Best way to store shatter

elmomuzz

That just happened...
I was visiting Breckenridge Co last week and managed to bring a few grams of shatter back home with me on the airplane. I would like to make it last a while so am wondering on how best to store it. Each gram came packaged in parchment paper inserted into a small envelope. I am thinking I can use my vacuum sealer and put them in a small jar and then the freezer?

It is already being stored just fine. Parchment is ideal and then keep excess air away from it, in an envelope in a ziploc in a dark/cool place is great. Freezing is unnecessary and could potentially introduce moisture via condensation. Silicone containers are great for short term storage, but have much greater air volume. Your oil will lose its terpenes and then the silicone flavor will intrude.

If you're seriously going to keep it listen to him, somehow nothing ever makes it long enough around here to pick up any silicon flavor, but it can.

Got tired of the non-stick containers. They work, but no style. Only took one bad experience with parchment to turn me off from that.

I went back to using glass concentrate dishes. Having the oil sticking to the glass prevents shatter pieces from flying onto the carpet, and every last bit can be scraped out. Oldschool, baby!

But really, nothing beats the lungs for storage.

Lungs are a good hanging out spot, but for long term storage, might I interest you in long term THC living arrangements in the fat cells?

I went ahead and put the envelopes into a mason jar and applied vacuum. Then I put it into the fridge. I don't plan on having it around forever but at least a few weeks.

Yeah just keep it out of light heat and away from air, you'll be fine. How long do you expect to "store " it for. A few grams would only last a few weeks for me. But that said shatter is a stable storable form of concentrate.

I love the usb fridge idea @vapordab <3 I have one just ordered now

I will be doing a big batch in a couple wekks hoping to have enough for 2-3 months. So this tread is actual for me. I think I will upgrade @SamuraiSam idea and storing my shatter wrapped in parchment paper in a medium jyarz. And then in the comming usb shatter dedicated fridge.

But im not sure for daily use. Actually, I see problems everywhere :uhh: My only experience was on parchment paper in a medium jyarz for about 3 weeks. It kinda dried a bit over time, so im looking for improvement.

@syrupy Would you put your shatter directly in the glass insert of a chico jyarz? I thought it was a problem to scrape it off the glass insert. I thought to line the chico with parchment paper or ptfe slicksheet. But will the lining stay inert with all the daily usage!?

Anw, I dont want to try the silicon container after reading they can impart the taste. So the lined chico will probably be the way. Any input welcome :)

Yes I would. Since the insert is glass, it should be scrapable. But I haven't use one, and the disclaimer about not working with all concentrates turns me off. I prefer the standard concentrate dishes because they're thick, and that last bit is easy to scrape off the edges. Concave bottoms like the Chico look nice, but with sticky stuff, I want a dish with hard edges to lever a dabber in there. 2 for $10 where I get them.

Its ok not to put a cap on for say a few days worth of shatter? Lets say I take 1 gram of shatter from my main stash and put it in there. I just put coaster on top to prevent dust and all to enter and I should be fine?

Im kind of ocd about storing my herbs and I want to cover all about storing and using diy concentrates. Thanks for the input

Wrapping your shatter in parchment paper or some of these sick silicone mats I just saw at Marijuana Packaging (Skillet Tools Silicone Mat and Parchment Paper) do the trick for me.

The thing that I usually have a hard time with is the stickiness from the marijuana concentrate sticking to the paper or surface that you leave it on. You don't have that problem with silicone.

In my experience with Oil Slick products, which I really like, whether you experience any terpene - flavor loss - depends on a multitude of factors including ambient temperature, the extract being stored- its consistency - and most of all time. I've had a few grams of shatter that lasted three weeks in summer an oil slick stacker and didn't notice any flavor change, although it can creep out on ya... I've had wax that started going downhill after less than two weeks.

I have previously stored shatter between two Oil Slick Duo pads and put them in a quart ziploc. This is less than ideal as the oil will slide out between the gaps in the pads and get messy.

I now fold parchment paper into envelopes unless it's super goopy and sticky. Generally fold the paper in half lengthwise up, then fold the sides up (only need an inch or inch and a half) and fold the the top seam underneath- that'll keep it together better....

If you have squat, wide mouth jars, you might be able to put small envelopes for a few grams into one. I sometimes have larger slabs and store them in parchment envelopes in gallon Ziploc bags.

I would love some advice on a better quality alternative to the gallon ziploc bag.

I really like the 420 Science Large Concentrate Jar + Dab Dish combo for wax, crumble, etc. It works great for sticky goop, oil, budder on a table, too,- but not as good as an Oil Slick ball for portability, as the lid is not silicone. I have two of the jars and the 4 pack of dishes and really like them on the coffee table or vape station....
