970's that pointed in the direction of that as well(being an expectorant not strain specific).

@Dr. Plutonious -- Hope all is well with you and this was just your bodies way of letting you know it had something in there you needed to expell. I have always been an advocate for a good cough and spit session whilst vaping myself. Seems to keep my "air ducts" running smoother.

Dr P. - I have similar pursuits and similar issues. I have bouts of exercise induced asthma and when we flip into certain seasons my childhood hay-fever type allergy may mildly make an appearance. I say mildly because it's nothing more than very very light congestion. I have an inhaler and will go years without using it and then there are rare times where I'm it using ever other day for a few weeks. I can also get a pretty good asthma attack after a run a few times a year. I'm not sure but it seems to me that my body will compensate during the run and cause my lungs to clear up and ignore the allergic reactions until the run is over and then my body says...Ok, runs over, let the allergy and asthma kick in full force.

One of my favorite past-times is seriously baked long runs. I had an episode where it was cold out and when I finished the run and got back to the house I could feel a little asthma getting ready to kick in so I hit the inhaler and my airway immediately closed up tight. I fell to my knees wondering if 'this is it' since I couldn't draw a breath in or out. Just before I was about to black out my airway cleared just enough to allow me to fill my lungs so I filled them and kept them filled by not emptying them and took tiny breaths till I was sure my airway wasn't going to lock up again. Doctor said the cold and maybe some of that mild allergy caused my vocal cords and airway to become sensitive during the run....hard kick/run at the end in the cold and breathing through the mouth as well as my nose....then coming into the warm house and hitting the inhaler before acclimating was all it took. Up till this episode the mild allergy and rare mild exercise induced asthma didn't faze me at all.

I mention the above for two reasons... One because I could tell when a mild reaction was coming and prior to the episode above I'd ignore it. I don't ignore it now. Two...I noticed that depending on which vape I use I can feel a sensitive reaction. The MFLB can cause a slight cough and an asthma like sensitivity at the back of my throat. The Solo doesn't cause me any issues and strangely enough combustion doesn't cause me any issues at all. Maybe you could try another vape if the one your using is causing you to cough?

Here's what I'd suggest ...Before the run .... If I can feel a tiny bit of allergy or a very mild wheezing BEFORE running and before vaping I will take a half Benadryl with me during the run and about a half hour before I'm concluding the run I'll take it. That way it's kicking in as I complete the run. I actually keep a half Benadryl with me when I run just in case.

My brother who has really serious asthma tells me I'm crazy and running isn't worth it. I've told him...mixing a good bake and a runners high is hard to pass up.

I've also had a chronic (but I wouldn't quite describe it as "severe") cough for the past couple years. This last June, I abstained for a full month, and round about the end of the month, my cough was 95% gone. Then when I resumed in July (smoking, not vaping -- I'm only a recent vaping convert), the cough came back to the point where I needed cough syrup before bed to allow me to sleep. So I'm pretty sure it was caused by the smoking. So, I abstained again for about 20 days (until my new Vapormax arrived), and since vaping, I seem to be in a holding pattern. Cough is much better than it was, but still present.

You actually have to ingest over .001g in a load to do that. Maybe if you saved up what you vape in a week, and load that, you would cough too.

No, but seriously, I can blow out HUGE clouds from my LSV without coughing at all and that's after holding it in for about 15 seconds and doing 3 to 4 rebreathes on the same hit.

Cool. I can dab .03gm of 87% Raspberry dreamer clear concentrate in my Nectar Collector or Versa Infinity and cough like a s.o.b. or not at all. Which still does nothing to dispel cannabis as an expectorant.

Can't tell if @lwien just trolling or...busting my stones...or...

I have an uncle who eats like 300,000 scoville rated hot peppers like candy. Doesn't mean those ain't some HOT ass peppers though.

Trolling? I never troll. I do run 20 miles a week though and haven't had a cigarette in over 40 years so that may have something to do with it.

if ur not chokin' ur not tokin' :)

I used to hardly ever cough, but a few years of cigarettes later (and still after switching to the e-cig), now i cough a lot.

Again, imo, we're vaping an expectorant, we are supposed to cough some.

At least in my case, I seldom cough during or for several hours after vaping. In fact, vaping seems to temporarily suppress the urge to cough. The coughing urge shows up the next day or on days I don't partake. This is why I suspect the lung irritation from smoking or even vaping is what is producing the urge to cough.
