Cycling and vaping go together, but I lose a measure of courage while doing jumps on my mountainbike. The only thing I don't like about it. Other than that, it's magic.

or perhaps gain a measure of sanity, in that i would be insane to do jumps on a mountain bike - but i am 66, so healing takes, really, a long, long time.

Smoking herb and surfing although not a great mix technically they have always been seen as a natural paring going back to the 1970's at a minimum.

Basically I stand up paddle board and SUP surf and vape one a week, certainly better on the lungs IMO for those long hold downs in bigger waves.

As a rule I don't smoke and surf these days, although you think your surfing great you usually aren't from personal experience.

Vaping while snowboarding was quite an experience when I was a snow bum for a season... it definitely DID make me a better rider because it relaxed me and put me more "into the zone".

Stand up paddling is something that has really peaked my interest... I'm a huge fan of Primal Blueprint author Mark Sisson, and he's huge into SUP and is pretty fucking ripped for being 60.

Yes I have read some of Marks thoughts and his "primal blueprint" for healthy eating, he's a pretty interesting guy IMHO, I have a lot of time for what he says.

BTW, I should have said "SUP surf, I only vape once a week" instead of "SUP surf and vape one a week"

I will though likely vape and ride my race board at some point, probably with a mate of mine, in the surf you need to be responsible on such a large board with crowds around as you normally get in good surf, hence why I wont be vaping and surfing.

In short, I didn't finish. :ugh:

But I'm proud of my effort. In 94-degree heat, I ran 17.5 miles and climbed 5,300 ft in total elevation gain. It was brutal, but I succumbed to heat exhaustion and collapsed at that point. In the middle of nowhere on the mountain knowing there was little to no chance of assistance. I vomited all the liquids I'd consumed over the previous 5 hours and my core shut down. Heck, my legs were fine. I knew at that point my race was over. I was devastated. But choosing to stop was the right move.

I'm OCD when it comes to preparing, so I took my phone out of my hydration pack and dialed 911 (thank goodness I had a bit of cell service). I knew I was in bad shape but not critical, so I had them contact the park ranger (my knight in shining armor) to find me on the trails. I know the mountain pretty well and told him where I was.

In 20 minutes I heard his truck coming. When he saw me he gasped a bit but I gave the thumbs up and got up in his truck for the "ride of shame" down the mountain.

Second time in a row I failed to finish, but it's a brutal marathon and to even compete is satisfying to me. Will try again!

To be fair, 17miles is incredible and sounds steep! Ive only ever done a half and remember thinking that was only halfway what a full is a don't think I could ever do it!!

How are you feeling now?

Thank you for the kind words and for asking. I feel great! I did an Olympic distance triathlon two weeks after the race and had one of my best bike splits ever. I'm taking a couple weeks off for rest and stretching and will get back at it shortly.

describing 17.5 miles, 5,300 ft in 94 degree weather is surely a solid effort by any broad definition. Sorry that didn't work out. Sounds like you made the right call though. Glad the only injury is a little wounded pride. Next year. Maybe?

Separately, I just missed by BQ time in Portland on Sunday. 3:35:45. 3:30 was my cutoff. Next year.

Yup. The submittals of the designs themselves along with the pick of the final design could be a contest in and of itself.

Helps to listen to a radio talk show host / discussion for some reason, the conversation takes my mind off the pain. I find myself thinking 'Keep talking, keep talking, keeepppp tallkkkkiinnnggggg!' cos I need something to focus on lol

Haha I do the same! Sometimes when I'm cycling into the gym vaped and I much prefer listening to a podcast instead of music. Love listening to the likes of Ben Greenfield fitness podcast or the Tim Ferries show, anything where you're listening to inspirational people that are getting shit done. Much easier to get through the grind!

That's pretty awesome man, I was debating creating a thread on biohacking in general, and will do so once I get some more time. Getting into taking control of my own health with biohacking has completely changed my health and life....i'm still working on some issues (like how to moderate flowers better!) but the results just from diet and lifestyle have been mind boggling for my wife and I.

Dave Asprey is one smart dude!
