What kind of heating element can I use with a quartz dome less nail?

Pukinbeagle blows quartz nails with 16mm and 20mm cups, with the correct ledge for standard 4mmX25mm hot runner coils to sit on.
$_57.JPG

They run $150 to $260 on the d-nail website depending on cup size and joint, with a 4 week lead time. Cheaper on ebay when available.

I need a nail I can afford to break. I'm hoping there is a way to adapt standard tall or flat coils for mass manufactured domeless nails, the kinds sold on ebay. I have a club banger (thanks fc!) with a joint, I'm pretty sure nothing will work for that. I was hoping to find a cheap castle that will slide through a flat spiral coil - which is no longer the popular enail coil type. The common (ie sold on ebay) flat spirals are 26mm OD, 9mm ID. I worry that a jointless DI nail won't actually fit through that coil, even 10mm nails.

The DIY nail is very affordable using high quality off-the-shelf components. Custom anything, whether glass or heater coil, takes it out of the $200 league. This would be easy peasy if I would use a titanium nail instead, but I want quartz.

Is there something missing here if I want quartz? My choice is the EDIT: fuck it writing this post makes me want to just pay PukinBeagle for their effort, or buy the $65 ebay knockoffs.

@farscaper I'm guessing those are the ones sold on ebay for $65. Its a reasonable price but it is still not ideal - the heating ring around the cup. That works great on Titanium for the same reason you can heat its shaft - the heat conducts throughout the metalwork. But with a quartz nail, you end up with hotter cup walls and a cooler cup floor, which is the reason you folk don't use your daisy nails much. It stands to reason that the ideal setup involves heating the cup floor (with a flat heater under the cup). Please do not be polite to me, please point anything I say that you disagree with.

only disagreement replies requested? did I read that right?

Don't know if you are picking a right or running for cover after stating your opinion

I fully agree with your points. The closer the heater is to the oil, the better the temperature control will be. On the center intake tube quartz dish designs, the oil melts and pools at the bottom of the dish. The heaters are round the cup so only the dish walls have direct heater, not the bottom. That said, quartz transfers heat quickly, much better that TI. It also cools quickly because of this (along with the lower mass). No doubt the best solution is to heat the bottom directly with the coil. Hard to do with this quartz design though.

This of course is much easier to do using TI. the dish simply threads onto the center tube as a nut. The large flat coil mates up to a large dish and screws on the center tube. If you use a real large dish the whole bottom is heated evenly. It can have short sides on the dish too.

By now you are thinking, why the heck are you telling us the same old story...
Well, just wanted to explain it again to be on the same page

Now where we might disagree is the temperature graduation from the dish walls to the dish bottom is OK for TI since its so low, while its not for quartz. So the point is the thermal resistance of quartz is much higher that the thermal resistance of TI? This would be the only reason it could be ok it TI, but to much for quartz.

This I question. I think the opposite - thermal resistance of quartz is lower than the thermal resistance of TI. need to Google this myself...

The issue with quartz its structural strength. You simply can't do it like the TI nail, but you can make a nice large dish that mates to a flat coil nicely, maybe a quartz tube used as the center tube that is treaded through the middle of the heater. Now the hard part - supporting the coils weight and position. Several thoughts here, but nothing I like... Say a larger quartz tube (one that the dish's tube can fit into) with a large flat disk of quart on top. the quartz dish and coil are mounted on top. Not real happy with this though... OK I could be over medicated

So, if someone can figure the mechanics using a couple (or more) quartz components that allows a flat coil to heat the bottom directly, hold up said coil, and be structurally sound, they will have a real winner, but I still think a side heated quartz dish is as good as with TI

Edit: Well I checked the thermal conductivity of these materials before i dug too deep of a hole. i stand corrected or simply wrong... the thermal conductivity of TI is 22 while quartz is 3. This means the temperature gradient across quartz will be about 7 times larger than TI. UGHHH! Could be worse though. Most metals are 100 or more (copper is 400) so TI is pretty low for metal.

Btw, a PID means a PID type controller. Here its a temperature version. PID is the 3 parameter algorithm the controller uses to control the target - here a set temperature value. Look it up on Google as i would be just copying\pasting in here the meaning of each parameter

if I ever go enail id try the 710whip first just cause how can you beat that price!

btw the 710 whip can be used with any 2 piece nail. wich basically opens up titanium. I think last I saw the whip alone was on sale for 75.... usually about 100

150 for the whole kit looks like.

there is a big difference between a daisy loosing temp fast (which is mainly due to people not heating it correctly) and an enail with a barrel shaft. the quartz would cool quickly... but since its attached to a heater that cooling will be compensated by constant heating would it not?

I agree in full a bottom flat coil would be ideal... but that would require a 2 piece quartz nail that is to this day still non existing.

for a flat coil options are a ceramic or titanium.

sorry I didnt see you had tagged me for so long... apparently I wasnt paying attention!

edit: read back some more... ive seen people hanging coils off their banger... you might try that

Hey man, i have the same pid and am having some troubke getting the temp to get stable and not hella over/undershooting. Any help with your personal settings would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!

Just for fun, I built a dual e-nail setup using the standard design and the MYPIN TA4 PIDs and the new XLR connector. Got the programing done and its working nearly as good as my D-nail original unit.

Going to build a triple for my buddy's dab bar where we hang alot. Nice glass bar in a semicircle made out of glass. Figure setting up three stations with complete control would help avoid passing pieces around. Also, easy to compare nail step-ups or even different glass itself. Typically run a 20mm dish, 18mm female quartz nail on one rig and a Omni nail from Santa Crus Shredder using a 10mm coil and the standard D-nail base. Tried out the original rev 1.1 TI nail (10mm coil) and the new 20mm dish rev 1.2 TI. For TI nail use the Omni nail is the best so far. Just bought the top section from SCS and use the original D-nail base and coil. Also bought the new rev 1.2 top since I use a 20mm coil on the quartz. About $450 out of pocket with coils and 2 nails.

Also bought the cheaper coils from AliExpress.com. Comes pre-wired with the XLR male plug wired compatible to the production D-nail XLR female panel connector. Only $60 ea. Uses the same sleeve etc. only thing takes time to get and shipping is a bit high. $16, then $6 for each additional.

Did you get a confirmed price from the supplier yet?
I checked with the alibaba folks... minimum order is like 5 if you want to get it for less than 300 after shipping.

But wait..... I bought mine here. http://www.BestE-Nail.com. they also have regular and flat coil enails. Thats how i found them. My deale..um, friend, has a BestE-Nail Mach 1 which is their regular style e-nail. it has a 2 yr warranty, and he's used it a LOT for like 10 months now with no problem. But I've had my Mach 3 (that's what they call their branded version) for like 3 months now, and it has changed my life. This is the absolute best one around. And i've used dabjoy, dnail, and of course the BestE-Nail mach 1.

Sorry for such a long ramble, but i wish i could preach it to everyone. I love my Mach 3!!!

heres the link again. http://www.BestE-Nail.com

yep. knock off smart dabb, with plastic around the heater thats not even supposed to be touching high temp silicone on the original..... uhhhh, yea, you be the judge of safety on that Chinese vape.....

the majority of www.BestE-Nail.com is lazily copy pasted from smart dabb http://smartdabb.com/smart-dabb-digital.html (click read more) .

even copied the words for features non existent on the chinese copy like carbon fibre body of the heater. and even have the balls to take the line that gives them credit for the patent pending stainless steal air-path.

haha... I just checked that out. Makes sense that its a clone since its so cheap.... i will say this though. The heating "coil" is actually heat induction tech or whatever, and the high temp poly (or cheap plastic, whoever you believe) never gets more than slightly warm. I do about .75g of great bho daily, and this stays turned on all day. almost 4 months now, and no problems. Just perfect 710 degree rips. Plus 2 year warranty.

Of course i am not saying that you should willy nilly buy chinese knockoff products, but... i bet if you look at your computer or phone, or virtually any electronic around you right now, it says china somewhere on it. And im sure that every single american e-nail company uses at least some chinese sourced parts.

Anyways, if i had the bg bucks, I'd go smart dabb... but im always broke, and i love my BestE-Nail.

wow. never thought i'd sounf like such a fan-boy.

Happy Dabbing!
