Most Annoying Web Abbreviation (or Meme)... LOL or IMHO or ...?

Last night I was reading a text, and it struck me how annoying lol has become. Whenever it started, it was cool because it was a shorthand way of letting someone know something is funny. Which is really hard to do in a text or email.

But lol has gotten stale. I see lolol at times. It seems twice as bad as lol.

The other one is IMHO. I use this sometimes when I don't catch it. The problem here is two things:

One, the H is some kid of sarcasm? It's like shoving an opinion down someone's throat, and then backing up saying, well it's just humble of me. Really? I thought humility was NOT having a fixed opinion, but being open.

Two, there's really no need for IMHO at all. Almost everything we write IS our opinion. So it's kind of redundant. If someone is posting something factual, we expect a reference so we know it's NOT their opinion (maybe an expert's opinion?).

So between the two... IHMO is all jacked up. But LOL wins the bout for me with it's AOL-style, Will-Not-Die, Even-My-Moms-Knows-It infamy.

Memes... can't choose just one. ;)

Salutations,

If one thinks "LOL" is overused imagine when in a different language! LOL in french doesn't mean squat, actually, yet young french-speaking persons seem not to know what's the acronym for exactly. That doesn't stop them from finding a sense of their own i guess.

As for interpreting this in order to associate people and characters i'll just pass. As a matter of fact in the good old days we had "taglines" to deal with the social element. Sometimes i miss the respectful familial environment, though i realize cannabis would be a banned topic of course.

The instantaneous nature of on-line forums has its disadvantages too but that's another story entirely.

:peace:

I don't really hate "LOL" but I almost never use it, except to write "I LOL'd for real" every now and then when something truly does make me laugh.

I find IMHO annoying because IMO is really *more* than enough to qualify that it's just my opinion...IMO. :D

Probably the three that are the most annoying to me are OMG, WTF & AFAIK, but I find most all of the "txt abrvtns" that come out of cell phone texting annoying and just lazy when used on the internet. (SRSLY)

The internet requires a keyboard, not typing with thumbs on a damn phone...IMO (couldn't resist)

The one that gets me is when someone says lol in person...
Just laugh dammit! Saying lol in person basically conveys the exact opposite of what its meant to - I don't find that amusing enough to actually laugh

I always thought the H stood for honest, not humble?
Either way, its just abbreviating a common turn of phrase... And Ive never read that much into it myself...
I've never heard of humility having anything to do with openness... It's more a way of acknowledging that your opinion isn't necessarily the most correct 100% fact checked one, just your held belief...
Kinda like throwing a "for what its worth" after something...

Also, I find myself slinging ash it tonne more IMOs around here than anywhere else - its essentially part of the rules
