Trying!

All dressed up and no where to go! I hate that.

fc! my supplies have depleted, lotus survives through it all beautifully, even the lighter although slight leaking was had. only thing even approaching a problem with lotus is that stuff gets stuck on the standard grill and then air doesn't move well, requires alcohol clean up.

this is so convenient, cheap and fun way to vaporize, people really should not combust anymore. it is just not reasonable. :myday:

Indeed, the screens gunk up fast on the Lotus, I ordered several extra packs of screens, and simply toss them in a vial of ISO to soak for days and install a fresh one in. I usually evaporate the ISO and reclaim after soaking 5-10 screens.

Finally got an aluminum stem like everyone has been talking about, holy shit it's beefier than I thought! You could bludgeon someone real good with this thing in an emergency!

So screw these lighters! Even the angled ones sputter and go out at the most critical time,
I was thinking I had a bad plate or something but I just needed moar power :science:

So now I'm back to the chef's torch, with very consistent results.

If I need more portable flame, I have found this to be second best:

Just picked up a lighter slightly smaller then this one and couldn't believe how well it worked. I did have one cheap honest one that did work really well but after about 5 months it finally crapped out on me and none of the other 5 I have work near as well.

I think I'm going to take my plate off and look for cracks as it's charring a bit easy. Either that or its my lead hands.

I'm sure half the problem with the lighters is reflected heat and they get very hot and expand and contract a lot also.

I'm no physicist or expert in thermodynamics, but I would guess that when the flame is too high or too close or exactly perpendicular to the plate all the O2 gets used up leaving nothing for the combustion (of the butane). Giving the flame a little more angle often helps.

I think something else is going on with back-pressure because some of my torches work perfectly - like I can literally touch the head of the torch to the plate and it's still going. Yet other ones snuff out way too easily when they get close at all to the plate.

I received my second Lotus. Two homes, so I end up with two of everything. The upgraded sleek lighter I ordered last time wasn't listed. The basic Honest lighter that came with the new kit works much better than the sleek. I must have gotten a good one. Straight up and down and never fails. I have bigger torches as well. I don't know if it's the quality of the butane that was in them or not, but they seemed to discolor my plate more than the Honest lighter. The standard's butane tank seems larger as well. This afternoon I took ABV from my Firefly and put it in the Lotus. I couldn't believe how much more I was able to get. As an aside, I've been at this since the late '60s. I'm amazed I'm talking about it in a forum.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to be completely wrong. I am just guessing. Tho, my guess could still be right(ish) if some torches pull in more oxygen from around the nozzle...

That's part of what's cool about this forum for me. There are a lot of older smokers here who have been enjoying Mom Nature for a longer time. Everything used to be underground and knowledge was more isolated. It's astounding to me how much I have learned about all this since first coming here...

Link to where you got these? That pen torch looks dope.

Well I took it apart and held the plate up to the light and no visible cracks/light coming through it does have some creases/maybe scratches on the front. Even held a LED mini torch at point blank behind it and no light came through.

I'm guessing its either me or I do tend to fill the bowl up to the top/close to the top. Maybe too much?

The wood appears a bit scorched on the one side?

I was dreading putting the screws back in but it was a doddle thankfully.

Well it's clear you are favoring one side of the cap more than the other. But is the trim ring in that second picture still tightly installed the full way around?

If so then your technique is probably to blame. Looks like maybe you need to keep the flame moving a bit more - sometimes I find a tight figure 8 pattern works better to prevent the torch from staying in 1 spot too long

Yes the internal rings are snug and don't swivel/move.

It must be my angle as I always have the cap in exactly the same position.

Could be how far your filling your bowl. At first I would fill the bowl to the top or close to it and would have issues with the bowl charring and sometimes combusting. Found that keeping the bowl half full or less I almost never have any issues (as long as I don't go crazy with the heat).

The bowl is stainless steel which is not a good conductor of heat. I have never once found the WPA bowl too hot to handle, no matter how many sessions I've done.

Really? I wonder why that is, because mine gets really hot after 2 or 3 bowls.

Just got my lotus in, and promptly stuck it on the D020. That's good stuff. how long do you guys find it takes the bowl to cool down enough to empty it out?

Well, it takes a while for mine.

But, I also had to get a glass adapter so that the Lotus will fit on my bubbler. It's a 14f to 14m, basically an "extension" and it really helps to handle the hot WPA.

Did you not get a WPA handle? I bought the glass adapter before handles were available.
