So which thickness is about = to the OSS?

oss Teflon Roll-16"x18 Yards 54 FT PTFE FILM.003x16"x54 3 MIL SHEET

a quick lesson in plastic sheeting... and our pompous us measurment system. sheeting is measured in the "mil" which is actually being measured in "thousandths" (.000) so 3 mil means .003 2 mil is .002 6mil is .006.

so,

the original slick pad is 1 mm thick... or aproximatly .04

Good shit @farscaper!! So the slick sheet myself nd others are using is 3mil correct? So what size do I want for a ptfe "pad"? Seems like up to 5mil is the thickest reasonably priced one.

im working on all that lol you caught me mid edit!. you want a 40mil or .04" thick ptfe sheet to get the pad thickness. also referred to as 3/32"

and you need 3mil or .003" thickness for the sheets thickness.

Yea I saw it posed quick. Ok I'm looking at one with measurements in title 12 in. W, 12 in. L, 0.004 in. T. Then in the technical specifications it's 12", 12", and 0.406" is this the one? Wtf with these measurements!!!!! :rant:

yea their site is confusing bro.

im checking this out atm.. they dont seem to go under .005 which is a little thicker than the oil slicks sheets but that could be good... but they have the .03 and .04 and sell by the foot.

and if anyone has been worried that the ptfe sheets that are thicker might not be flexible check this out. its on the top of the page I linked above.


Please note: ALL PTFE sheet 0.093" and under will be ROLLED for shipment to save on UPS charges. If you are familiar with PTFE, you understand it's not flat in these thicknesses. When you receive the material, simply re-roll in the opposite direction to restore some flatness to the sheet/film.

That's the site to go with they even cut to size and shapes... Can u say vaccum chamber liner at a cool 10" inch diameter oh yea, couple rectangles for the pyrex. This is a done deal!

yup thats pretty much where im at! are you gonna order soon? it will be as soon as I can. so exciting!

it comes in rolls up to .02 then they carry the pads/ slabs .03 up to a ridiculous thickness for our purposes.

So what would u say for the pads .03 or u think thicker? I don't have much experience using pads because I started out doin bho so I just got use to not using them.

I was gonna get a .03 and a .04 for testing. its a 1/4 mm diffrence so I have no idea what the differences in function would be with such small ammounts... I might get a .06 just to see how flexible that is becuase that would be thicker than oil slick pads! so better heat retention and better buffering...

the 12x12" slabs would be under 20 bucks without custom cuts and shipping which I haven't looked into. but if you want one I would do the .03 for a best middle ground... I kinda wanna try the rolls of .02....

edit @NickDlow I noticed they only have charges specifically for "strait line cuts" and they charge per cut... so will they do a round cut?

what site are you guys seeing the custom cut stuff at? i would think that cutting a circle out of a 12"x12" wouldnt be very difficult. just place a plate on top of it, face down, and cut away.

this had the easiest to understand dimentions. the price is on par too. I think we would be able to custom cut our own at these thicknesses... shipping looked to be $10 for me but your price may vary.

they do give bulk discounts...

because I am unsure what to suggest for thickness I have reached out to this manufacturer to see if I could get some single samples to test from the .005" up to .060".... we will see what they say. I dont expect them to... but I think there is enough interest to warrent the question. I mentioned my "associates" would be interested in my results!

Hey guys, just wanted to throw another idea out there before you stock up on PTFE film. You can buy PTFE evaporating dishes that are a low wall dish made of pure PTFE just like these films. These dishes are specifically designed for evaporation of chemicals and should be perfect for smaller batches. Yes, they are a bit pricy but, should last forever and don't require fitment in another dish. Just pour your solvent right in and turn the fan/heat on. I dont know how collection would go but, I dont see it being a problem. Just freeze if it sticks a little. Here is a link but, you can get them from many places.

Yeah, it seams to me that these would work a lot better then PTFE film in every area but, possibly dried material removal and a little shot in the freezer should take care of that. The problem with PTFE film is it is a pain in the ass to line a dish with it and wears out from creasing. These dishes should last forever if care is taken and can be used safely for evaporating Butane/ISO/Ethanol exc. Now, if we could just find a 12inch or larger pie plate version it would work for higher volume users. The only downside is the price but pure PTFE is expensive and you have to pay to play so to speak. I think the added expense is easily worth it as they should last forever and make our lives a lot easier.

Virgin is food grade fda approved, but not mechanical.

But they offer tolerance options as well :hmm: Thats where im at now in the ordering process of a ptfe pad. Figuring out what tolerance would fit best our goals

do they have any with a .030" or .040" thickness? ive also been waiting to hear from you on the grainger site cause it was a little typofilled and you had been in contact with them.


as for the dish, it doesnt say if it is flexible in any way. and if it is not others than being more non stick its not much of an improvement over glass... if it would flex some... then it would be of interest cause you could unstick without tools. I wish people were more thorough with descriptions.

I used Oil Slick roll. (wasted it, better job next time) I got thin almost inperceptible film that is only viable to make shatter by finding a spot and "building" upon it. (fold, crease and yank, rinse and repeat.) How would pad work?

It is made of solid PTFE so it should still be a huge improvement over glass(even if it is not flexible)as it is way, WAY more slick(there are very few materials that will permanently adhere to PTFE). I would hypothesis that putting the dish in the freezer for a couple of minutes and using a non-metalic tool would be all it would take to break even the most stubborn extractions free. Plus, it is shatter proof, resistant to temp swings, safe for almost all solvents(unlike silicone which is not safe for anything but ISO), and can handle -474F to +500F temperatures. If it works, it will be a buy once and forget about it purchase too unlike PTFE film which has a very short service life and is not cheap(its also very bad for the environment, very very bad).
