Athlete Vaporists?

I've recently started daily long, brisk walks and running on alternate days. I try to vape before each one, runners high while high is pretty great. I recently found that zone where it felt like levitating, almost effortless, as my vision blurred into a tunnel (I was in the woods so not really a stretch) and I was padding so softly in some minimal shoes, I actually started laughing. I've never in my life been a good runner but now at age 40 and with barefoot/minimal shoes and finally learning good form, I am wishing I had been doing this decades ago.

I have to say. When I saw ''Athlete Vaporists'', I did not think it was going to be about physically working out lol.

I ran in the army for 10 years. You could hear my duck feet flopping from 5 blocks away. I would always lose myself running. Usually didn't even remember doing it after I was done.

I turned 50 in this past May. Two weeks ago, I finished Iron Man Canada.

Over the six month training program, MFLB was a constant companion (3-6 d/week). I did some of the bike workouts vaked. I did not see any elevated heart rates others have mentioned. Rather, the medication made it easier to go slower which tended toward a lower HR. Going slower is frequently exactly the right answer when you're talking about a 112 mile ride that comes right before you run a 26.2 mile marathon.

You're my hero. I'm a triathlete and trail runner. My first tri was in 1993. I've not yet done an Ironman distance but have a goal to complete one before I turn 50. I'm 44 now and about to run the Mt Diablo marathon again. 7,000 ft of elevation gain in ~95 degree weather. This is part of my prep for an Ironman distance tri in the next year or so.

Slow is the way to go, as you allude. I'm not only about finishing, I'm about finishing strong and recovering fast. I love the strategy involved with race nutrition and preparation, not to mention the race itself.

Cheers to you.

And cheers to all those keeping my humble little thread going strong for quite a while now. Great to be in such good athlete vaporist company.

What I do is vape, get into a state where I can feel and apprecaite my muscles and body and get into some deep breathing and stretching, balance exercises and basic yoga.. Then If I have the energy I'll do 20 pushups, have a break and do 20 more, some light ab exercises and then a nice rest and browse FC for hours

I know nothing about fitness, proper techniques, etc (other than what I teach myself) and I have terrible back, neck and shoulder pains but I do my best to keep the blood flowing and not get too weak/limp.)

Any other newbies to fitness just trying to stay afloat?:leaf:

It's refreshing to see others vaping before their fitness regimes and sharing their experiences and how it works for them without passing opinions as facts. This is one of my favourite threads on FC because it involves my 2 biggest passions - vaping and athletics! For my body chemistry they so go hand in hand!

I like it too, I don't come here often but it's nice knowing that this stays bumped. Exercise & vape =
Exercising while vaped makes me enjoy and appreciate exercising while sober even more as well! Its a win/win!

I bet on GrassCity there is a thread called 'Athletes who have multiple bong rips and blunts' and there are crickets chirping..

I'm still at it... my current routine is to vape modestly, then either walk for 2 hours or, on alternate days, walk about 20 mins, do my running program, and then walk home. I also generally listen to podcasts and ramp-up music while walking, then custom workout mixes (to match my running intervals), then more wind-down music or podcasts on the way home. This way, I get to combine:

1) vaping
2) exercising
3) music/lecture brainfood

As the winter sets in, I will be adding gym time to the mix, both weights and treadmill. I hate the concept of treadmills but to honestly stick with my programs rain or shine with no excuses I am willing to make a go of it. I'll also be swapping bicycling into the mix (which I have always loved) but wanted to build up my running chops (which I have always hated) while the weather is nice.

Call it a crutch if you will, I don't care. Vaping has turned this activity from something I avoided and dreaded to the very best part of my day. I get my personal meditation time, my exercise, my uninterrupted enjoyment of music, and I return home in a great mood to be at my best with my wife and kid.

The vaping does a few things:

1) Sets a bit of a ritual tone. It probably sounds silly, but I start to get amped up just from loading the whip. It's like the Rocky theme starts playing, but it is more like heavy riffs from Sabbath with some cool trippy reverb.

2) Instantly boosts my mood and silences the inner-jerk critic telling me I am too fat or tired or lame to go run. I'll take all the help I can get, so the vapors are much appreciated here.

3) Much magnifies the enjoyment of music or the podcasts/audiobooks I listen to. I think we all know about this.

4) Creates a more holistic awareness of the body. I'm trying to learn the nuances of barefoot and minimalist running. Being vaped, I can really focus and visualize on the body mechanics. How bouncy my foot is, is my posture straight, how does the breathing feel. Its like a realtime Alex Grey painting. The other day, I found a form that felt like I was sitting on a skilift or bench, with my feet treading the ground under me. Fucking amazing. Other times, it is like I am surfing through a tunnel in the jungle, birds cheering me on and leapfrogging over logs and rocks. Beats workin.

I am not sure if any "non athletes" will read this thread... I do not identify as an athlete, I was the fat kid in school, I hate competition... but partly through the magic of vaping, I've learned to swallow my self-consciousness and do what it takes to better myself. If I can do it, I feel most anyone can.

Hey everyone :)
I am an avid cyclist ,hiker, runner, and enjoy the art of parkour. In about 3 and a half weeks I will be participating in a 100kilometer cycling race for fundraising. Currently I'm planning on going for first place. I'm almost to the point of biking those 100 kilometers 4 days a week.
I'm interested to know what other cyclists here are riding, feel free to share
Maybe post a picture ?
I'll put my bike up tomorrow when I have some time

Thanks for the kind remarks. If you're even talking about 7000 feet of gain over 26.2 miles at 95 degrees you'll do just fine in the 140.6 event. The most represented age group in Whistler BC was 40-44. Not quite the young man's game one might assume. Rather the course rewards patience and determination -- which most of us pick up as we get older.

About the upper back pain ... the obvious place to start with with a PT guy/gal. As my MD said when my knee went out, they know more about body kinematics then we ever will. Thing is, they focus not on fixing you but on showing you how to strengthen you body so you fix yourself. Some one described us a 'fearfully and wonderfully made' ... and so it actually works! Good luck!

Looking into getting into cycling but didn't get to spend too my time on my now gone peugeot. I got it at a tag sale for $80. Looking into getting into cycling again but can't seem to find anything under $500.

I'm looking to spend as little as possible and just ride. Any suggestions as to what to look for in bike?

Depends on the 'type' of bike. I find that Mountain Bikes are cheaper than racing bikes, and serve the same purpose :p
Wheels are more reliable on a mountain bike atleast, and the frame / tires are still large and comfortable to use! SHould be plenty in the $300+ pricerange

Not sure i'd consider myself a cyclist as much as a Mountain Biker, but I purchased a Specialized Stumpjumper HT 29'er and absolutely love it. With the 29" tires, and inflated well, it actually even moves on the road at a decent clip, although I prefer to stay off road as much as possible. The bike only weighs 25lbs which for a MTB is pretty decent.

Nothing like vaping before and zoning out in the trails! Ever since I moved away from west coast (Vancouver, BC) I just cannot bring myself to snowboard, so the MTB takes its place! LOVE IT!

Unless you know someone in the bicycle industry it'll be hard to find a good bike under 500. I'm sure it's possible just a little difficult. I got my cannondale for 550 and it retails for 1500-2000. If you want to pm me I might be able to find you something.

I understand where your coming from but I totally disagree with that statement. Mountain bikes do not serve the same purpose as a road bike. Road bikes are generally lighter and faster. As for the wheels being more reliable I find that to not be entirely true either. There are so many more ways to puncture a tire mountain biking (stumps, sharp sticks etc) that you don't usually find on the road(and if you do i find it's easier to avoid them ). I'd like to see you go 50+ mph on a mountain bike ;)

Another option for biking on a budget is to see if your area has a "bike kitchen" or "recyclery" non-profit. Many mass-produced inexpensive road frames in the 1980s were of relatively high quality compared to the cheap frames of today. Put a mix of new (tires, saddle, chain, brake pads) and used (transmission, brakes) parts on an old Japanese frame and you can have a totally serviceable, perhaps even nice, road bike for $3-500.

Another thing to check out is Bikesdirect.com. They use Chinese frames but with high quality components (the most important part of the bike). I purchased both mine and my girlfriends bike off of there. My girlfriend was able to get a bike similar to a $1200 Trek bike for about $600.

If you are in the United States, Trek bikes are worth looking into. their base model the 7.0 is about $500 and is a good enough bike to be used for both recreation and fitness. My roommate has the 7.0 and is able to keep up with me on a bike that costs almost double. Trek stores are usually pretty good about helping to keep your bike in good condition, assuming you purchased your bike from them

Loving all this activity in the thread. It's inspiring to me as I prepare for a grueling mountain marathon.

I'm fortunate to feel very strong and have no issues as I approach one week before the race (fingers crossed, knock on wood, etc...). Did a nice open-water swim tonight and will run a hilly 7 miles tomorrow on the road, followed by 8-mile trail runs on Sat and Sun to keep me loose and ensure my equipment is meeting standards.

I'll take all the positive vibes I can get. Cheers, all!

So far this week manages a 3 mile run and two 7 miles cycles. Got to gym later this week and main focus on cardio.

It is amazing how much more exercise you can do vaping instead of smoking.

Anyone else sweat more than usual when they vape and exercise?

I really enjoy vaping and cycling now, nothing too hectic though where I'd be going anywhere over 80%. I must try it out at the gym sometime. I tend to pretty all out at the gym so I suspect it mightn't suit the days where I wanna push extra hard. But the extra bodily-awareness is definitely useful for targeting specific muscle groups. Visualization plays such a key role in activating those hard to reach muscles!

!

Yes, I think I sweat more during hard exercise when vaped. And sometimes my heart beat goes up higher than normal for the "load"---which I think is possibly because I'm so excited about doing it...

Cannabis is known to raise your heat rate by around 20% but not for very long.

Made it to the gym and managed 30 mins solid cardio (10 running, 5 sprint interval and 15 mins crosser).

I then went for a swim and had a sauna and jumped back in the pool, was so good.

I once went to a circuits class after a vaping and was so intense, was like I was getting higher as it went on and the music sounded so good!
